Some historyFrom: Chris Rusbridge Sent: 08 November 2000 11:31To: Peter HolmesCc: Donald Bell; 'Andrew Wale'; 'Mark Denham'Subject: Plans for a university 'e-prints' service Peter, at a meeting yesterday, we decided to go ahead with establishment ofa service to hold electronic pre-prints and if possible electronic re-printsof articles published by GU staff. We would plan to build this service usingemerging free software from the 'Open Archives Initiative', which willsupport inter-operability amongst many or all such servers, including forexample the Los Alamos Physics pre-print server, the REPEc economicsdistributed servers and the NCSTRL computing science servers. Our hope is to be able to launch this service in late January 2001. We wouldlike it to be sooner but realism must prevail. We would like to make a goodsplash at launch time, and we would like to use the RAE as an initial leverto get the service populated...

Some meandering...
• Access vs preservation?– What’s the promise?– It’s a bet, I mean a risk!– Avoid the pathological case... Use
common, well-documented formats
• Quality measures?– RLG for preservation– DINI for access repositories

Next steps?
• JISC Repositories, Preservation and Access Programme– Data– Link to RAE– etc
• Sustainability– Current workflow rather than retrospective loading – How we do things round here... So’ton ECS– Tipping point?
• NL Cream of Science... • >2000 papers per year?
– It’s the culture, stupid!
