On the first day of term at The Barlow RC High School, it wasn’t just the Year 7 students that were new to the school; many of the facilities were too. The high-specification science block opened its doors as the first phase of the Building Schools for the Future £11.2m renovation was completed.

With seven new labs, ICT learning area and two prep rooms, these facilities come in addition to a new drama and dance studio, sports hall, ICT suites and reception area. The renovation work will conclude in February 2012 with remodelled English, Maths, Design & Technology and Art departments.

Head Teacher Claire McCarron said,

Denton has been twinned with Montigny le Bretonneux, a town some 20 miles south west of Paris, and about 5 miles from Versailles, for 20 years. Various twinning events have been exchanged over the years This year the highlight for French visitors is to go to the Didsbury Beer Festival at St. Catherines Club on Saturday night Oct 29th.There will be approximately 25 French visitors from Montigny, who will be hosted by Denton/Audenshaw families. Whenever there is an opportunity for the French to be invited to an event which is typically English or regional in this part of the country

it is eagerly pursued. Beer Festivals definitely fall into this category, especially one that is as prestigious as the Didsbury Beer Festival. We know that our French visitors will particularly enjoy the DBF experience which on Saturday night will include the big band Swingin' Affair and the fantastic band Modern World whilst sampling some of the 130 plus finest ales and ciders in the country. Other organised activities for our French friends include a guided historical tour of Manchester city centre on Saturday morning, taking in Castlefield.Spinningfield, St Annes Square,Albert Square,

Peterloo and The Chinese Quarter.

The Didsbury Beer Festival has gone from strength to strength over the last three years and with an improved choice of ales, ciders, food and entertainment they expect a bigger attendance than last years 3600 who helped to raise £12,000 for Cornerstone Mission and St. Anne's Hospice. Entrance is available on the door, however there is a Friends of DBF special ticket which entitles entrance to ALL sessions. Fancy a great night out, with excellent music spun by renowned DJs in a friendly and intimate setting? For only a fiver! Then get down to Funk For The Soul - an uplifting evening to raise the roof, the spirits, and money for charity - at The Irish Club, High Lane, Chorlton on

Friday, 14th October. Legendary Manchester DJ Dave Haslam, together with local DJ Steve Sage and friend Matt Foster from Brighton, will be playing an eclectic mix of funky music from 8.30 - 1.00 am, with proceeds donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Lisa Howarth, organising the event, told me: “seven years ago, my mum, Eileen, started to develop early onset Alzheimer’s, and is now in Meadow Bank nursing home in Chorley. Losing my mum to such a horrible illness has been and remains an incredibly difficult time; but organising this night has been a positive thing for me, with a chance to honour my mum and raise some much needed money for the Society.”

Asked how she hit upon the idea of a music night, Lisa explained: “years ago, my mum set up a women’s night in Bolton to cater for her increasing number of friends who just wanted somewhere to get together in a safe and friendly environment. It started in a small space above a pub, and proved so popular that she relocated the night to Manchester – Dusty’s. Putting on an intimate, uplifting night seemed a fitting tribute to my mum, and I was thrilled when Dave Haslam and friends came on board. Everything, from the promotion to the Djs, has been provided for free, so much thanks to all those involved.”

Funk For The Soul starts at 8.30 p.m, on Friday 14th October. Admission is a very reasonable £5 on the door, so you might want to get there early. Anyone wishing to contact Lisa for further information can do so at [email protected] or on Facebook.

Fukushima falloutThis year’s earthquake off the northeastern coast of Japan, and the subsequent tsunami,

had a devastating effect on that country, including the highly-publicised damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. In the days and weeks following the earthquake, press coverage of the plant was intense, with many predicting a catastrophe - especially as some parts of the plant dated back to 1967.

Will the new political climate allow the expansion of nuclear power that would be required to meet demand? What if any are the barriers to long-term safety? Will scientists be able to convince a sceptical public of the merits of nuclear power over traditional or other ‘green’ technologies still in their infancy? Are politicians willing to discuss the scientific merits or otherwise

of nuclear power more openly, and help develop a balanced approach to political decision-making about energy?

Dr John Roberts, Dame Sue Ion and Rob Lyons will introduce a discussion about where the fallout from Fukushima leaves the future of nuclear energy, chaired by Tony Gilland.

Southern Cemetery has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award after three years of improvements and hard work.

Manchester City Council have worked closely with the Friends of Southern Cemetery and partners, such as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, to improve facilities and raise standards to be awarded the Green Flag – the UK’s benchmark standard for green spaces.

The flag was raised on Monday 5 September to celebrate Southern Cemeteries’ first ever Green Flag Award since the scheme was launched in 1996.

The work focused on creating and maintaining a clean and attractive cemetery that visitors and residents could enjoy, while giving residents the opportunity to have their say in the management of the space.

This included clean up operations

by members of the Friends Group and the local community, as well as a scheme to resurrect 4,000 headstones that were laid down due to safety concerns – providing work placement opportunities for local residents and resulted in permanent jobs for two apprentices.

The Southern Cemetery is one of the largest municipal cemeteries in Europe with more than 117,000 graves spanning 135 acres – including the graves of L S Lowry and Victorian philanthropist John Rylands, amongst others – and includes a number of historic buildings – five of which are Grade II listed.

The cemetery is also full of a surprising array of wildlife and bio-diversity that has been managed and protected as part of the improvement works. So much so that local schools are planning to visit the cemetery to take advantage of the rich

history and wealth of nature present in one of Manchester ‘s most valuable open spaces.

Each year more than 1,000 burials take place with ceremonies representing the diverse cultural make up of Manchester and the cemetery has taken care to provide facilities to accommodate all cultural needs.

Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “This Green Flag award has been much deserved after the hard work and improvements that the cemetery has enjoyed over the past few years. Apart from the tremendous clean up effort, the project has also found two apprentices full time work – which is just brilliant.

“Manchester has more Green Flag open spaces than any other council area in the country, a source of real pride for everyone – from volunteers to council workers – who works to keep them great.”

Matt Gallagher, Chair of the Friends of Southern Cemetery Group, said: “On behalf of the Friends Group I would like to say how appreciative we are for the hard work of the cemetery staff and residents whose effort has been vital in receiving the Green Flag award. We have enjoyed a superb relationship with the City Council staff throughout and hope this continues in the future.

Serves 4–6

50g/approx 11/2 oz margarine

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1 medium potato, peeled and diced

225g/approx 8oz mushrooms, sliced

1 tsp thyme

710ml/11/2 pints soya, nut or oat milk

Salt and pepper to taste

1. Melt the margarine in a saucepan.

2. Gently fry the onion until transparent.

3. Add the potato and mushrooms and cook, stirring for 2 minutes.

4. Add the remaining ingredients.

5. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat and put the lid on. Simmer for 20 minutes.

6. Allow to cool slightly, then blend until smooth.

7. Reheat gently before serving.

The last part of September brought with it that comforting change from summer to autumn with some lovely patches bright crispness amongst the wet and windy days. This time of year is a favourite for many people maybe because we have finally given up the slightly stressful weather-worry of summer (and if we will ever have one) and start to imagine fires and leaves and the cold romance of winter. In the meantime, our gardens continue to be quite lively through October – a month Christopher Lloyd loved so much that “Even writing a capital O at the start of its name is a pleasure”! There are still an abundance of flowering plants and now is a good time to divide hardy perennials and

move some ill-placed plants to a different position, making sure they are well bedded in, watered and mulched for their winter hibernation. Apart from the many flowering perennials still present in the garden we also start to see the autumn-flowering bulbs making their presence known – cyclamen, crocus and colchicum taking over from the wonderful Nerine bowdenii. Autumn flowering bulbs can be planted in the late spring – early summer period and if they don’t flower in the same year, give them a chance the following year. I put in a Shizostylis (Kaffir Lily) some years ago, that took a couple of years to make an entrance and now seems very happy to produce flowers as late as any bulb. Other bulbs

can be planted now for a spring show – Narcissus (Daffodils) and Allium are good ones to try but the latter definitely prefer a sunny spot and look great planted in number. Galanthus (Snowdrops) can also be planted now but seem to have a better success rate if planted ‘in the green’ after their flowering time during spring – no harm in giving it a go anyway. Tulips are a stalwart for the spring border and for pots but hang on a few weeks - the bulbs are better planted a little later (November) as any early growth could be damaged in a harsh winter.
