CHAPTER 4: PORTABLE CONDITION MONITORING SOLUTIONS — COMPLEMENTARY WAY FORWARD
Portable, handheld data collectors and analyzers are directly aimed at route-based,
walk-around condition monitoring programs. Bently Nevada portable data solutions
provide collection, analytics, and connectivity to System 1.
While prior chapters have already mentioned the comparative differences between wired,
wireless, and portables value and demand remains strong accounting for nearly 25% of CM
technologies leveraged.

Many assets do not need the continuous data from wired solutions or the more frequent
data from wireless, yet are still an important trend for predictive maintenance. As such,
a single portable CM solution can be leveraged across many assets with several different
routes, making the portable complementary to the wired and wireless solutions. The
affordability makes portables an attractive option.

Chapter 4 focuses on how portable products offer a value-added, complementary approach to CM strategies by adding
the human element during plant walk-around programs. It also covers how new portable devices have simplified data
collection and improved analysis, thus optimizing existing CM programs with better diagnostics. And, most importantly,
the cost savings and ROI coming from these leading portable products are discussed, along with case studies describing
business benefits.
4.1 Portable CM Action Framework
Portable vibration CM equipment is an entry-point solution for CM that is carried around the facility or plant by
maintenance personnel to make recordings. It is comprised mainly of a data collector, which includes a transducer sensor
and cable for data capture, a central processing unit for data storage and transmission, and associated software. Advanced
portables deliver real-time analysis locally, machine diagnostics and actionable recommendations to multipurpose handhelds.
Advanced portable CM enables providing an effective contribution to a condition monitoring program.
Portable “typically” enable a lower investment path over wired or wireless. High-end portable vibration CM analyzers are
usually multi-channel systems capable of fast data collection, storage, and analysis through enhanced software functionality
and built-in advanced communication for fast and easy network integration. In a best-case scenario, portable CM solutions
provide a complementary approach and value-added component to support an effective maintenance program that has
wired and wireless solutions. Portability adds the invaluable element of human involvement to capture changing asset
conditions as required. For instance, technicians using a portable data collector can offer visual and audible insights while
their sense of smell provides a complementary approach to data collection during a walk-around program and sporadic
changing conditions on the plant floor. We are still far from the smart sensor becoming the self-aware sensor; technology is
mankind’s partner, not a full replacement.
The process is simple. All types of data analysis captured by portable manual data collection (including spectral and
waveform, horizontal, vertical and axial for each bearing, and machine speed) are uploaded into supporting software like
Bently Nevada’s System1 via portables devices such as BN’s SCOUT200 series.
EXAMPLES OF SUCCESSFUL IMPLEMENTATION
4.2 Business Value-Led Examples
Portable Condition Monitoring — SCOUT200 Series
Bently Nevada’s next-generation SCOUT200 portables offer a paradigm shift to to data collection.
The SCOUT200 series includes 2- and 4-channel full units. These robust, lightweight (only 650 g), hip-mounted portable
wireless vibration data collectors are easy to carry on-site and connect wirelessly to multipurpose handhelds using
Bluetooth and communicate with System 1 either wirelessly, through a cellular network, or via a file mode transfer option
for added security. This differentiator allows the solution to be complemented by other applications, including camera,
email, and phone.

The straightforward design of the SCOUT200 series allows users to spend less time collecting data on-site and more
time in the remote analysis process. The intuitive design is easy to use with little training required. Ultimately, Bently
Nevada’s new lightweight wireless portable data collector has simplified the data collection process, optimizing existing
CM programs with improved diagnostics.
The benefits of this new series of data collectors range from improved safety to longer duration between charges. The
SCOUT200 series is an intrinsically safe solution with options to work in hazardous conditions, including exposure to
water, ignitable gases, and explosive areas (with no need for hot work permits due to equipment ratings). Moreover, all
product function upgrades can potentially be conducted on-site, without the time-consuming need to move to particular
service locations. Last, these data collectors can be used for 10 hours between charges. Similar to Ranger Pro, SCOUT200
has total connectivity with System 1 CM software. Data can be sent anywhere securely and is uploaded to System 1 for
historical trending or further analysis. System 1 connects portables, wired, and wireless as a single HMI tool.
The following case studies highlight the benefits of SCOUT200 series products.
Case Study 1: Bently Nevada’s SCOUT200 was able to identify air compressor damage that had not been formerly
noticed through vibration data collection in a major oil and gas company

Case Study 2: Bently Nevada’s System Evolution condition monitoring software and SCOUT220 portable data
collector decreased significantly vibration measurement levels from more than 8mm/s rms to less than 1 mm/s rms
Case Study 3: Bently Nevada’s new SCOUT220 and S1 Evolutions software decreased exponentially new vibration
measurement levels to less than 50% of the preceding amplitudes

4.3 The Imperative of CM Portable Solutions
Handheld portable vibration CM equipment is expected to grow at a steady but nominal pace through the introduction of
new products. Advanced sensors, connectivity, and software technology underpin digital inspection to enable monitoring
that ensures asset integrity in remote, hazardous locations and translates into huge cost savings for plant operators—all
while preventing equipment downtime and catastrophic failures.
The new, easy-to-use SCOUT200 portable CM portfolio offers are attractive for users looking to remove the
complexity of data collection, spend less time collecting data, and gain time for the analysis process in any location.
These benefits clearly enhance the diagnostic reliability of vibration data collection that helps operators get the most
from existing production setups.
Moreover, a portable CM solution represents a valuable, complementary approach to establishing an effective maintenance
program because it adds the human element that captures visual, audible, and even odor-related insights that help identify
hidden performance patterns not recognized by some advanced solutions.
will set themselves up to experience significant results if they review the benefits of adopting a mix of CM technologies
that can help reduce engineering implementation complexity and operational costs considerably, while fitting any
maintenance strategy.
