Differences shown in the tablesfor such small groups may be simply the resultof sampling variability and, therefore, cautionshould be applied when using them. All statementsof comparison made in the text of this report,however, are statistically significant at the 95percent level. This report features comparisons between thefamilies residing in the North and West and thosein the South. The South, as referred to in thisreport, is the South census region and is comprisedof the following States: Alabama, Arkansas,Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia,Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Maryland, NorthCarolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee,Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. North and West,as used in this report, refers to the combinationof families living in the Northeast, North Central,and West census regions and is comprised of theremainder of the States.

The term “family,” as used in this report,refers to a group of two or more persons relatedby blood, marriage, or adoption and residingtogether. One person in each family was designatedas the head. The head of the family is usuallythe person regarded as the head by the members ofthe family. Families in which the head of the familyand his wife are both resident members at thetime of the survey are termed “husband-wifefamilies.”

Although the time periods covered by the incomestatistics refer to calendar years 1969, 1968, and1959, characteristics such as type of family andregion refer to the time of enumeration, March1970 and 1969, and April 1960, respectively.

Family income is the algebraic sum of wages,salaries, net income from self-employment, SocialSecurity, interest, dividends, public assistance,etc., received by all members of the family. Themedian income is the amount which divides theincome distribution into two equal groups, onehaving incomes above the median and the otherhaving incomes below the median.

In each table, the individual estimates andpercentages have been rounded independently, sothat the component parts do not always add tothe total
