Continued from 1BWhen she lived in Colo-

rado, Lindsey Berglund en-joyed snowboarding, moun-tain biking and hiking. Upon moving to Kearney, she found roller derby a welcome pur-suit “and probably more chal-lenging than any of the other activities that I used to par-ticipate in.”

Trumbull calls her time with the Roller Vixens her “own personal time.” She has a child and a full-time job and goes to school full-time. So roller derby is a nice outlet for her.

Adrian calls the team a “tribe of very strong women.” The “strong family of females takes care of one another, looks out for one another (and) helps each other grow on and off the track,” said Adrian, whose derby name is Venus the Victorious.

“Getting to play a full-con-tact sport as an adult woman is also fun because there’s not really a lot of avenues for you to participate in that kind of stuff at our age,” said Steph Gallaway, 29.

Members of the Roller Vixens live in Grand Island, Kearney and Hastings. The team, founded in 2011, plays its Grand Island home games at the Fonner Park Swine Arena. Remaining home games, or bouts, are April 16 in Grand Island and June 25 at the Viaero Event Center in Kearney.

Trumbull, 26, describes a roller derby bout as “in-tense and exciting.”

“I still get butterfl ies be-fore every game,” she said.

In their last game, the Roller Vixens came from be-hind to beat Central Kansas 149-148.

Curtis, 24, likes how the team members “were so pos-itive the whole time.” They were “encouraging each other to do better,” confi dent they were going to catch up “and ultimately we did. It was just a really fun game to be a part of. It was a clean game. It was fun to have everybody just so positive and ready to play,” she said.

Every roller derby bout includes collisions. “Yes, there’s a lot. I’m still pretty sore from the game,” Curtis said three days later.

But the sport does have rules. “You can’t hit anybody in the back because of back injuries. You can’t hit any-body above the shoulders. You can’t hit anybody in the face. You can’t trip anybody,” Trumbull said.

A lot of people think roller derby is violent or staged, Berglund said. “And it’s actually neither one of those things. We do hit each other but we try our best to do everything legally. We don’t want to do something that could hurt another player on the track.”

The rules are plentiful. “I still don’t even know all the rules,” said Emalie Petersen, 25. “It’s very complicated. I still get penalties and don’t know why I did.”

Like Trumbull, Petersen likes seeing the skaters exe-cute a play they’ve worked on.

“I think it makes us all proud, especially when we’ve

practiced it week in and week out,” said Petersen, whose derby name is Inspect Her Gadget.

Each team consists of jammers and blockers. Jam-mers are the point scorers.

Berglund, 33, is a jammer. “And so I get hit and I get knocked down a lot.”

When Berglund gets knocked down, she likes to pop right back up. Her atti-tude is, “I’m going to get up and I’m going to do it as fast and possible and move on.”

Adrian loves to hear the announcer say, “Venus Vic-torious, lead jammer!” That indicates she has broken through the pack and is ready to score some points.

“You kind of use what-ever you’re built with to your advantage,” Adrian said.

“Just because you’re small doesn’t mean you can’t be a good blocker or jammer,” Adrian said. “You might be able to whip around and get in front of somebody fast enough to block them. If you are of a sturdier build, you can use that to your advan-tage in roller derby as well,

because we need to knock other opponents out of the way.”

The Roller Vixens don’t dress immodestly, Curtis said. “We do encourage kids to come out and watch be-cause it is a very fun sport.”

Some people think a bout consists of “all-out vulgar violence, like girls in fi shnets and all that, and it’s not,” Trumbull said.

“We put a lot of time into trying to look uniform as a team.” Trumbull said. The language is also clean, she said.

The women get frustrated at times, but they try to “watch our mouth on the track.” Trumbull said.

Berglund likes the fact that the team supports orga-nizations like the Central Ne-braska Humane Society and the Crisis Center.

After each bout, the two teams dine together. Some-times, the home team puts together a potluck. In Grand Island, Dickey’s Barbeque Pit, one of the team’s spon-sors, feeds both squads. “And then we all go out,” Berglund said.

North Platte is a fi erce ri-val, but the team members are also friends who know each other well.

Berglund told the North Platte skaters that when they’re waiting for a game to begin, she never looks at their faces. “I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to play this game,” she said.

She doesn’t want to see who she might have to hit, because she might be tempted to let up “when I need to go full force,” she said.

She knows the two teams are going to hang out with each other afterward. “And I don’t want anybody upset with me at the end of the day.”
