To identify and develop existing opportunities,
we apply Design Thinking methodology, an innovative
process introduced to the business world by
Stanford University as a way to address intractable
human concerns through design.

Two years ago, First Data’s
Innovation Lab embarked on a
journey to completely understand
how consumers interact with
their money and manage their
financial lives. Applying the
Design Thinking approach, we
drew upon logic, imagination,
intuition and systemic reasoning
to uncover unmet, unarticulated
consumer needs and potential
solutions that would benefit both
our clients and their end users.

First Data’s reimagined Digital Banking platform was
created using the understanding and knowledge we gained
from meeting with real consumers across the country and
learning how they feel about their finances – including banking,
bills, debt and spending. What we discovered was fascinating,
enlightening and led us to identify three distinct groups.
