TERMS:Be prepared to understand the general definitions of these terms, as well as what they imply fordigital audio. For example, will a lower or higher bit rate yield a higher-quality audio file?

Sampling - the process of converting sound into a digital file

Sample rate - measured in Hz, is a factor in audio quality

Bit rate - measured in bits, is a factor in audio quality

    Compression - reducing file size

Lossy compression - removes data from the file to reduce file size

Lossless - does not remove data from file

Stereo (stereophonic) - 2 waves of sound

Mono (monaural) - 1 wave of sound

    AUDIO FILE FORMATS

    CONVERSION

Draw a line from the compression type on the left to the appropriate compression types on the right,so that each line represents a conversion that would result in NO loss of quality.

File Extension Compressed? Lossy/Lossless File Size (S/M/L)

Advanced Audio Coding .aac compressed lossy S

Apple Lossless .m4a compressed lossless M

Audio Interchange File Format .aiff uncompressed lossless L

    Free Lossless Audio

    Compression.flac compressed lossless M

    MPEG-2 Layer III .mp3 compressed lossy S

    Wave .wav uncompressed lossless L
