Literacy today depends on understanding the multiple media that make up our high-tech reality and developing the skills to use them effectively.

Digital Literacy has many definitions. Just a few include:

1.The capability to use digital technology and knowing when and how to use it. (Ribble & Bailey, 2007)

2.Digital literacy is the ability to locate, organize, understand, evaluate, and create information using digital technology. It involves a working knowledge of current high-technology, and an understanding of how it can be used. (Digital Literacy)

3.A person’s ability to perform tasks effectively in a digital environment... Literacy includes the ability to read and interpret media, to reproduce data and images through digital manipulation, and to evaluate and apply new knowledge gained from digital environments. (Jones-Kavalier & Flannigan, 2006)

BROWSERS

A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web.

SEARCH ENGINE

A search engine is a website that catalogs websites and their contents. Different search engines will yield different results.

E-MAIL

E-mail is actually an abbreviation for electronic mail. It is a method of exchanging messages digitally.

In many ways, e-mail has replaced traditional mailings.

1. FACILITATE AND INSPIRE STUDENT LEARNING AND CREATIVITY

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness

b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources

c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes

a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources

b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies and providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources

c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information

d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools


5. Engage in Professional Development and Leadership Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional

community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:

a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning
