N THE following pages will be found an exposition of the now con
siderable vocabulary of Volapuk, which will aid En glish - speaking
people in acquiring a practical familiaritywith thisintern ational language, even though theymay be unacquain ted with any of the foreign languages in which dictionaries of Volapuk have previously been published . It is
hoped that thislittle bookmay prove to be an aid in the propagation of
this, the first, attemptatthe in troduction ofa common language which has metw ith any noteworthy degree ofsuccess. ForVolapuk hasobtained a footin g of itsown amon g the speakers of twen ty - one different tongues, and its adheren tsare n umbered by hundredsof thousands. The number of personswho now coun t Volapuk among their acquirements has in .
creased rapidly, in response to the felt wan t for somemeans of in ter
nation al commun ication which could be easily acquired , and which would expressthe same idea to the Swede and the African , to the German and
the C hinese, to the American a nd the Turk, which should be free from figuresof speech, and which should be logically accurate ; and all this is
claimed for Volapuk .
The propagation of this lan guage has recen tly received an impetus, due to the report to the Philological Society of London by A lexander J .
Ellis, Vice - presiden tof the Society, to whomhad been referred a propo sitiou for an international philological congressfor the purpose of perfect ing a un iversal language . He reports against such a con gress, for the reason that “there already existsa un iversal lan guage, Volapuk, which hasa large number of adheren tsin all countriesof the world , and which iscompletely elaborated in grammar and vocabulary . In another part of the same reporthe says All those who desire the insubstantiation of
that phantomof a un iversal language which hasfiitted before soman y mindsfromthe daysof the Tower of Babel, should, I think, add their
voicesto theman y thousandswho are ready to exclaimsom6: volapiik lon g liveVolapuk .
It isgenerally held that human language was, in itsinfancy , a Divine
gift toman , and that the lan guages of any period are evolutions from these giftsto supply the necessitiesof human thoughtat that period , and hence that the language of a people is noton ly independen tof the will of man , but that itisamere expression ofhisn ecessities, and thusan indica tion of the progress of themental developmen t of the people. Volaptlk ,
however, in apparen trefutation of this dictum, has evidently taken its
place among the languagesof the earth .
Thematerialsfromwhich thiswork hasbeen compiled are the diction
'
s; in Span ish ofDr . Iparraguirre ;
The published writings of themakersoftext- books of the language, and the highwaysand byways of the literature, have also been laid under con tribution , so that there is herein offered , beside the words which are
already in cluded in other dictionaries, a n umber of wordswhich have not
previously appeared in any printed vocabulary . It is believed that
every root- word in use in the lan guage is presen ted , and fromthese
can be easilymade any desired number of words, ifsuch are n ecessary at any time . It was ascertained by a person whomade the necessary cal culation that word - formsmight bemade froma single active in finitive.
The inven tor an nounced that the new lan guage was devised for edu
cated people, and the plan which he followed was to adopta list of those monosyllabic root-words which were known to the greatest number of
civilized persons, and then , by the use ofa systemof prefixesand suffixes notin use by any people tomeet the prejudicesof any nation or class, to denationalize the language, and provide a highly infiectional cosmopolitan language with a greatwealth of root-words; a language so easily acquired that the necessary atten tion for thispurpose becomesa pastime instead of
drudgery, a language which should be systematic and capable of express ing in unmistakable terms any shade ofmean ing of which the human mind iscapable .
English- speaking people are quite ungrateful when they voice a note
ofdisparagement or ofharsh criticismofVolapttk , for it isnot on ly nearly asmuch to their in terest to have this language adopted generally as it
would be to have the English language occupy that place, but it ismuch better for the whole world than En glish could be. fiefore me lies an
article in Volapttk On the n ecessity of isolating sick persons, ” written
by the Director of a large General Hospital in Vien na. This article provesbeyond the peradven ture of a doubt the adaptability of the lan
guage to scientific aswell ascommercial purposes, and completely refutes the criticismsof those who have alleged that itwas not so adaptable. It
all the irregularitiesof the En glish language could be represen ted by a
diagramwhich would show the relative departures fromthe cen tral idea or normof the language, Volapuk, if superposed ,
would be found to occupy a position very near the mean or norm, and the great con trast between itsregularities and the irregularities of the English would be apparen tat a glan ce. ButEn glish - speakin g people are more numerous than those using any other lan guage of civilization , and thuswe find that
the language wasoriginally constructed with an especial referen ce to their needs, and that it isbecomin gmore andmore assimilated to the English —so far as new roots are con cern ed . That the appearan ce of the lan
guage remindsa linguist of the German is due to the fact that Father
Schleyer isa German , and hasmost frequently given usthe equivalen t of German word - forms. In illustration of the fact that, whether consciously or n ot, the language has been built up in deferen ce to the millions of
E n glish - speaking people, it is sufficien t to say that when such famili arity with the grammatical forms has been acquired asto enable on e to readily isolate the root- syllable or syllables, mostof the wordsmet with would be recogn ized by an educated En glish - speaking person , either by
- the appearan ce of the word, or by the sound of the root, correctly pro n oun ced .
The plan of thisdictionary is somewhat different fromany of those
which have preceded it, and the changes weremade with a view to ia
creasing itsutility . The idea of placing corresponding portions of the
two vocabularieson the same page wasobtained fromthe Fren ch -English dictionary of Bellows. While it is not intended that thiswork shall take the place ofamanual of the language, itwas thought best to provide the tablesof the appendix in a formin which they might be carefully studied by themselves, to facilitate recogn ition ata glan ce of new words, and also to facilitate employment ofproperly con structed words. A n umber of ex pressionshave been rendered into English and given in these pageswhich toman ymightappear superfluousin awork of thischaracter, butthey are asfrequen tly used in some languages asman y of our american ismsare used by ourselves, and they will bemetwith frequently in foreign corres
ponden ce. In some few instan ces two formsof a word are given without commen t, asone wasthe formknown and recogn ized for some time and
the other one of recent adoption . It has frequently been the practice of the inven tor to use, asa derivative, an arbitrary word formobtained by the elision ofone ormore letters, sometimes of a characteristic syllable, froma regularly formed word, and it is open to question whether this should be encouraged , asin thismann er Volapuk isdeprived of on e of its greatest beauties, viz . , that of regular simplicity of construction .
Volaptlk is nota crudity—a toy — it provides a vocabulary sufficient
for the necessitiesofmostpeople . It isheld that this language isa better mediumthan any other for the expression ofhuman thought. The almost incredible precision of the lan guage, the great variety of its word - forms and their unequivocal sign ification furn ish the toolswith which themind may fashion sen ten ceswhich shall not on ly be intelligible to the immediate auditors, but be as distinctly and unmistakably intelligible to a person in the uttermost partsofthe earth, by whose in tellection the logogramwould be in terpreted in accordan ce with their in tellectual development. This boon tomankind isthe unselfish production ofone who it is hoped may live to feel the gratitude graven on the hearts ofthose who are to profitby his laborsand see it in the beautiful inscription in the Golden Book ”
of
humanity , upon whose pageshe has richly earn ed a place by his free - gift
to the world of this great victory of peace, forging a bond to link the
heartsof the sonsofmen into a grand chain of un ion . This work bid
fair to become the handmaid ofscience, and bear fromone worker to an
other the partlyc ompleted work until the perfect ashlar is ready for its place in the wall of the new Tower upon whichmanymay climb to the infin ity .
No one could bemore consciousof the short comin gsof thiswork than the author, to whomall errorsshould be ascribed, for, though several kind friendshave lenttheir aid in the difficult task of tracing through four lan
guages and often through obscure expressionseven these few words, the conversion of thisflexible inflectional language in to a comparatively inflex ible language of particleshasbeen done in themain by the author. To all
these friendsthe author desireshere to tender his heart felt acknowledg men ts, butmost ofall to C 01. C has. E . Sprague, Professor and Academi cian , represen tative of the Un ited Statesin the International Academy of Volaptlk , for hisgreat kindness in personally supervising these sheets as
they havepassed through the press, and for hisintelligently critical touches to the manuscript. The author will be truly grateful for voluntary criticismsand notesof errorswhichmay be sen thimin care of the pub
lisher.
