DERI - Some Statistics

• Located at the National University of Ireland, Galway

• Founded June 2003 as a CSET (Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology) funded by SFI (Science Foundation Ireland)

• Status August 2009: about 120 members and growing

• Largest Semantic Web Research Institute in the World

– Research Publications > 550. Participate in 12 standardisation groups

– Over 70 PhD’s /Masters in the pipeline

– 2 Professors, 14 Post Docs (PI’s) and 15 Research Assistants. Others are support

• Core Industrial Partners:

– MNC’s: Cisco, Nortel, Ericsson, Fidelity…

– SME’s: Storm, Celtrak, Cyntelix, Slidepath……

• Total Research Grants: about €48 million from SFI (€33m) EU Framework (€10m), EI (€5m), Industry (€1m)

DERI – Governance

Governance

There are three key groups that are involved in the governance of DERI:

– Oversight Board

– Scientific Advisory Board

– Senior Executive Committee.

DERI Oversight Board

• The Oversight Board provides governance, guidance and advice to the centre to ensure that its activities are consistent with its vision, goals and management plan.

• Representation from NUIG, Industry Partners, other Academic Institutions, other business representatives, DERI management

DERI - Governance

DERI Scientific Advisory Board• Provides scientific and technical guidance, advice and evaluations on the strategic direction and

performance of DERI.

• Identifies opportunities and promotes DERI when possible and appropriate.

• Represenation from international research bodies. Member of the Board is Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Internet

DERI Senior Executive Committee (SEC) • The SEC ensures the effective running of the CSET operations, including management of the following

activities: Scientific, Administrative, Financial, Business Development, Outreach, Knowledge Transfer, Human Resources, and Organisational Development, and External Relationships.

• The SEC’s membership consists of the CEO, Director and Vice Director, and Operations Manager
