SAFETY INSTRUCTIONThis chapter contains important safety instructionsthat should be followed when operating andstoring the oscilloscope. Read the following beforeany operation to ensure your safety and to keepbest condition for the oscilloscope.

    Safety Symbols

These safety symbols may appear in this manual or on theoscilloscope.

WARNINGWarning: Identifies conditions or practices thatcould result in injury or loss of life.

CAUTIONCaution: Identifies conditions or practices thatcould result in damage to the oscilloscope or toother objects or property.

    Safety Guidelines

    GeneralGuideline

    CAUTION

    • Make sure the BNC input voltage does notexceed 300V peak.

    • Never connect a hazardous live voltage to theground side of the BNC connectors. It mightlead to fire and electric shock.

    • Do not place heavy objects on the oscilloscope.• Avoid severe impacts or rough handling that

may damage the oscilloscope.• Avoid discharges of static electricity on or near

the oscilloscope.• Use only mating connectors, not bare wires, for

the terminals.• Do not block the cooling fan opening.• Do not perform measurement at power source

and building installation site (Note below).• The oscilloscope should only be disassembled

by a qualified technician.(Measurement categories) EN 61010-1:2001 specifies themeasurement categories and their requirements as follows. TheDSO-4000 falls under category II.

    • Measurement category IV is for measurement performed at thesource of low-voltage installation.

    • Measurement category III is for measurement performed in thebuilding installation.

    • Measurement category II is for measurement performed on thecircuits directly connected to the low voltage installation.

    • Measurement category I is for measurements performed oncircuits not directly connected to Mains.

    Power Supply

    WARNING

    • AC Input voltage: 100 ~ 240V AC, 47 ~ 63Hz• The power supply voltage should not fluctuate

more than 10%.• Connect the protective grounding conductor of

the AC power cord to an earth ground.

    Fuse

    WARNING

    • Fuse type: T1A/250V• To ensure fire protection, replace the fuse only

with the specified type and rating.• Disconnect the power cord before replacing the

fuse.• Make sure the cause of fuse blowout is fixed

    before replacing the fuse.

    Cleaning theoscilloscope

    • Disconnect the power cord before cleaning theoscilloscope.

    • Use a soft cloth dampened in a solution of milddetergent and water. Do not spray any liquidinto the oscilloscope.

    • Do not use chemical containing harsh productssuch as benzene, toluene, xylene, and acetone.

    OperationEnvironment

    • Location: Indoor, no direct sunlight, dust free, almost non-conductive pollution (Note below)

    • Relative Humidity: < 80%• Altitude: < 2000m• Temperature: 0°C to 50°C(Pollution Degree) EN 61010-1:2001 specifies the pollution degreesand their requirements as follows. the oscilloscope falls underdegree 2.

Pollution refers to “addition of foreign matter, solid, liquid, orgaseous (ionized gases), that may produce a reduction of dielectricstrength or surface resistivity”.

    • Pollution degree 1: No pollution or only dry, non-conductivepollution occurs. The pollution has no influence.

    • Pollution degree 2: Normally only non-conductive pollutionoccurs. Occasionally, however, a temporary conductivity causedby condensation must be expected.

    • Pollution degree 3: Conductive pollution occurs, or dry, non-conductive pollution occurs which becomes conductive due tocondensation which is expected. In such conditions, equipmentis normally protected against exposure to direct sunlight, precipitation, and full wind pressure, but neither temperaturenor humidity is controlled.

Power cord for the United Kingdom

When using the oscilloscope in the United Kingdom, make sure thepower cord meets the following safety instructions.

NOTE: This lead/appliance must only be wired by competent persons

WARNING: THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHEDIMPORTANT: The wires in this lead are coloured in accordance with thefollowing code:Green/ Yellow: EarthBlue: NeutralBrown: Live (Phase)As the colours of the wires in main leads may not correspond with thecolours marking identified in your plug/appliance, proceed as follows:The wire which is coloured Green & Yellow must be connected to the Earthterminal marked with the letter E or by the earth symbol or coloured Greenor Green & Yellow. The wire which is coloured Blue must be connected to the terminal which ismarked with the letter N or coloured Blue or Black. The wire which is coloured Brown must be connected to the terminal markedwith the letter L or P or coloured Brown or Red.If in doubt, consult the instructions provided with the equipment or contactthe supplier. This cable/appliance should be protected by a suitably rated and approvedHBC mains fuse: refer to the rating information on the equipment and/oruser instructions for details. As a guide, cable of 0.75mm2 should beprotected by a 3A or 5A fuse. Larger conductors would normally require 13Atypes, depending on the connection method used.Any moulded mains connector that requires removal /replacement must bedestroyed by removal of any fuse & fuse carrier and disposed of immediately,as a plug with bared wires is hazardous if a engaged in live socket. Any re-wiring must be carried out in accordance with the information detailed onthis label.

Real time vs Equivalent time sampling mode

Backgrounds The oscilloscope automatically switches betweentwo sampling modes, Real-time and Equivalent-time, according to the number of active channelsand sampling rate.

    Real-timesampling

One sampled data is used to reconstruct a singlewaveform. Short-time events might get lost if thesampling rate gets too high. This mode is usedwhen the sampling rate is relatively low(250MSa/s or lower).

    Equivalent-timesampling

Multiple numbers of sampled data areaccumulated to reconstruct a single waveform.Restores greater waveform details but takes longerto update the waveform. This mode is used whenthe sampling rate becomes higher than 250MSa/s.The maximum equivalent-time sampling rate is25GSa/s.
