DNE-1000Digital Editing Workstation System

The DNE-1000 Digital Editing

Workstation is a powerful non-linear

editing system designed for the

specific needs of news editing, from

short hard news stories to feature

documentaries.

The DNE-1000 is available both as a

stand alone system in combination

with dedicated local storage and as

one of several workstations connected

to a News Server System.

The Sony DNE-1000 combines the

speed and flexibility of disk-based

non-linear editing with Sony’s

precision, real time device control

with a “hands-on” VTR feel, real-time

INTRODUCTION

DNE-1000 Digital Editing

Workstation System

As a total system supplier for all of

the components of this server-based

non-linear editing system, Sony can

give you the confidence of a single

point of contact a source that takes

responsibility for total system design

and performance.

The Sony DNE-1000 brings it all

together in a powerful, cost-efficient

working tool that lets you move ahead

into the age of digital non-linear

editing today, without compromising

the total system functionality you will

need tomorrow.

effects without the need for time

consuming rendering, and the ability

to incorporate in-house graphics and

logos.

The key benefit of the DNE-1000’s

non-linear operation is the ability to

re-edit the material easily and quickly

in order to produce different versions

that vary by length, content, or

presentation style.

In combination with Betacam SX™

series recorders, audio and video

material can be loaded into the

DNE-1000 storage media at up to

4 x normal speed, greatly improving

efficiency.

Broadcast Quality Multi-EffectsThe 4:2:2 quality combined

switcher/DME option features a

spectacular array of real time effects,

including 434 preset effect patterns

and 32 original background patterns.

The User Program memory system

lets you create 40 user effects for

subsequent recall. Several keyers are

available, including a Chroma Keyer

with a color cancel function for

material shot on a plain color

background, a linear keyer for smooth

keying without jagged edges, and a

Downstream keyer for adding titles

and captions. Flying key is also

available using the effect patterns.

The Downstream Keyer features

Linear Key and Color Vector Key to

adjust color difference levels for

obtaining a clearer key signal.

For obtaining 3D effects with lighting

and trail, an optional board is

available.

Flexible Voice-Over AbilityWhether the pictures are cut to the

soundtrack or the commentary is

added later, the DNE-1000 handles

both methods flexibly and effectively.

Identity/Voice DisguiseAn indispensable news editing tool,

this DNE-1000 feature allows the

identity of interviewees or other

material information to be hidden

with special video and audio effects.

Video mosaic patterns and audio

pitch shifters can be programmed to

make any feature or landmark

indistinguishable, providing news

editors with a unique creative tool.

Familiar User InterfaceThe DNE-1000 User Interface retains

the familiar operational style of

current VTR editing and enhances it

with the new Graphical User Interface

(GUI) designed specifically for News

Editing.

The dedicated control panels feature

a jog/shuttle dial with hard keys for

source control, such as Go To In

Point, Go To Out Point, and keys for

marking and trimming.

For audio and video level adjustment,

a separate fader panel interacts with

the menu on the GUI to provide level

adjustment of the video and level and

equalization of the audio.

Advanced Disk ControlSony’s new protocol for controlling

disk devices ensures greater exacting

control of material with the full

benefit of fast non-linear access. Edit

Points can be determined by using

frame-by-frame jog accompanied by

recognizable audio. As a non-linear

device, the disk is able to accept not

only simple commands such as Jog,

Play etc, but can execute a complete

preview based on the Edit Decision

List (EDL) created by the editor. With

a simple operation, the operator can

make a trim and see the result

immediately.

wants to jog the material in order to

find the precise point to insert new

material.

The local storage enables jogging

through the material on the timeline

as if it had been recorded as a

complete file, but with the flexibility

of changing anything.

High-Quality Image CompressionThe MPEG2 4:2:2 Profile at Main

Level adopted by this digital editing

system yields superior component

digital picture quality at a cost-

efficient bit-rate of 18 Mbps.

525/625 Switchable OperationFor effective performance in any

studio environment.

4-Channel Non-Compressed AudioThe system provides 4-channel non-

compressed AES/EBU 16 bit, 48 kHz

Audio input/output, plus one audio

embedded SDI input/output.

The Sony DNE-1000 is designed

for use with a local storage unit

that maintains broadcast-quality

video in non-destructive editing.

Cut Only, A/B Roll, Voice-over

and Audio/Video Split is available.

Digitizing can also be

accomplished during editing,

saving valuable time and

speeding the editing process.

High-Speed Video/Audio/DataTransferAudio/Video files can be imported

from the DNW-A100/A100P Digital

Video Hybrid recorder and exported

to the server at up to four times

normal speed via SDTI (Serial Data

Transport Interface).

Note : SDTI is defined as SMPTE 305M.

Timeline ScrubbingThe edits on the timeline may contain

material from different files on

different tracks, but the operator

Audio EffectsFor audio, a wide-range of equalizer

and filtering sections help recover full

quality of sounds recorded in the field

under difficult conditions. A built-in

16-channel audio mixer lets you mix

down to four output channels.

Server ConnectionWhen connected to the central server

system, any number of DNE-1000’s is

able to prepare various versions of the

same material at the same time.

Editing can begin even while the

incoming feed is still being recorded,

eliminating the need for time-

consuming dubbing of tapes.

System FlexibilityThe DNE-1000 is a non-linear or

linear component editing system with

flexibility for switchable operation in

525/625 environments.

and multiple keystrokes have

been eliminated to offer simple,

quick and straightforward

operation.

The DNE-1000 provides a Graphical

User Interface (GUI) that has been

specifically designed for News

Editing. Analysis of the workflow in

news editing results in a GUI that

uses easily recognizable icons to

represent functions, showing essential

information clearly and

unambiguously. Complicated menus

There are three main windows to ensure fast and simple operation:• Viewer Window...........for selecting and marking material• Log Window ...............for displaying thumbnail images created by the user• Timeline Window........for creating/previewing/modifying/scrubbing the list.

In additions, this specificially designed “News GUI” is utilized by other Sony news-related editing systems, the DNE-700 and DNE-50, so that users quickly achieve complete versatility within the common workflow.

A/B Roll ConfigurationFor making longer programs where

time permits a more elaborate

program to be created, the A/B Roll

configuration offers video and audio

effects options that can be used to

add effects including 2D and 3D

moves, captions, and titles.

The DNE-1000 has a modular

construction, providing users

with choices for optimum

cost/benefit performance in

specific applications. This

modularity permits the same

editing system to be used for a

wide variety of applications,

reducing the investment required

for platforms and staff training.

Basic ConfigurationThe basic configuration of the

DNE-1000 has been designed to

satisfy the needs of broadcast news

operations: simplicity, speed, and

cost-efficiency. The emphasis is on a

newsroom’s ability to turn around a

short story quickly - but with the

ability to perform minimum functions

such as video level and audio level

setting and mixing.

Video Effects WindowWhen the optional Video Effects is installed, over 100 Wipes and 250 2D effects becomeavailable, including mosaic pattern forhiding identities. 3D Effects with Trail andLighting are also optional.

Audio Mixing WindowThe DNE-1000 supports 16channel audio mixing as standard, down to 4 program outputchannels.
