Objective 13

The menstrual cycle is the periodic, cyclic discharge of blood, secretions, tissue and mucus from the mature female uterus in the absence of pregnancy

The ovarian cycle is the monthly cycle of follicle development, ovulation and corpus luteum formation in an ovary.

The Ovarian Cycle consists of three phases:

The follicular phase is the period of follicle growth from the first to the tenth day of the cycle

The ovulatory phase lasts from day 11 to day 14, and ends in ovulation

The luteal phase, days 14-28, is the period of corpus luteum activity.

Hormones involved in ovarian cycle: Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)

– Stimulates follicular growth Luteinizing hormone (LH)

– A sudden burst of LH is responsible for the completion of meiosis in the primary oocyte

Menstrual Cycle Regulation

Estrogen– Promotes oogenesis and follicle growth– Secondary sex characteristics

Progesterone– Promotes changes in cervical mucus– Important in pregnancy
