The tourism industry is ambitiously aiming to attract2.5 million visitors to the island and is boldly forginginto specific, aggressive marketing to develop a

special interest tourist product on one hand, and on the other, the CTO is looking totap into EU development funds to upgrade/renovate local hotels to boost localcapacity.

The banks have just announced the start of lending again and have lifted all therestrictions on deposit transfers to overseas to one million Euros per person permonth. With the average property price at around 300,000 Euros this was not apressing requirement yet it will go a long way to help liquidity of the top endprestige home sales.

Arrival of the Energy Performance Certificater, EPC, in Cyprus is a long waitedmilestone and It should go a long way to demystify the energy performancecharacteristics of many a property in Cyprus. The law was passed in 2010, yet onlynow have the authorities realized that it is time for the EPC to be done. Whilst theenergy certification is an important issue to the owner, buyer or tenant, it is also anissue that is very important to all agents. The lack of the EPC is the missing link tomarket property.

Paphos , for example, has the most properties for sale in Cyprus and only 27certified local ‘professionals’ valuers/assessors to do the job. But, the spring is inthe air, the outlook is much brighter, and theprospects are excellent.

Cyprus reclaiming traditional markets in 2015

Tourism arrivals were up 7.7 per cent in Januaryand February this year compared to the sameperiod last year, according to CTO chairmanAngelos Loizou.

In the first two months of the year, tourist arrivalstotaled 92,508 compared with 85,903 in the sameperiod of 2014.

Loizou told the Cyprus News Agency that arrivals were due to increase from theUK, Germany, France, Holland, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries.

There was also increased interest from France as a lot of French tourists wereavoiding traditional destinations such as Egypt and Morocco “and they see Cyprusas a safe destination”.

Cyprus was also working to increase arrivals from Israel and the Arab countries, theCTO boss said, and the signs were encouraging.

In terms of numbers, Loizou said arrivals from the UK had increased 7.2 per cent inFebruary this year and by 20 per cent from Greece while the Russian decline wasevident last month with a 10.4 per cent decrease.

CYPRUS has been listed as one of the top five value destinations for Britons thisEaster, according to a new survey by the UK Post Office.

In the Post Office survey, the island came in third behind the Algarve and the Costadel Sol, and was trailed by Tenerife and Orlando in Florida on the cost of a basketof holiday items with comparative prices for the same time last year.

Earlier this week, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation indicated that numbers were upfrom traditional markets such as the UK, Germany and Scandinavian countries asarrivals from Russia were on the decline.

February property sales 5% up boosted by weaker euro

The number of property transactions rose 5 per cent inFebruary to 325 compared to the respective month of2014, A real estate expert said the increase may berelated to the weak euro vis­à­vis the British poundwhich makes purchases in Cyprus, mainly in coastalareas, more attractive.

Finance ministry raises money transfer cap to €1m

The finance ministry said it furtherrelaxed capital controls introducedfollowing the March 2013 bankingcrisis.

The cap for money transfers abroadwas raised to €1m from €50,000 perperson per credit institution, the financeministry said in an emailed statementtoday.

“The order will remain in place for 21 days”.

Central Bank governor Chrystalla Georghadji said March 5, that all capitalrestrictions will be lifted by the end of the first quarter of the year.

EU convinced over halloumi’s traditional Cypriotcharacter, Minister says

The process of designating halloumi cheese as a Cypriot traditional product is at anadvanced level, Minister of Agriculture Nicos Kouyialis has stated on Wednesday.

The Cypriot government has filed an application to the EU for designatinghalloumi as a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and according to theMinister, the relevant file is now at the stage of translation, after it has passed allchecks by the competent European Commission Directorate General.

In the next few days, the application file will be published in the Official Journal ofthe EU, Kouyialis went on to say.He added that this signifies that theEU is convinced that halloumi is aCypriot traditional product, openingthus the way for assigning it PDOstatus.

The designation of halloumi willopen new horizons, benefiting thewider economy, Kouyialisconcluded.

Germania commences flights to Cyprus

Paphos airport has welcomed the first flight of Germania Airlines which is offeringflights from five cities in Germany, Hermes airports said in a joint statement fromthe Cyprus Tourism Association (CTO) and the Paphos Regional Board of Tourism.

The German airline is offering flights from Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and Erfutto Paphos and from Munich to Larnaca. Some began operating earlier this weekwhile all will be flying by April 1.

The move is expected to generate financial benefits for Paphos and for the island’stourism, Paphos Regional Board of Tourism Executive Director NasosHadjigeorgiou said. “It will also contribute to the reduction of unemployment in thenear future, mitigate the seasonality and promote the image of Paphos, worldwide,”he said.

The Berlin­Paphos route will have one flight per week on Wednesdays, whichbegan on March 25. The Hamburg­Paphos route will also have one flight per week,also on Wednesdays as of March 25.

The Dusseldorf­Paphos route begins on March 29 with two flights per week onWednesdays and Sundays, and the Munich­Larnaca flight will be operated onTuesdays with one flight per week as of March 31.

The Erfurt­Paphos route will have one flight per week on Wednesdays, startingfrom April 1.

The airline is currently expanding its operations in international markets, expandingits base at London­Gatwick Airport.
