But who will wear such gar-ments? Who are the denizens of the Dirty New Age, the new grime syndicate?

We sent our muck-raking report-er out onto the streets to unearth the Icons of Dirt.

To our surprise, they spoke freely to us about their tarnished lives.

Either that or they reckon if they get into your pants you’ll give them the job. But it doesn’t work like that.

PASTRY CHEF☛ How did you choose your unusual job?A. I learned the basics at my dad’s bakery in

Brooklyn. One of my earliest memories is the smell of fresh bread.

☛How did you get from there to becoming one of the world’s top pastry chefs?

I wanted to push the envelope. I apprenticed with the best chefs in Paris. Soon I could make anything you wanted: macaroons as delicate as eggshells, the finest millefeuille.

☛It sounds very creative.I guess it looks pretty glamorous from

the outside. But it’s hot and sweaty. You get burned a lot. And you get covered in flour.

them you’re a kind of warrior, one of a tribe of rebels. But you choke on exhaust fumes and come home covered in unholy grime.

long it lasts before you burn out or sustain serious injury.

☛ Would you recommend your job to others?I like the freedom, but tarmac is a tough mistress.

☛ How did you break in to your career?I started off waiting tables, which was

basically a great way of getting insulted. Later I worked behind the bar. I started making cocktails as a way of attracting more girls to the place.

☛ That doesn’t sound too difficult.It was harder when people could still

smoke inside. My hair reeked at the end of the evening.

☛ So you enjoy your work more now?It’s still pretty stressful, especially on a

Saturday night. The orders come too fast. I’m dealing with sticky liquids. And I always cut my fingers peeling the lemon rind.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER☛There are a lot of beautiful girls around here – but

they’re all giving you dirty looks. Care to explain?It’s because I treat them like props, not people. I’m not sexist, but I have a job to do and I can’t get distracted.

☛Your clothes are covered in grime. Surely photography is a clean activity?

I like to get down on the ground when I shoot: classic Antonioni stuff. I experiment with weird angles, make the

girls look even taller than usual.

☛What’s dirtiest part of your job?The clothes! The best pieces from each season might

get shot by various magazines on four or five different girls, without being washed in

between. So by the time they get to us, they’re filthy. I’m glad I don’t

have to wear them.

☛Is your job usually as dirty as this?It often involves creating strange substances. Just the other

day I was asked to create a giant cobweb. And once there was a character who got sneezed on by a dinosaur.

☛Let me stop you there. Is there any upside to your job?

Sure. After this picture, my girlfriend dragged me off for a hot shower.

FITNESS TRAINER☛ Are you the fittest person you know?I know I look pretty good! But I can’t say the same for

most of my clients. If you had to put up with as many saggy, out-of-condition bodies as I do, you wouldn’t want my job.

☛ Do all your clients fancy you?Only the old ones, unfortunately.

☛ Is it hard, working out all day? Exhausting! I spend a good part of my life either sweating

or shouting.

☛ What’s your ambition for the future?This year I’ve decided to train only models, actors or

rock stars. But they have pretty unhealthy lives. And they’re messy, too. You should see their hotel rooms.

need to get muddy?I don’t spend all my time drawing.

I like to get out on the site right from the start. You’ll see me there when it’s just a wasteland or a ruined building. Then I make regular visits until the work is done.

☛ Are the construction workers nervous when you show up?

All the guys on the job know me; it’s like I’m one of them. My hands are as rough and calloused as theirs. Sometimes I think I should have been a bricklayer.

ACTION PAINTER☛You’re living proof that it’s possible to be dirty – and

a millionaire.I’ve come a long way, but it’s been a struggle. In the old

days I was just some young hobo covered in paint. Now people expect me to look this way.

☛How did you develop your technique?I used to be a realist painter, but I found it too constraining.

I began to splash paint at the end of each day to express my rage, my passion, my frustration. It became a technique.

☛Are the splashes entirely random?Not at all. There’s a rhythm to my work, like jazz.

☛Doesn’t it annoy you, being covered in paint all the time?

No, I find it sensual. I love getting paint all over me. I’m part of the painting – and the painting is part of me.

Dirty New Age: Th ese jeans bring together Diesel’s

experience in giving jeans the dirty touch. Th ey are identifi ed by a spe-

cial product tag, attached to the back pocket, in the form of a newspaper

clipping telling the story of dirty denim.

Cool of Coal: Th anks to special coal treatments,

wearers get the perfect “miner” look without spending a single day in a mine. All the Cool of Coal denim

comes with a special “smoked black” hang tag that describes the inspiration and technical features of the product.

Blue Eyecons: Each pair of jeans is hand-made in

Italy and treated over four days in a series of steps that mean no two pairs are alike. Th ey are identifi ed by the

Blue Rivet, a blue inner label and a tape attached on the inside of the fl y stat-ing the year and season of issue. Th ey

come in a vintage laundry bag complete with a history of this special denim.

Essentials: Th ese washes are Diesel’s interpreta-

tion of timeless classics you’ll want to wear every day. Th ey cover many diff er-ent styles of denim, from clean to treat-ed or destroyed. Every Essentials piece is identifi ed by a “Diesel denim team”

With these washes, Diesel once again underlines its commitment to delivery

denim artistry of the highest order

One theme, three diff erent variations. First the 8x9 treatment, known as Th e Miner’s Shadow, seen on the Krooley fi t. It’s made from black denim pushed to its limits. We take very rough black denim. Th en we apply resin to protect the original black fabric in selected areas. Th e pant is then heavily washed to make the black colour fade. After that we apply the 3D Evolution technique. Th e result is a totally new

colour made out of diff erent shades of grey.Th e 8W3 treatment is known as Layers

of Coal, available with the Tepphar cut. Blue stretch denim is washed with resin and black dye, which gives us a black fi ve pocket. But then the denim is sanded in order to unveil the blue colour lurking beneath the surface. Tell us that’s not a neat idea! Finally the denim is washed with a softener.

Last but not least is the Krooley 8V4 treatment, called Liquid Coal. Here we pour liquid colour randomly over the jeans. Th e denim is then washed. As the colour was not fi xed, it moves over the denim, creating the unique eff ect of black colour spots fading into blue colour.

DIRTY NEW AGE

COOL OF COAL

Shades of SandTh e denim goes through several stages of

washing and handcrafting, all undertaken in Italy, known in house as 8x2. Th e fi rst step we call the 3D Evolution: the denim is shaped to make it look as if it’s been worn for years. 3D Evolution is an upgrade of the traditional three-dimensional whiskers. Th e denim is covered in resin and then stressed to the point that the garment changes its shape: the legs are twisted and the fabric is wrinkled.

Next we apply the Natural Dirty eff ect, using natural elements like roots and grass. Th is guarantees a less homogeneous spread of

dirt, making each piece unique. Hand abrasions are carried out at diff erent stages of the washing process.

Th e 8NJ wash shares its key steps with the other Dirty New Age washes: 3D Evolution, Natural Dirty and Manual Abrasion. But the unique feature of this denim lies in the fabric. Th anks to a particular fabric fi nishing, the threads are coloured using two diff erent types of foam that penetrates the fabric and gives the wash its characteristic look.

Raw PaintExperienced via the Th anaz fi t, the raw

paint style (code-named 74K) is made in Italy by our “denim painters”. We kid you not. Most of the work is carried out on raw denim, with no washing. Some colour spots are manually painted in the fi nal stages, while others are embroidered into the denim. “Raw Paint” is made using a 14 oz denim that is also put through the 3D Evolution process. At the very last stage the denim is drummed to soften the fabric.

First up, the Koolter 8Y9 Turbodenim. Sounds cool, doesn’t it? And it should, because Turbodenim is the denim technology innovation of the year. A special “turbotech” fi nish speeds up the ageing process of the denim, which means that if you wear them at least 30 times without any washing, your jeans will become truly vintage. Th e more you wear them, the more patina you’ll see.

Next is the Narrot 73N. Its main features are the three dimensional whiskers made through a complex process involving a dedicated machine.

Th e denim has to go through at least 3 diff erent stages of work and one hour of drying.

Th e Larkee 8PI is a classic bastonato wash, a trademark Diesel denim treatment. Launched by Diesel in 2009, its most visible features are the vertical stripes in a lighter colour. Th e eff ect is obtained thanks to an extra stone wash and to the use of a secret device. Th at’s got you wondering, hasn’t it?

Th e Th avar 8B9 is a 12 ¼ oz dark indigo denim with visible slubs in the warp. Th e key

steps here include manual sandpapering, the use of a golden spray and a fi nal dirty bath.

Let’s fi nish with the Iakop 8W7, an 11 oz stretch denim with fl at fi nishing. Th e fl at fi nishing involves using a product in the fi nal stage of the weaving that cleans the fabric and gives the denim a brighter tone. Th en 8W7 undergoes a stone wash and a golden treatment.

With these washes, Diesel once again underlines its commitment to delivery denim artistry of the highest order.

Seen in combination with the Larkee cut, the 8NE wash responds to the rise of Tencel, a new natural fi ber made of wood pulp cellulose. Compared to cotton, Tencel, is softer, breathable and very comfortable to wear. Diesel is the fi rst brand to heavily treat the fabric while

protecting its unique properties. Th e denim is stone washed, bleached and manually abraded, but it remains as comfy as ever.

Th e next wash under this heading is the Darron 8x8 Blue Rock, a unique piece of vintage. Its name comes from the fact that

it undergoes fi ve hours of stonewashing at the beginning of the creative process. Th en there’s a golden brush step and a dirty spray treatment. Spas don’t treat human beings with this much care.
