Recap of 2015 CUW NACC Tournament runQuarterfinals vs. MSOE

Men’s Basketball pulls away from MSOE in NACC Tour-nament Quarterfinals

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Men’s Basketball team used a strong second half effort to pull away from MSOE in a NACC Tournament Quarterfinal win Saturday. The Falcons, who led by four points at the break, outscored the Raiders by 11 over the final 20 min-utes, gaining the 71-56 win.

CUW, the third seed in the NACC Tournament, will now face No. 2 Benedictine on Tuesday night in the semifinal round. The Eagles advanced to the semifinals thanks to a 64-55 win over Wisconsin Lutheran. CUW and Benedic-tine split the regular season series, each team winning on the road.

Three players paced the Falcons with double-dig-it point efforts Saturday, including Bradley Prinsen (Oostburg, Wis.) who had a team-best 17. Prinsen did his best work after the break, scoring 12 points on

5-of-8 shooting. Joining him in double-figures was junior Keith Kahlfeldt (New Berlin, Wis.) and senior Mark Scholz (Greenfield, Wis.), each tallying 14 points. Semi-finals at Benedictine

Falcons advance to NACC Tournament championship game

LISLE, Ill. – It didn’t matter who scored or defended for Concordia University Wisconsin on Tuesday night, be-cause all that mattered was the scoreboard showed it they advanced to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Con-ference Tournament championship game. The Falcons overcame a five-point deficit midway through the second half and drained six-straight free throws in the final 17 seconds during a 76-70 victory at Benedictine University.

CUW (third seed) will travel to No. 1-seeded Aurora Univer-sity on Saturday for a 2 pm matchup and the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament via the league’s automatic berth.

NACC Championship at Aurora

Men’s Basketball wins NACC Tournament

AURORA, Ill. – It took a lot of hard work and sweat this season, and Concordia University Wisconsin deserves to celebrate after winning the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a 73-71 decision over Aurora University.

The Falcons earned their first NACC Tournament title in program history behind a balanced scoring effort and timely 3-pointers. Mark Scholz made the game-winning layup with 29 seconds to play, but from then on it was a heart-stopping contest that made everyone inside Thornton Gymnasium bite their nails.

Aurora’s Tyler Hall had his jumper blocked by Scholz with 6.7 seconds to play and after a failed inbounds pass that went off a Falcon player’s leg, the Spartans had a chance to win the game with 6.4 seconds remaining. AU’s Bran-don Smith caught the inbounds pass in front of his own bench, dribbled to the top of the key and launched an off-balanced 3-pointer as the clock ticked away. At first nobody knew who was going to win as the ball hit the front of the rim, touched the backboard and bounced off the rim twice before falling to the floor.

The Falcons players, coaches, staff and fans erupted in excitement as they knew winning the NACC Tournament title was a hard-earned goal that could be checked off the list. The victory gives CUW the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
