Digipak Research and Construction

Humaira Chuhan

ResearchKaty Perry’s digipak has an overall theme of sweets and candy as seen in her music video ‘California Gurls’. The disks are printed as donuts and a candy cane design, as well as cupcakes being one of the main attractions. These elements could portray Katy as a sweet and girly-innocent character. Her placement on the pink ‘clouds’ suggest candy floss as well as an angel like figure. However, Katy is actually presented as seductive through her body language and lack of clothing which of course contradicts her ‘cute’ and ‘innocent’ image.

The songs featured are popular with the target audience, as well as corresponding with the theme.

ResearchCeline Dion could be seen as a ‘depressing’ singer

ResearchDistorture’s digipak has the theme of red and white. The red seems very strong and almost brutal which may relate to ‘torture’ in their name. The white could connote purity and peace, contrasting with the red.

Their music is dark rock which explains the image of the bloody hand, this is a powerful picture which represents their genre as a whole.

PrepFrom my research I have extracted the main details of a digipak: The theme of the digipak has to

correspond with the genre of music as well as the overall ‘feel’. Our genre is acoustic, and many of Sylvia’s songs are depressing and personal; therefore the digipak has to feature certain elements to make the genre clear.

Planning

Potential Covers

PlanningSimilar to Katy Perry’ digipak, we chose to use the same theme present in a music video. As Katy Perry’s theme of candy is in her popular video and song ‘California Gurls’, similarly in ‘Don’t Know Why’ there is a theme of rebellion and graffiti. Having this in mind, we chose it to be the theme of the digipak, we already had taken pictures of our character with the illuminati graffiti.

We chose to have our character on the cover rather than the actual artist because it connects with the main song which will hopefully be recognisable and therefore attract our target audience who are familiar with the character and setting.

There are no close ups of our character to avoid other audiences mistaking her as the artist as well as wanting to have as much of the graffiti in the shot as possible.
