CSR:

DIFC 2010 Charity Walk for HaitiOn the 26th of March, DIFC, in partnership with Bank Sarasin-Alpen and Alpen Capital, hosted the

DIFC Charity Walk 2010, a two kilometre walk around the DIFC district, to raise funds to support

Dubai Cares’ programmemes in Haiti - aimed at bringing primary aged children affected by the

earthquake back into the safe environment of school. Around 350 people joined in the walk,

raising more than AED 13,000 in registration and cash donations on the day, and creating four

community art pieces that were auctioned at Art Nights, the proceeds of which were donated to

Dubai Cares.

Art Nights @ Gate Village Charity AuctionThe Art Nights @ Gate Village series of events ended the season with a charity auction of all

the artworks created during the first three Art Nights events. Art Nights @ Gate Village supports

independent and emerging artists by offering them a platform to demonstrate their skills through

live art projects. As an extension of that support, half the profits of the artworks sold went to the

participating artists while the other half was donated to the Dubai Autism Center – a nonprofit

organisation based in Dubai that serves children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Art Around DIFC:

The following artworks will be on display around DIFC from May – June 2010

Artist : Chittrovanu Mazumdar

Artwork: Untitled

Description: Mixed media on canvas

Sizes: 290 x 198 cm and 274 x 244 cm

Location: Gate Building, East Wing Lobby

Display duration: 5 March - 5 June 2010 (on loan from 1x1 Art Gallery)

An artist with a truly international sensibility, Chittrovanu Mazumdar draws from

an ever – shifting sea of eclectic sources. Dramatic plays of light and heightened

colour values are visual hallmarks of his sophisticated oeuvre. Mazumdar’s

imagery emerges out of daily discoveries: a word, a glance, the heartrending/

blood –chilling phrase, a fleeting mise en scene…the rise and crest of body

imprisoned in tight freeze – frame: both source and association are intensely

private and sensual.

In his paintings, contours of anatomy can be seen slipping into/emerging from

non – representative fields of colour. Figuration gives way to a highly charged,

potent movement towards abstraction. The resultant image appears forever in

a state of becoming. Interested in the ‘space between words’ and the unspoken

nuance, Mazumdar revels in creating exciting surrounding spaces rife with

private codes and charged with stimuli that lead the viewer, by sheer dint of

association, to his artistic/ conceptual concerns.

Artist : Vivek Vilasini

Artwork: Bridges of Seven Climes

Description: Fibre glass pots with jute rope

Sizes: 91 x 698 x 91 cm

Location: Gate Building, East Wing Lobby

Display duration: 5 March - 5 June 2010 (on loan from 1x1 Art Gallery)

Vilasini began his career as a radio officer in the Navy, he then studied Political

Science at the University of Kerala before training in sculptural practices

from traditional Indian craftsmen, which marked the beginning of his artistic

practice. This atypical career naturally led him to a strong interest in multimedia

techniques. Constructed with glass pots and rope, “Bride of the Seven Climes” is

a symbolic representation of the materials used, the visuals and the text. Where

the rope binds and limits the possibility of infinite extension and freedom, the

bowl holds - the possibility to contain. The work comprising of seven pots is

not merely in the quantitative but also in the symbolic qualities of numbers.

Seven colors in the rainbow, seven ages, seven days of the week, seven notes of

musical scale, seven wonders of the world, the seven seas.

Art & Culture

Artist: Gita Meh

Artwork: Sweet City

Description: Nabat (Sugar) & Acrylic structure

Sizes: 200 x 196 cm

Location: Gate Village 8, Podium

Display duration: 15 March - 15 June 2010

Gita Meh works with many mediums, from paintings to installations, sculpture

to poetry, photography to performance; in her attempt to touch all aspects of

sensation and intellect in her views. She has often involved herself with food

preparations and rituals, thus engaging taste, smell and touch, as well sound

and sight. Sweet City follows in this vein.

This sculpture has been specially made for the DIFC by the Artist and will

become part of its corporate collection.

Artist: Rania Ezzat

Artwork: Yellow Ball

Description: Road Safety Mesh

Sizes: 250 x 250 cm

Location: Under the Gate

Display duration: 22 March - 22 June 2010 (on loan from Carbon 12 Gallery, Dubai)

This installation deals with the signs of eternal renewal and re-emergence of

life, a reminder of our past and the life to come. Crossing through deserts

and streets from chaos to order and back, “Yellow Ball” is literally a rolling

kilometer of work. The combination of the notion of time and space, effort and

achievement is paying homage to workers and work itself.

‘Digital Works’ by Chittrovanu Mazumdar

Bridge 2 Lobby

April 18 – May 13, 2010

Organised jointly by DIFC and 1 x 1 Art Gallery, an exhibition of selected works of Chittrovanu Mazumdar, one of India’s

leading artists, is being shown at Bridge 2 Lobby. The exhibition features unique photographic perspectives of the harsh

topography of rural Jharkhand in central India. Three series of photographs, including landscapes and earthscapes, are

showcased along with a single channel video piece and a wall projection.

The photographs explore the enigmatic, almost lunar vistas of the Jharkand region. Mazumdar dissolves the distant horizons

and billowing cloud formations of the flat landscape into a reductive abstraction. At the same time, this unforgiving

landscape is a metaphor for the rural politics of an area that has long harboured extremist political activity. The landscapes

in the photographs reveal a scorched firmament of cracked mud, rocks and gullies, where solitary trees stand in rare

defiance of the hostile elements. In Mazumdar’s hands, their very uniformity is transformed into a study of texture and

tone. The muted colours and burnished surfaces imbue the works with a sacred, mural-like quality. The same landscape is

featured in the video piece, overlaid with an audio collage that includes readings from Rilke’s Elegies.

‘Project MEGA’

Gate Village Podium Level

26 May to 26 June, 2010

Young Emirati artist and designer Mohammed Abedin is adding his touch to the

world of ‘vinyl toy culture’, with his company Foo Dog, which launched ‘Project:

MEGA’, the largest Custom Toys Exhibition in the Middle East. Featuring the work

of 100 talented and upcoming UAE-based artists, it is set to be one of the largest

artistic collaborations in the region. Abedin is an avid supporter and cultivator

of urban art and culture in the UAE and plans to use Foo Dog and MEGA as a

platform to help launch local artists onto the world stage.

Foo Dog is an urban arts collaborative company, founded in 2008 by Mohammed

Abedin and focuses on cultivating the urban art scene in the UAE and creating

limited edition designer toys, art and apparel. Visit www.foo-dog.com for more

The Empty QuarterMay 2010: ‘Fragrance from the Sufi Garden’ Photography Exhibition by Shems FriedlanderShems Friedlander’s work on the Whirling Dervishes has, for good reason, attracted

much attention. The photography is atmospheric, luminescent and, from a distance,

nearly abstract. He relies on the documentation of shape and light more than individual

portraiture. He uses natural lighting, movement and the impression of movement which

lingers like grainy, ghostly residue, framing each dancing figure.

A Splash of Vegas in Dubai

The DIFC community recently saw the opening of Caramel Restaurant & Lounge, a new ultra-lounge established by Las-Vegas based The Light Group, which offers Dubai’s visitors and residents the very best of its twin venue in Las Vegas. We spoke to Jim Moaddab, The Light Group Dubai’s Director of Operations, about Caramel’s offerings at DIFC.

1. What inspired The Light Group to establish Caramel Restaurant & Lounge in Dubai?

A city of quality like Dubai deserves the sort of hospitality our venues are known for in the US. Also, DIFC, which is well

known internationally for its world-class standards of innovation, dynamism and design, serves as the ideal launch pad

for our expansion outside of the US. The values and atmosphere of the city sit well with us as we are a progressive group

always seeking to deliver something new to our guests.

2. What kind of audience does Caramel Restaurant & Lounge target?

Caramel Lounge at the Bellagio is a well-established celebrity haunt, which is widely recognised for both its exclusivity and

its delicate balance of energy and intimacy. The Dubai version provides the same sophisticated environment attracting a

range of guests such as VIPs, socialites and young professionals.

3. Ambience is an important element of Caramel Restaurant & Lounge; what is the philosophy behind its décor?

We wanted to create an ultra-lounge that has a warm, inviting ambience ideal for unwinding with co-workers and friends,

while keeping it sleek and sophisticated. Low amber lighting, dark wood and plush seating throughout keep the space

inviting and comfortable. The word Caramel conjures up ideas of warm colors, seduction, taste and we try to reflect this

with our design and decor to provide a sleek and intimate space.

Feature

4. Has Caramel Restaurant & Lounge created something different and unique for its Dubai clientele?

The Dubai venue is spread over 10,000 square feet that provides seating for 233 guests. Caramel Restaurant & Lounge

offers an intimate and all inclusive space that is great not only for a business lunch or an intimate dinner but also as a late

night hot spot. The outside space boasts nine secluded cabanas, which can dovetail with adjoining cabanas to seat larger

groups. All this is part of a terrace that seats up to 138 guests. To make the most of the good weather, the open-air dining

offers guests views of the Dubai skyline and, thanks to the opening glass walls, guests never feel separate from the inside

restaurant, lounge and entertainment.

5. Caramel Lounge in Las Vegas is a well-established celebrity haunt; do you hope to have a similar profile for the Dubai

restaurant?

The Dubai venue has taken the best elements of its twin venue in Las Vegas and is already developing its own unique profile

in the city that is attracting a similarly energetic and international crowd.

6. How would you describe the cuisine at Caramel Restaurant & Lounge?

Executive Chef Brian Massie has designed the menu to include the signature dishes from its Vegas sibling, which are a

high-end take on classic American dishes, including house favorites; Lobster & Grilled Mango Tacos, Ponzu Yellow Fin Tuna,

Signature Chicken Lollipops, Petit Kobe Sliders and Mac & Cheese Sticks with truffle.
