MERISTEMATIC TISSUEa) Apical Meristem - present at the growing tips of stems and roots increases the length of the stem and root.

responsible for increase in length, the linear growth of an organ.

    b) Lateral Meristem- consist of cells which mainly divide in one plane it causes the organ to increase in diameter and growth.

occurs beneath the bark of the tree

    c) Intercalary Meristem- located in between permanent tissues. present at the base of node, inter node and on leaf base.

responsible for growth in length of the plant.

    PERMANENT TISSUE

    Simple Permanent Tissue

Parenchyma: cells loosely packed ,i.e. large spacesbetween cells.

:it provides support to plants and also stores food,

    nutrients and water .

:it sometimes in some situations they contain chlorophylland are called chlorenchyma and in aquatic plants it is

called arenchyma which gives them buoyancy.

Collenchyma : provides flexibility to the plants.: allows easy bending of various parts of the plant.

:also provides mechanical support to plants.:found in leaf stalks below the epidermis.

:cells living, elongated and irregularly thickened in the corners.

    :very little intercellular space.

Sclerenchyma :makes the plant hard and stiff:cells are dead and narrow as walls are thickened due lignin a

substance that acts like cement .

:present in stems, around vascular bundles in the veins of leafs

and in the hard covering of seeds and nuts .

    COMPLEX PERMANENT

    TISSUE

Xylem conductive tissue and constitutes a vascular

    bundle.

    - -Transports food and minerals to all parts of the plant

    from the root .

    - - Consists of Tracheids , vessels , xylem

    parenchyma and xylem fibres .

Phloem - conductive tissue and also constitutes a

    vascular bundle.

    - -Transports food from the leaves to other parts of the

    plant .

    - - Its made up of sieve tubes , companion cells ,

    phloem fibres and phloem parenchyma.

    ANIMAL TISSUES

Epethelial Tissue- The epithelial tissues areformed by layers of cells that cover organ surfaces such as

the surface of the skin, the airways, the reproductive tract, and the inner lining of the digestive tract.

    - this tissue provides a barrier between the external

environment and the organ it covers.- - Epithelial tissue helps to protect organisms from

    microorganisms, injury, and fluid loss.

Connective tissue- connective tissuesare fibrous tissues.

-They are made up of cells separated by non-living

material, which is called extracellular matrix.

-Connective tissue holds other tissues together suchas in the formation of organs, and has the ability

    to stretch and contract passively.

Eg: blood , Bones , Ligaments , Tendons

Muscular tissue -Muscle cells form the activecontractile tissue of the body known as muscle tissue.

    - Muscle tissue functions to produce force and causemotion, either locomotion or movement within internal

    organs.

    - - Muscle tissue is separated into three distinct categories:visceral or smooth muscle, which is found in the inner

linings of organs; skeletal muscle, in which is found

attached to bone providing for gross movement; andcardiac muscle which is found in the heart, allowing it to

contract and pump blood throughout an organism.

Nervous tissue Cells of the nervous tissue arehighly specialized for being stimulated and then

transmitting the stimulus very rapidly from one place to

    another within the body.

    - The brain. Spinal cord and nerves are all composed of

    the nervous tissue.

    - The cells of this tissue are called nerve cells or neurons.

    - Many nerve fibres bound together by connective tissuemake up a nerve .

    - Nerve impulses allow us to move our muscles when we

    want to.
