“Did You Know?” � The vision of the College of Dentistry is to be an invaluable resource to
Iowa and to influence the direction of dentistry in this country and around the world.
� About 80% of Iowa dentists are alumni from the College of Dentistry, delivering an estimated $800 million in dental care to Iowa’s citizens.
� An estimated 98% of Iowans are within a 30-minute drive of a practicing alumnus.
� There are over 90 full-time faculty and approximately 320 DDS students at the College. Over 200 adjunct faculty assist in carrying out the college’s mission.
� The College of Dentistry is the only dental school in the nation to offer advanced education in all dental specialties.
� The College received 933 applications for 80 slots for the 2014 entering class.
� Average GPA of the 2013 incoming class was 3.75.
� The College of Dentistry had almost 141,000 patient visits in 2012-2013.
� The College of Dentistry has 27 outreach programs that served 94 counties in 2012-2013.
� We are consistently among the leaders in total dollars from the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Involvement in integrated research programs across campus has led to collaborations in craniofacial genetics, developmental anomalies, immunology, cariology, bone and tissue engineering.
� Our student research program places Iowa as one of the top dental schools in number of presentations at annual international dental research meetings. Our research programs integrate critical thinking skills into the dental school curriculum.
� In the past three years, we have recruited more than 14 faculty with strong research experience in the areas of human genetics, biomaterials, immunology, translational science, and population research. Many of these are funded for their research programs.
� Collegiate alumni or former faculty have included one university president, several dental deans, three ADA trustees, and three ADEA presidents in recent years. In addition, 18 of 20 consecutive presidents of the Iowa Dental Association are alumni.
