Sales Boom in PaphosPrices have come down massively to reallylow levels this month and it seems that morepeople are recognising these goldenopportunities.

One classic example is Peyia PrestigeParadise Villa, which has just been reducedfrom €1.38 million to only €980,000 lastFriday.

http://www.fitzgeraldprestige.com/properties/1507peyiaparadise/

Not surprisingly it’s attracting offers from all over the world and will soonbe snapped up by some enterprising buyer.

And who are the biggest buyers? Not the Russians, not the Chinese … butthe British!

Irreverently called ‘Whingeing Poms’ by the Australians, the Brits have badpress over the years for their pessimistic mindset, but right now they’re thebiggest buyers and definitely not the biggest whingers.

Perhaps spurred on by their latest sporting successes and the improvedeconomic outlook of Britain, there are many more British cash buyers thanever before.

Smart buyers from all over the world, including Cypriots, are coming toPaphos in drovesto buy ourquality propertyeven in theheights of thishot summer; webelieve it’s theFitzgerald’scredo of qualityat realistic priceswith Title Deedsthat brings themhere.

PISC does Paphos proud

Since becoming a sponsor of the Ladies’race in the recent Paphos InternationalSailing Club (PISC) Regatta this year,Fitzgerald’s has become a little moreinvolved in the island’s sailing scene.

We felt a flicker of pride to hear ourPaphos sailors had been asked to trainand send teams to assist at the first ISAFWorld Youth Championships in Limassolfrom 11th to 19th July.

This was a massive event of worldwideimportance as well over 300 youngsailors (aged up to 17) from 61 countriesassembled at the eastern end of the townto race several different internationalclass dinghies.

PISC Commodore Chas Kimberreported back: ‘The craft selected forthe youngsters were different from thosewe sail at the Club and included 420dinghies, SL16 Catamarans foropen/mixed crews, some RSXwindsurfers open to both boys and girlsand finally the 29er which is made inNorth Shields, Tyne & Wear.

These were a delight to see withcolourful gennakers; we were allthrilled with the spectacle and we hadgood wind/weather all week.’

That’s not to say it was all ‘plain sailing’to get to that stage! First the registrationteam, headed by PISC Hon Sec JaquiBiggs, was tasked with pulling togetherthe competitors’ photographs to produce

Page 5: Digest august 2013

passes for each team … even those thatturned up without photos.

Chas emphasised: ‘What could havebeen an amazing mess was resolved byapproximately 7.30pm on the first day!Day 2 had only two small teams left toregister!’

Kimber was also part of the safetycrews which accompanied the PISCrescue boat ‘Safety Sinka’ throughoutthe racing day, sometimes not finishingtill after dark.

PISC RIB teams were impressive inboth turnout and skills he confirmed:‘Every member was grateful for theextensive winter training we undertookthis year as all our RIB driving skills

were needed! Safety Sinka performedfaultlessly and was lead "Rescue" boat forArea Alfa racing (Lasers and 29ers).’

For pictures, competitors and winners, docheck out www.isafyouthworlds.comApart from the obvious pride andpleasure in providing two different andvery important functions for theinternational youngsters, a differenthighlight for Chas was the openingceremony and team flag parade in the oldtown.

He related: ‘It was lovely and initimate;all teams brought water from their homecountries to mix in a large pithari whichwas then emptied into the sea.

The whole thing was very relaxed withsinging and laughter; it all had a greatatmosphere. We at PISC were very proudto represent Paphos at this world classevent.’

PAFOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL 2013:Presents G. Donizetti's “L’Elisir D’Amore”

in a coproduction with Opera Futura Verona and theparticipation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra

on 6, 7, 8 Septemberat the Pafos Medieval Castle

With the popular, romantic, comic opera L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) byItalian composer Gaetano Donizetti Pafos Aphrodite Festival 2013 opens its curtain.L’Elisir d’Amore constitutes one of the most charming and melodic operas of theinternational repertoire but also one of the old time favourites of opera loversworldwide. The choice of this work of opera brings innovation to the Festival sincea comic opera will be presented instead of lyric drama.

Donizetti’s comic masterpiece L’Elisir d’Amore will be presented in a coproductionbetween the Company Pafos Aphrodite Festival Cyprus and the lyric organizationOpera Futura Verona with the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

The opera consists of two acts and the Italian libretto was written by Felice Romanibased on Eugène Scribe’s Le Philtre (1831). It premiered at Teatro dellaCanobbiana, in Milan on 12 May 1832.

This opera has established Donizetti as composer of comic opera since he managedto introduce the emotional element into this genre of opera. In this work of operaDonizetti created a pleasant atmosphere where the dominant features are brightcolours and pure emotions which to this day allows audiences to leave with a smilesince comic elements are followed by emotional scenes.

For additional information please contact the offices of Pafos AphroditeFestival Cyprus in Pafos at 26822218 or visit the company’s website

Water Divination in PeyiaWhen buying a large plotand planning a thrivinggarden the first concernwould be water supply.Although we are luckyenough to have amplewater in our dams thisyear, it is also true thatsome years are decidedlydry.

To a keen gardener, aready water supply isimperative and many goto extreme lengths to drill bore holes looking for water locked away in undergroundpools in the porous Cyprus limestone. Each municipality manages the undergroundwater diligently. Procedures are complex and permits are also required.

Back in 1998, Jessops built a luxurious home situated on a spectacular hillside plotof 3230 sq mtrs which boasts wonderful views over Peyia to the Mediterranean.

This property features a beautiful five bedroom villa, with maid’s quarters, aluscious garden, a swimming pool and a fullsized tennis court: visithttp://www.fitzgeraldcyprus.com/properties/1507 to see what we mean.

The only thing that wasmissing was thenecessary abundance ofwater to keep the lushgardens at their colourful, luxuriant best.

The answer? A borehole, if you are luckyenough to a) find wateron your plot, and b)obtain the necessarylicensed to operate a bore

hole. There are many pros and cons of sinking a bore hole but it is not an easyundertaking when your ‘bright idea’ come after the tennis court, the villa, gardenand terraces have all been completed!

Page 13: Digest august 2013

However, don’t despair. The beauty of living in a traditional village is theabundance of ‘local area expertise’ whether you want to know how to pickle localcapers, start a vineyard, keep mosquitoes away or find out if you have a healthyflow of subterranean water! After mentioning something of the idea in the village, soon a mild mannered chap turns up with an empty plastic water bottle! Needless tosay something more like a willow branch or at least a metal coat hanger was thevery least that was expected! However, rules of hospitality had to be observed, albeit begrudgingly under the circumstances!

Anyway, formalities over and following an aperitif or two, the chap gently perchedthe water bottle on the open palm of his hand and carefully and meticulouslycrisscrossed the hilly terrain of the plot.

Of course, and as you would expect, the bottle took a tumble every now and thembut this was expected you may say. Imagine the surprise when the chap comesinforms you that the spots where the bottle tumbled indicated the presence ofunderground water! You are literally floating on water, he says and proceeds to tellyou where to drill and gives you an idea how deep the well needs to be.

Needles to say, all of this turned out to be true! Luckily, with the help of this supertalented Cypriot, the family now has a constant – nonpotable water supply, anincreasingly lovely garden, a new friend and has a Cypriot tale to tell. Welcome toCyprus!
