  • Digital Video World:The A/V industry is going through a transition form analog signaling to digital signaling. A widearray of digital video ports, including DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and HD-SDI, are present in someform on virtually every new component found in the A/V industry. Although digital signaling isbecoming predominant in the A/V industry, there is a wide range of analog hardware equipmentin place today. For the foreseeable future most presentation A/V systems will require a mix ofanalog and digital video products.

Digital video has been in existence for over 20years. HD-SDI or SDI has been in the medical, visualization, and computer graphics segments for over 10years, DVI was established in 1999.The newer standards are HDMI and DisplayPort which both can carry digital video and audio. The signals:

DVI and DisplayPort are found on many PCs and laptops and are standard on many professionaldisplays and high-end projectors.HDMI is primarily found on HDTV capable products - BlueRay Disc players, game consoles, andsatellite/cable DVR and receivers. HDMI was introduced as a consumer product, but has workedits way into the commercial product mix.

Why Digital? Lower cost computers and displays - Less A/D conversion in equipments Digital signals are lossless, enabling the distribution of near pixel-perfect and consistent qualityimages while reducing the time and eort required for system and display set-up A digital infrastructure can be designed to accommodate the high resolutions found in the A/Vworld today. -1920x1200 and HDTV 1080p.

Challenges:Compared to analog signals, which is robust and can perform under distress form extended cablingdistances, inadequate system design and installation, digital signals have to maintain fullsignal integrity through the system. If these signals are compromised by distances, or design theimpact is more noticeable.Digital technologies such as DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort are primarily designed for short point-topointconnections. Distances in these applications are relatively short. But with extenders andNetwork cabling distances of up to 300ft can be achieved.Digital video signaling have very speci"c performance and timing parameters that need to bemaintained for overall system functionality. Terms such as equalization, jitter, and reclocking replaceterms of the analog world such as-leveling and peaking devices. In some digital video systems there is two way communication between source and display. Ifthis communication is interrupted, such as following a disconnection, source switch, or signalsplit, image display can be delayed, or even lost completely. This communication is called EDIDExtendedDisplay Identi"cation Data or DRM Digital Rights Management (associated with HDCP)High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection.

  • EDID

Extended Display Identi"cation Data (EDID):EDID is a standardized meaning for a display to communicate its capabilities to a source. The premise is for the display to communicate back to the source its operational characteristics, such as native resolution. The source then would generate the appropriate characteristics backto the display. This allows function between the two pieces of equipment without installer/userconfguration.

    HDCP - Content Protection

Digital Rights Management - Audio and Video SignalsFor digital video content protection HDCP in the most prevalent. HDCP is designed to preventunauthorized access of protected video content and to enforce restrictions on authorized playback.HDCP enables video sources, such a Blu-ray disc players, PCs, and other digital media devicesalways undergo a process to protect the video from unauthorized access. This process of HDCP authentication can serveral seconds or minutes to complete. This is a primaryreason for the preceived sluggishness during startup or switching.

  • Digital Video: HD-SDI

    HD-SDI

SDI or HD-SDI is a digital interface used for broadcast grade video. HD-SDI is standardizedin SMPTE 292M, this provides data rates up to 1.485Gbps.SDI is a set of video standards for serial transmission of AV signals. SDI standards are primarily utilizedon professional broadcast and video production equipment, with secondary use in liveevents, medical imaging, digital cinema, military training and simulation, as well as teleconferencecameras and recording devices.

    Cable Design

The cable designed to handle SDI/HD-SDI signals are of the best quality and have to meet testingguidelines.Cable Design: Conductor - Solid Bare Copper Dielectric - Foamed PE or Te#on

Concentricity of the conductor is extremely important in the design of an SDIcable.

The Formation and uniformity of the air bubbles can make a dierence inperformance.

Shield: 100% Aluminum Bi-Foil with a 90-95% Tinned Copper Braid. Having both foil and high % braid will give the cable optimum noise protection

Jacket - Dependent on the environment - Non-Plenum, Plenum, Aquaseal

  • Digital Video: HDMI

HDMI - High Definition Multimedia InterfaceHDMI is an uncompressed all digital AV interface. The digital AV signals are delivered over a sin-gle cable and connected with a small designed connector. The interface is between any AVsource, such as a set-top box, DVD, and AV receiver. HDMI is the de facto standard in HD video(Consumer market).

HDMI provides great AV quality over analog signals especially at higher resolutions. The interfaceprovides a easy use, two way communication between source and display, and it is HD contentready- HDCP.

    1.3 vs. 1.4 HDMI standards

HDMI 1.3 standards (a, b) Increases single link bandwidth to 10.2Gpbs Supports 10bit, 12bit and 16bit deep color Oers Mini HDMI connectors for portable applications

HDMI 1.4 standards Oers all that 1.3 oers Supports 3D Viewing Increases Sync pulses to help deliver a cleaner signal Adds Audio channel return - TV with Built in Tuner - upstream/downstream audio

Cat 1 vs. Cat 2 HDMI cables: Cat 1: is the standard cable - will provide quality video for 720p/1080i - 2.23Gbps

    .7425Gbps x 3 RGB Channels= 2.23Gbps Resolution Cat 2: High speed- Quality video 1080p Deep Color - 10.2Gbps

    340Gbps x 3 RGB Channels= 10.2Gbps Resolution - 1440p/16bit color

The bits: When you see 1080p 12bit color what is that really telling you? 1080p operating @ 8 bit color- give a possible 16.7million colors 1080p operating @ 12 bit color - give a possible 68.7 billion colors - HIGHER BANDWIDTH!

    Future Deep Color - 24bit, 30bit, 36bit and 48bit

To prevent future system failures a premium grade HDMI cable has to be used! A 22AWG or24AWG with low capacitance and low skew will handle these higher data rates for longer dis-tances. HDMI standards do not recommend distances of more than 10meters (33feet), but withgood solid cables, these distances can be increased signi#cantly.

Triple shielded for superior noise immunity Dual UL Ratings: UL13 (CL2) and UL758 (AWM20276)Permanent Installations: Long RunsWith more and more commercial boardroom/ classrooms wanting high bandwidth video, the limits on in-stalling HDMI cables are high. Our SHR cables have connectors which makes it dicult to pull, there is notan easy $eld installable HDMI connector, there is a possibility that low grade HDMI cables may be used ina permanent installation. The solution is to wire the installation with a minimum of CAT6 Shielded andupgrade to CAT6A Shielded when possible. By providing this type of cabling, the installer can chose HDMIExtenders (TX/RX). The installation would convert the HDMI signals to run longer distances over the Net-work cabling, then convert it back to HDMI.

These installation can be cable managed with a simple Category 5E cable, but because of bandwidth limi-tations of Category 5E, future upgrades to the resolution will not be supported on these cables.
