DPF Fitting AdviceDo not use exhaust paste.Ensure all joints are properly sealed.Check all sensor tubes are free from blockages.Refit lambda, exhaust gas pressure and temperature sensors, observe the manufacturers torque settings, do notover tighten. Reconnect the wiring as necessary.Ensure the additive tank is full and the additive injection system is working correctly.Check that the fuel injection system is operating correctly.Once the new DPF unit has been installed the ECU must be reset by a main dealer or independent garage withan ECU diagnostic tool to clear any fault codes/service warnings.

Type Approval is required on some DPF units, as detailed below.LegislationOn 13th August 2009 new legislation, (Motor Vehicle Regulation, SI 2009 No. 1899) came in to effect making itillegal in the UK to fit a non-type approved catalytic converter to vehicles registered on or after 1st March 2001.The legislation therefore applies to all Y registration plate vehicles onwards.The new law is policed by the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) which is empowered to make random visits tomanufacturers, distributors, fitting stations and garages to inspect product at the point of sale. Failure to complywith the law can lead to a £5,000 fine.If any non approved combined unit is found on the market destined for a vehicle registered for UK road use onor after 1 March 2001, it will be treated by the VCA in the same way as a non-type approved catalytic converterand would be subject to the same legal penalties.Further information is available via the VCA website: www.vca.gov.uk and www.Klarius.euDPF Filters (filter only, without integral catalyst)Euro 4 vehicles - There is no requirement or possibility of approving a replacement DPF, so it is acceptable to fitthese items without Type Approval.Euro 5 vehicles - Type approval is required for Euro 5 equipped vehicles and compulsory for all vehicles withDPF registered on or after 1st September 2009, though some applications may have been introduced earlier.This is required for Filter only units.DPF Combined units (with integral catalyst)Euro 4 & Euro 5 - Where a DPF is supplied as part of a unit with a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst, the DOC shouldbe Type Approved according to 70/220/EEC Annex XIII. Effectively this will mean testing the combined unit asone product. In this case all combined units must be Type Approved for Euro 4 onwards.

Diesel particulate filters are not the same as a traditional exhaust component, where the only problem is corro-sion. The DPF is a component that can be affected/damaged by other components. In most cases these arewithin the engine management system.The primary concern with preserving the life of your particulate filter is to ensure your vehicle is correctly andregularly serviced and maintained at all times. Worn service items contribute very significantly to failedparticulate filter statistics.Any misfires, flat spots, poor performance, abnormal running, or appearance of dashboard warning lightsshould be brought to the attention of your garage immediately. Ignoring such warnings could seriously damageyour diesel particulate filter.Frequent short journeys contribute towards a shorter particulate filter life. Unless the DPF periodically reachesthe correct operating temperature for regeneration then the filter will start to become blocked/restricted and thismay lead to permanent failure.If the vehicle employs a fuel additive system in addition to the DPF, ensure the fuel additive level neverreaches below the manufacturers recommended minimum. Lack of fuel-borne catalyst will make itdifficult/impossible for the vehicle to regenerate the filter and permanent DPF damage or failure mayensue.Driving through floods/fords with the catalytic converter and/or DPF at operating temperature can cause a“thermal shock” situation, leading to premature failure.

Why do we need Diesel Particulate Filters?Even the most modern diesel engines produce fine soot particles (PM10’s), which although invisible to the nakedeye, cause irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract, and in more severe cases are directly linked to lung cancer.

Fitting a diesel particulate filter can reduce tailpipe emissions of PM10 particulates from a diesel engine by over90%. European emissions regulations regarding particulate matter mean that their use will be effectivelymandatory for all new diesel cars by 2010.

How do DPFs work?

Unlike a catalytic converter a DPF is not a flow through device, it works by forcing the gasses to flow through thefilter. As the channels of the filter are blocked at alternate ends, the gasses are forced to flow through the cellwalls in order to exit the filter. The cell walls are porous, enabling the gasses to pass through, but trapping anyparticulate matter. This particulate matter ends up deposited on the cell walls whilst clean exhaust gasses can exit.

What is regeneration?

Diesel particulate filters act as a soot trap. In order to prevent a build up of soot that would eventually block the filter and affect the running of the vehicle, they must be cleaned. This is done with either passive or active regeneration.

Passive regeneration occurs on long journeys once the exhaust temperature is high and the soot burns offnaturally. For vehicles that do not get this kind of use active regeneration is needed. Active regeneration occurswhen the level of soot in the filter builds up to a pre-determined level. At this point the ECU makes adjustmentsto the fuel injection and timing in order to increase the exhaust gas temperature. This increases temperatures in the DPF to the level where the accumulated soot is burnt away.

Some vehicles use a fuel additive to aid the regeneration process. This additive is added to the fuel tank everytime the vehicle filled with fuel. Additives are commonly used on vehicles which do not have room to locate theDPF close to the engine where temperatures are highest. The fuel borne catalyst lowers the temperature atwhich the soot particles trapped in the DPF ignite and burn off, allowing regeneration to take place at a lowertemperature than otherwise.

Why do filters become blocked?

During driving, soot settles on the cell walls of the filter and starts to clog the pores of the DPF. This results in alayer of soot accumulating on the filter surface. This is layer can be burnt off during regeneration, a closed-loopprocess initiated by the engine control unit. Regeneration requires exhaust temperatures in the DPF to bebetween 550°C and 650°C.

In short-journey or city driving diesel cars may only reach an exhaust temperatures of approx 200°C.Consequently regeneration does not take place, or the vehicle is parked before regeneration has completed.

If this process is repeated over a period of time, the soot build-up can reach a level where regeneration is notsufficient to clear the blockage and the resulting back-pressure causes a loss in vehicle performance. In thesecases the entire DPF unit must often be replaced.
