Data is emerging as a more and more important resource for new value creation in manufacturing
Value chains are turning into value networks:
Horizontally, digital platforms connect industries and sectors even across international borders,
while they are vertically connecting raw material suppliers all the way to the end consumers.
The generated data can be the basis of innovative, digital Industrie 4.0 business models that enable
new added value.
Technology-centred discussion has moved toward business model centered approaches
Digital Business Model Architecture
How to monetise on new functionalities of industrial platforms?

Key FindingsStudy “Value Network as the Foundation for Digital Business Models”
By analysing 25 use cases, the Sino-German Company Working Group on Industrie 4.0 and Intelligent Manufacturing identified six business model clusters.
Page 11 03.MAR.2021 Sino-German Industrie 4.0 Cooperation
The business model analysis addresses the following four questions:
• Customer: Who are the target customers of the company?
• Value proposition: What does the company offer the customers?
• Value chain: How does the company, together with other partners, create this product or service?
• Revenue mechanism: How does the company create value in the form of revenue?

Measures to increase the adoption and maturity level of companies, especially of SMEs, are needed because the adoption and maturity levels vary by the size ofcompanies
Supporting spill overs between companies, especially from larger to smaller companies, are needed to realise value and productivity gains across the economy
Guidance on the evolving legal and regulatory environment is needed to foster the shift from data to value.
Key Take-Aways for the Public Sector
Page 13 03.MAR.2021 Sino-German Industrie 4.0 Cooperation
Getting from data to value is the next important step…consulting / advisory services (especially to SMEs), centered on a digital business model perspective (how to identify new value propositions), not on technology upgrading alone, are needed.
Security concerns…security must become a quality aspect and a part of the.business continuity management.
Lack of talent…clarity on data professions of the future and workflow is required.
