Planning Tips
Tripod Tips
• Turn off Image Stabilisation
• Use a wired or wireless
remote
• if you have neither try
the self timer
Camera Settings
Mid-range often provides
the sweet spot
(say F/8 to F/16)
The area to experiment with!
(can be up to 30 seconds or
even a lot longer! )
Keep it low
(100?)
Camera Settings ~ Go Manual!
Exposure compensation scale
may help as an exposure guide
Allows you to decide
Aperture and Speed
Camera Settings ~ Aperture Priority
Set the aperture and let the camera
decide the speed
Camera Settings ~ Bulb
• Shutter remains open until
released
• Very effective for recording a
succession of fireworks or for
capturing star trails
• Why “Bulb”
• In the old days squeezing
an air bulb would open the
shutter, and releasing it
would close it
Camera Settings ~ Focus
Go for Manual Focus
Camera Settings ~ Other Tips
RAW provides more flexibility in
post production editing
Use AWB or just experiment!

Starburst on street lights
• Use a narrow aperture ~ F/16 or higher
This will also give a greater depth of field
Star Trails
• Very long shutter speeds (can be into hours!)
Noise can be a problem, thus many photographers merge multiple 30
second continous exposures Image by:- Lincoln Harrison of Australia
