Dubai is the centre for food safety activity in the region and each
year the city hosts the biggest food safety event in the Middle
East, the Dubai International Food Safety Conference. Dubai isemerging as the main hub of international food trade and a para-
dise for food lovers. There are more than 13500 food establish-
ments in Dubai that are involved in importing, exporting, proc-
essing, preparing or selling of about 6 million tonnes of food that
comes from around 150 different countries. People from more
than 200 countries visit or work in Dubai and there is food to
satisfy the taste of everyone which makes Dubai a true Global
Food Village. This love for food also qualifies the city as an
ideal location for a global food safety conference. Held alongside
another popular food event, the Gulfood exhibition, the confer-
ence is a meeting point of food safety professionals from differ-
ent countries and cultures and over the five years the conferencehas played a very important role in enhancing food safety in the
region. More than 1200 people attended the conference in 2010
and with each year, the conference has been getting bigger and
better. .
The Sixth Dubai International Food Safety Conference will
discuss one of the most relevant and timely topics Food Safety
in the Emerging Economies. The conference that will be held
on the 28th of February and the 1st of March, 2011 at the Dubai
Convention and Exhibition Centre will address food safety
challenges faced by the countries that are emerging as mass
producing economies, but have food control systems that are not
always as well organized and developed as in the
industrialized countries. The two day conference will look at
ways and means to come up with achievable, reliable and
sustainable solutions to enhance food safety in emergingeconomies. The conference aims to bridge the gap between the
developed and the emerging countries by providing a platform
to share knowledge and experience and facilitating mutual
cooperation among regulatory agencies and the food industry.
Food safety is a global challenge and we need strong
partnerships to protect people from unsafe food and make the
food available and affordable to all through measures that are
sustainable.
