Kelley Hunt “The Beatiful Bones”. 88 Records / Mark Pucci 2014. La cantante, compositora y pianista Kelley Hunt vuelve de nuevo con un trabajo realmente soberbio y muchas cosas que contarnos. Son una docena de canciones compuestas bajo una visión y una perspectiva atractiva y contemporánea. La música es una muy buena combinación de rock, soul, down-home gospel, rhythm and blues y roots music, con unos arreglos que a Kelley le van como anillo al dedo. No cabe duda que toda esa música forma parte de su propio ADN, lo que hace inevitable que el álbum suene como algo intrínseco a su propia identidad vital. Para aquellos que no conozcan a Kelley Hunt decirles que en “The Beatiful Bones” podrán descubrir las magníficas texturas vocales y el fraseo generoso y amable de su piano. Por todo ello y mucho más que apreciar a lo largo de todo el álbum, uno no puede sustraerse al encanto de sus cualidades y virtudes que son muchas. Por si eso no fuera suficiente, Kelley se rodea de unos músicos que saben dar forma de una manera fácil y atractiva a todo éste interesante proyecto. Un bonito y agradable disco para escuchar en diferentes y lugares y momentos. MUY BUENO. Singer, songwriter and piano player Kelley Hunt comes back again with a really superb piece of work and many things to tell us. You will find twelve songs composed under an attractive and very contemporary perspective. The music perfectly combines rock, soul, down-home gospel, rhythm and blues and roots, with some good arrangements that fit in Kelley’s style like a glove. There is no doubt this music is part of her own DNA, which makes the album sound like something belonging to her own vital identity. For those who are not familiar with Kelley Hunt say “The Beatiful Bones” will make them discover the magnificent vocal nuances together with the generous gentle phrasing of her piano. All what I have said and many more things you will gradually discover, will not let you indifferent to the magic of her wide music qualities and lovely charm. If that was no enough, Kelley is surrounded by a bunch of musicians who know how to give shape to this interesting musical project on an easygoing attractive way. This is a nice and pleasant album to be savored in different places and times. VERY GOOD.

Carolyn Fe Blues Collective “Bad Taboo”. Self Production 2014. Finalmente acaba de aparecer el álbum tan esperado de esta singular vocalista canadiense llamada Carolyn Fe y que tanto estaban anhelando sus más acérrimos seguidores. “Bad Taboo” es la continuación de su anterior y popular disco, “Original Sin” e incluye la colaboración de Shun Kikuta en la canción que da titulo al álbum. Kikuta fue antiguo guitarrista de Koko Taylor y el mismo B.B. King le puso el sobrenombre de ‘El B.B. King de Asia’. En este disco Carolyn cuenta también con la colaboración de Guy Belanger a la armónica en las canciones “Life’s Just That Good” y “Hole Lotsa Trouble”. Para todos los que piensan que el blues es siempre lo mismo, les recomiendo la escucha detenida de este nuevo proyecto que nos trae Carolyn Fe que, con su música, llega hasta los límites del blues sin olvidar por ello las influencias del pasado y de la música más actual. Respaldando las magnificas cualidades vocales de esta intérprete se encuentran Rami Cassab guitarra, Tim Alleyne teclados, Oisin Little bajo y Dan Legault batería. ¡¡A disfrutar, queridos!! MUY BUENO. Finally it has been published the long awaited album by this unique Canadian singer

called Carolyn Fe. “Bad Taboo” will totally satisfy her most devoted fans, because it follows the same path than her previous and acclaimed album, “Original Sin”. For this new recording she has selected various deluxe collaborations like Shun Kikuta who plays in the song that gives title to the album. Kikuta was former guitarist of Koko Taylor’s band and B.B. King himself called him ‘the B.B. King of Asia’. Carolyn has also included Guy Bélanger on harmonica in the songs “Life’s Just That Good” and “Hole Lotsa Trouble”. For all those people who think the blues are always the same, I recommend them to listen carefully the music Carolyn Fe brings us, because she comes up to the limits of the blues without forgetting past and contemporary music influences. The magnificent Carolyn vocal qualities are perfectly supported by Rami Cassab guitar, Tim Alleyne keyboards, Oisin Little bass and Dan Legault drums. Enjoy it fellows!!. VERY GOOD.

Berdon Kirksaether & The Twang Bar Kings “Latenighters Under A Full Moon” Roller 2013. El guitarrista Berdon Kirksaether y su banda The Twang Bar Kings gozan de una excelente reputación en la escena del blues y del jazz noruego. Todos los integrantes de este grupo provienen de la escena musical noruega y están en activo desde los años cincuenta, por lo que no son unos recién llegados sino que poseen una dilatada carrera de más de cuarenta años. Este “Latenighters Under A Full Moon” se grabó en diversos países como Noruega, Alemania, Suecia y Finlandia. A pesar de ser un álbum totalmente instrumental donde la voz no tiene cabida, Berdon nos propone un viaje variado y diverso por las diferentes caras del blues y el jazz, imprimiendo en cada una de ellas un groove imaginativo y unos arreglos variados y atrevidos en cuanto a concepción y desarrollo. El blues instrumental no es para todos los gustos, primero y ante todo porque el blues no es un estilo instrumental propiamente dicho sino una música que tiene en la voz su principal virtud y forma de expresión. Por eso mi recomendación es que para escuchar y disfrutar de éste álbum hay que sentarse cómodamente, cerrar los ojos y dejar volar la imaginación hasta lugares insospechados. MUY BUENO. Guitar player Berdon Kirksaether and his band, The Twang Bar Kings, have reached an excellent reputation in Norwegian blues and jazz scenes. All the members of this group come from Norway and they have been active from the fifties, so they are not newcomers in music as they have a long career of more than forty years on their backs. “Latenighters Under A Full Moon” was recorded in various countries like Norway, Germany, Sweden and Finland. Although it is a totally instrumental album where voice has no place, Berdon suggests us a varied and diverse trip through the different faces of blues and jazz. He also gives to every song an imaginative groove and some daring varied arrangements in terms of design and development. Instrumental blues is not for all tastes, especially because the blues is not mainly an instrumental style on itself but a kind of music where the voice is the principal virtue and form of expression. This is why my suggestion is that, before you listen and enjoy this album, you should sit comfortably, close your eyes and let your imagination run to unexpected places. VERY GOOD.

Georg Schroeter & Marc Breitfelder “18. Dixieland Jubilee - Live” Gert K Nagel 2014. Un trabajo perfectamente medido y estructurado gracias a estos dos músicos, ambos virtuosos en sus respectivos instrumentos. Por una parte

tenemos al pianista Georg Schroeter cuyos dedos se deslizan por las teclas del piano con una enorme facilidad, fascinando y extasiando al oyente con su fraseo dinámico, suave y envolvente. Por otra parte tenemos al armonicista Marc Breitfelder que domina todos los recursos y la técnica del “Mississippi saxofón” como solamente unos pocos pueden hacerlo. Cuando se escucha a estos dos músicos interpretando juntos los blues, es más que probable que uno quede gratamente impresionado y fascinado por la dimensión y el potencial técnico que los dos poseen para hacer disfrutar al oyente de las cotas que llegan a alcanzar cuando unen sus fuerzas embarcados en un mismo proyecto común. Los sonidos y las armonías que consiguen plasmar están profundamente arraigadas en la tradición más clásica del blues, aunque su sonido tenga también toda la vistosidad y la depurada técnica del siglo XXI. MUY BUENO. A well measured good structured work by these two musicians, both masters in their respective instruments. On the one hand there is piano player Georg Schroeter whose fingers easily glide on the piano keys, fascinating and captivating listeners with his dynamic soft and wrapping phrasing. On the other hand, there is harmonica player Marc Breitfelder who deeply knows all resources and technique of “the Mississippi saxophone” that only a few have. When these two musicians play the blues together, they will surely impress and fascinate people with the huge dimension and technical potential both musicians have to satisfy listeners with the high level they can reach when they join forces to give us a common project. The sounds and harmonies they produce are deeply rooted in the most real blues tradition, although their sound is as technical and colorful as what is normally expected from twenty-first century artists. VERY GOOD.

Sky King “Morose Tales From The Left Coast” Sky King Music / Doug Deutsch 2013. “Morose Tales From The Left Coast” es el nuevo producto con el que nos saluda el grupo oriundo de San Fernando Valley ubicado en la baja California, Sky King. El disco es un proyecto nuevo y único en el mercado discográfico por las diferentes novedades que aporta en lo que podríamos definir como rock-pop-blues. Son trece temas originales envueltos en un diseño de portada inspirado en la ciencia ficción. En el interior del disco también vienen en hoja aparte las letras de todas las canciones. La banda está formada por el cantante y guitarrista Walter Morosko, el también guitarra Garth Farkas, el bajista Larry ‘Fuzzy’ Knight, el batería y percusionista Chris Ross y el teclista John ‘JT’ Thomas. Como invitados han intervenido Lee Thornberg trompeta y trombón de válvulas, Jimmy Z a los saxos, flauta y armónica, David Jackson acordeón y Wynne Paris al sarod. Como ya he dicho el disco es un devaneo sinfónico por un rock-pop-blues original, divertido y sofisticado interpretado con gracia y solvencia, que puede satisfacer a un determinado público abierto a novedosas tendencias sonoras. MUY BUENO. “Morose Tales From The Left Coast” is the new work of a band called Sky King, which come from San Fernando Valley in South California. The album is a new unique project in the record market, because it presents a quite different music development we could define as rock-pop-blues. Thirteen original songs wrapped in a cover design inspired in science fiction. Song lyrics are also included on a separate sheet of paper. As previously mentioned the cd is a symphonic dream of original rock-pop-blues, performed with a pleasant sophisticated style by a bunch of professional musicians, which will probably satisfy a specific audience open to innovative sound trends. Lucky Peterson “I’m Back Again”. Blues Boulevard 2014. Judge Kenneth Peterson, más conocido como Lucky Peterson, es un músico muy completo que canta, toca guitarra, batería y teclados. Lucky fue uno de esos niños prodigio que ya desde muy pequeño vivió la plenitud del blues ya que su padre James regentaba un club llamado ‘Governor’s Inn’, por lo que, con sólo siete ños, el pequeño Lucky ya tocaba en las jam sesions que allí se organizaban regularmente. A los dieciséis años entró a formar parte como teclista en la banda de Little Milton y poco más tarde empezó su andadura actuando bajo su propio nombre. En esta nueva entrega discográfica Lucky Peterson sigue la estela de sus anteriores trabajos ofreciéndonos un poco de blues, de soul y de funk, siempre con esa energía y esa fuerza que desprenden sus discos y actuaciones en directo, adquiriendo ahora algunos perfiles sonoros algo mas sofisticados que lo que hiciera en anteriores trabajos. MUY BUENO. Judge Kenneth Peterson, aka Lucky Peterson, is a very complete musician who sings, plays guitar, drums and keyboards. Lucky was one of those child prodigies and he fully lived the blues, as his father James ran a club called ‘Governor’s Inn’ so, when he was only seven years old, he already played regularly in the jam sessions that took place there. Aged sixteen he joined Little Milton’s band as keyboard player and later on he started to play under his own name. In this new album Lucky Peterson follows the path of his previous recordings, with some blues, soul and funk, always with the terrific energy and strength he gives both in his albums and live performances, which have now got a more sophisticated sound than in his previous albums. Corey Harris “Fulton Blues”. Blues Boulevard 2014. En este disco Corey vuelve de nuevo a las raíces del blues en todas sus variantes y facetas, alejándose de sus anteriores puntos de vista musicales anclados mas en la música africana de la que es un dedicado y profundo estudioso. El cantante y guitarrista Corey Harris nació en 1969 en Denver, Colorado, desde muy joven quedó profundamente impresionado por el blues del Delta del Mississippi siendo un reputado intérprete de dicho estilo. Tanto le gustaba la música de su pueblo que, gracias a esta afición, se puso a estudiar antropología iniciando un viaje por el Camerún después de graduarse. A su vuelta, Corey decidió instalarse una temporada en New Orleans cantando y tocando la guitarra, la trompeta y el kazoo por las calles de la ciudad. Harris pertenece a esa nueva generación del blues acústico que mezclan diferentes estilos y caras de la

música como ocurre con Eric Bibb o Alvin Youngblood Hart. Un disco que gustará tanto a los seguidores del Corey que investiga las fuentes de la música popular africana como a los más puristas degustadores del blues con raíces, donde el aficionado se reconocerá e identificará plenamente en muchos de los dieciséis cortes que contiene este “Fulton Blues”. With this new cd Corey Harris comes back to blues roots in all its facets and varieties, so he moves away from his previous musical points of view, much more anchored in African music he has deeply and fully studied. Singer and guitar player Corey Harris was born in 1969 in Denver, Colorado. Since he was a young boy he was deeply impressed by Mississippi Delta blues and he soon became a skillful player of that style. He really loved the music of his ancestors and this passion led him to study anthropology and travel to Cameroon after his graduation. Back in the USA, Corey decided to settle for some time in New Orleans singing and playing guitar, trumpet and kazoo at the city streets. Harris belongs to the new generation of the acoustic blues like Eric Bibb or Alvin Youngblood Hart who tastefully mix different music styles and faces. This is an album that will appeal both Corey’s fans who love him when he investigates the sources of the popular African music and the more purist tasters of roots blues. In fact, most blues lovers will recognize and fully identify themselves in many of the sixteen cuts included in “Fulton Blues”. GREAT.

Bobby Rush With Blinddog Smokin’ “Decisions”. Silver Talon 2014. Dos leyendas de la música del sur de los Estados Unidos han unido sus fuerzas y su talento en este álbum titulado “Decisions”. Por una parte el gran cantante, guitarrista, compositor y armonicista Bobby Rush y por otro, el patriarca de la música de New Orleans, el señor Mac Rebennack, “Dr. John”. Después de cincuenta años de amistad, juntos por vez primera han plasmado y hecho realidad un disco completo y realmente magnífico, que está también acompañado de un dvd que contiene un videoclip con la canción estrella, “Another Murder In New Orleans”, junto a algunas otras sorpresas que no voy a desvelar. El álbum incluye una colección impagable de temas que van desde el blues hasta el rhythm and blues de New Orleans, algo de ‘southern soul’ y también un poquito de ‘funky-blues’ sureño. Más de treinta músicos han colaborado a lo largo de este “Decisions” entre los que cabe mencionar a Billy Branch y Carl Weathersby. Todas las canciones son de primera magnitud y seguro que van a dejar una huella imborrable en todos cuantos escuchen este excelente álbum. IMPRESCINDIBLE. Two legendary southern musicians have joined forces and put in common their talent and skills on this album entitled “Decisions”. After fifty years of friendship, they are now playing together for the first time to produce a magnificent album, that also includes a dvd with a video clip of the hit “Another Murder In New Orleans”, together with some other surprises I will not say and hope you will discover when you get a copy. The album includes a priceless collection of songs, ranging from blues to New Orleans rhythm and blues, some southern soul and a little bit of funky-blues. More than thirty musicians have collaborated along “Decisions” like Billy Branch or Carl Weathersby. Lee Palmer “60 Clicks”. An On The Fly Music / Sarah French 2014. Es curioso que un cantante, guitarrista acústico y compositor, provisto de una calidad innegable y que lleva más de treinta años en el negocio musical, no haya tenido la oportunidad de grabar su primer disco hasta el pasado año 2013. Afortunadamente Lee Palmer vuelve ahora con un nuevo disco, ésta vez realizado en enero de 2014 en Toronto Ontario, Canadá, publicado hace unos pocos meses. “60 Clicks” contiene diez piezas de un maravilloso country, con buenas dosis de música americana y destacables pinceladas de blues. Lee hace gala de un especial y singular talento tanto en la composición como en la interpretación y arreglos. Lee Palmer está arropado por una serie de músicos de gran reputación en el área de Toronto, que poseen un extenso bagaje a sus espaldas, como son el contrabajista Alec Fraser, el guitarrista y armonicista Roly Platt, o el guitarrista slide Burke Carroll. Todos ellos nos fascinan con esta muestra definitiva de su buen hacer que nos ofrecen en éste interesante álbum, para deleite y disfrute de aquellos aficionados que gustan de saborear la verdadera esencia del folk, el blues y el country. It is quite surprising that a singer, songwriter and acoustic guitarist, gifted with a remarkable quality and more than thirty years in the music business, has not recorded his first album until year 2013. Fortunately Lee Palmer comes now back with a new album, this time recorded in January 2014 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, which has been published a few months ago. “60 Clicks” includes ten cuts of wonderful country music, with a good dose of Americana and deep touches of blues. Lee has got a special unique talent as song writer, arranger and performer. In this cd he is perfectly backed by some musicians who have got a great reputation in Toronto area, all them with a huge experience on their backs, like bass player Alec Fraser, guitar and harmonica player Roly Platt or slide guitar player Burke Carroll. All them fascinate us with the tasteful good work they present in this interesting album, which will surely delight and give joy to everyone who like to savor the true essence of folk, blues and country music. Steve Hill “Solo Recordings Volume 2”. No Label Records / Sarah French 2014. El compositor, cantante, guitarrista y uno de los músicos de blues más prolíficos del Canadá llamado Steve Hill, explora nuevamente los vericuetos y variados caminos de esta música con precisión y excelente criterio. En este nuevo trabajo que sigue a su anterior disco con el mismo título, Steve da muestra de un gran talento embarcándose en un proyecto personal donde hace gala de su ingenio y su preparación musical, interpretando todos los instrumentos y mostrando su conocimiento de la “roots music”. El disco incluye once canciones que contienen un poco de todo, desde y como dicen los americanos “heavy and hard hitting” hasta “deep and melodic tunes”. Steve Hill relata con pasión y emoción tanto sus composiciones, como los tres covers que ha seleccionado para el disco y que son “Hate To See You Go” de Little Walter, “I Want You To Love Me” de Muddy Waters y “Simple Things” de Ray Bonneville. Un disco magnífico a cargo de un músico muy apreciado en Canadá con una trayectoria dilatada entre la que cabe destacar su colaboración en escena con algunos de sus héroes como Ray Charles, B.B. Colleen Rennison “See The Sky About To Rain” Black Hen Music / Mark Pucci 2014. Si pasamos por el tamiz de nuestro colador de cocina un poquito de roots music, algo de Americana, un cincuenta por ciento de country y unas gotas de folk, el resultado será la música de la canadiense Colleen Rennison. Esta mujer tiene una voz gratificante, de gran sabor y muy amena de escuchar. Colleen pone emoción, equilibrio y sinceridad en una colección de doce canciones de algunos de sus intérpretes preferidos como Joni Mitchell. Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young o Bobbie Gentry entre otros autores. Para este proyecto Colleen Rennison no podía haber contado con mejor garantía que la colaboración del guitarrista Steve Dawson, quien ha producido, arreglado, interpretado y mezclado este álbum con mucho acierto, mejor criterio, y excelente gusto, que dan como resultado un disco inspirado con una música cálida, poética y envolvente. MUY BUENO. If we put in our kitchen strainer a little bit of roots music, some Americana, a fifty percent of country and a few drops of folk, the result will be a delicious music performed by Canadian artist Colleen Rennison. This woman has a rewarding very tasteful voice, which becomes very enjoyable to listen to it. Colleen has a lot of feeling, together with a good balanced sincere attitude, she gives us in a twelve songs collection that come from some of her favorite performers like Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson, Leonard Cohen, Neil Young or Bobbie Gentry among others. To round up this interesting project Colleen Rennison has found the priceless collaboration of guitar player Steve Dawson, who has produced, arranged, played and mixed this album with a clever taste and wisdom, which makes as a result a very inspired, warm, poetic and wrapping music. VERY GOOD.

Little Mike & The Tornadoes “All The Right Moves”. ELROB / Frank Roszak 2014. Vuelve de nuevo el neoyorkino cantante, pianista y sobre todo armonicista Michael Markowitz, más conocido como Little Mike, con un álbum trepidante y lleno de energía y sabor. Aquí nos encontramos con la banda original de Mike, o sea, The Tornadoes, quienes han vuelto a reorganizarse para dar de nuevo el fruto que ya habían cosechado en sus primeros tiempos, y que son Little Mike armónica y voz, la maravillosa guitarra de Tony O, verdadera garantía para interpretar blues de Chicago, Brad Vickers al bajo y Robert Piazza a la batería, a quienes se les ha unido el pianista Jim McKaba. El

disco incluye un total de trece temas compuestos todos por el propio Little Mike. Este nuevo trabajo es un compendio de blues en el más puro estilo de Chicago, del que Mike recoge el espíritu y la esencia de esta música y la refleja con la propiedad de la que siempre ha hecho gala, pues no podemos obviar que durante los años setenta, ochenta y noventa tanto Mike como el resto de los músicos estuvieron trabajando con Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton, Louis Myers, Hubert Sumlin y Pinetop Perkins, por lo que la influencia que todos ellos ejercieron en la música de Little Mike & The Tornadoes es muy grande. David Michael Miller “Poisons Sipped” Self Production / Frank Roszak 2014. Cantante, compositor y guitarrista afincado en Buffalo, David Michael Miller acaba de publicar su nuevo trabajo que contiene un total de doce canciones fuertemente impregnadas de roots gospel, soul, Americana y algunas gotas blueseras. David ha formado parte de diferentes grupos y bandas y, desde hace ya varios años, se pasea por la escena musical, donde ha ido ganando una más que buena y merecida reputación, tanto en los locales musicales donde actúa como en los diferentes medios especializados, donde siempre deja su impronta en la retina y el oído del público y la crítica. David Michael Miller está acompañado por el bajista Daric Bennett y por el batería Carlton Campbell, dos músicos que conocen bien su estilo y que cuanto menos resultan eficaces y competentes a la hora de dar tratamiento y testimonio a las composiciones del líder, Jim Ehinger está a los teclados y Jay Moynihan al saxo. Junto a ellos David realiza un excelente trabajo vocal y ejecuta bonitos solos de guitarra, solos que aplica con mesura e interpreta aplicadamente. MUY BUENO. David has been member of different bands and, for several years, he has been usually seen along the music scene, where he has been gaining a more than good and well-deserved reputation, both in clubs and venues he usually plays and in the different specialized media, always leaving his music mark to different audiences and reviewers. David Michael Miller is backed by bass player Daric Bennett and drummer Carlton Campbell, two effective able musicians who

know the leader’s style and enhance David’s own compositions, Jim Ehinger is on keyboards and Jay Moynihan on sax. With all them David does an excellent singing job, running beautiful vocal and guitar solos, he performs on a restrained good way. VERY GOOD.

Alastair Greene Band “Trouble At Your Door”. Eclecto Groove 2014. Blues y rock a partes iguales es la propuesta del espectacular cantante y guitarrista Alastair Greene que, junto con su banda, nos sumergen de lleno en una fantasía de colorido y pirotecnia musical efervescente y llena de dinamismo. Greene formó su primer trío de rock blues con miembros de la legendaria banda del sur de California, The Pontiax, aquellos que en su día acompañaban al cantante y armonicista Mitch Kashmar, quien curiosamente también pertenece al ‘rooster’ de la compañía Delta Groove. Desde el año 2002 Alastair Greene lleva cuatro discos publicados, uno de ellos grabado en directo. En este último trabajo Greene pone toda la carne en el asador y se vuelca en cuerpo y alma en su nuevo proyecto, contando por supuesto con la complicidad del resto de los músicos que intervienen en el mismo. El resultado es un álbum intenso, enérgico, riguroso y lleno de un ritmo más que contagioso, con excepción claro está de algún que otro tema lento, interpretados, eso si, con gran intensidad y enorme vocación por su trabajo. Blues and rock to equal parts is what brings us the splendid singer and guitar player Alastair Greene who, together with his band, plunges all listeners into fantastic, colourful and vibrant musical fireworks, full of a dynamic atmosphere. Greene formed his first blues rock trio with members of the legendary southern California band, The Pontiax, those ones that in the past used to back singer and harmonica player Mitch Kashmar, who curiously also belongs to the rooster of Delta Groove. Since 2002 Alastair Greene has four disks in the market, one them recorded live. In this last work, Greene puts all his passion and energy on, devoting all his soul in his new project, with the complicity of the rest of the musicians involved in the album. Para mí es siempre una gran satisfacción poder escuchar a The Mannish Boys y cada nuevo álbum de esta banda es algo que espero con impaciencia y expectación. The Mannish Boys nunca defraudan a todos los que amamos el blues de verdad, es decir, el blues con mayúsculas y en esta nueva ocasión tampoco lo han hecho. No cabe duda que todo ello se lo debemos a Randy Chortkoff que es el alma, fundador y, aunque no sea la cabeza visible del grupo, su trabajo, su tesón y su pasión por los blues pervive siempre a lo largo del tiempo y de las vicisitudes que puedan cruzarse en el camino de su vida. Dieciséis nuevas canciones a cual mejor interpretadas con pasión, intensidad, colorido y alegría dan forma a este “Wrapped Up And Ready”. Andy T – Nick Nixon Band “Livin’ It Up”. Delta Groove 2014. Un álbum dinámico, bien expuesto, interpretado con energía y buen hacer. El disco corre a cargo de dos músicos de alto calibre y muy cualificados en lo que a exponer el blues se refiere. Por un lado tenemos al fantástico guitarrista Andy T y por el otro al venerable cantante Nick Nixon que sabe como hacer las delicias de los aficionados con su cálida y distintiva voz. El dúo está respaldado por Sam Persons bajo, Larry Van Loon piano y Jim Kingler batería los que se suman como invitados Ron Jones saxos, Christian Dozzler armónica y piano y Anson Funderburgh guitarra. El disco es sumamente interesante y sus premisas musicales se encuentran en la mezcla de Texas blues, Memphis soul y rhythm and blues de New Orleans, todo ello pasado por el tamiz de estos músicos afincados en Dallas, lo que repercute en el sonido tejano del grupo. Son un total de trece temas, diez originales y tres ‘covers’ de T-Bone Walker que no dejarán a nadie indiferente ante el sonido, la presencia y el trato del repertorio donde todo suena brillante, compacto e impecable. MUY BUENO. A dynamic album, well developed, performed with energy and taste by two great and skilled musicians who really know to display a blues repertoire. On one hand we have the fantastic guitarist Andy T and on other hand there is venerable singer Nick Nixon who really knows how to delight fans with his warm and distinctive voice. The duo is backed by Sam Persons bass, Larry Van Loon piano and Jim Kingler drums plus the valuable guest musicians Ron Jones sax, Christian Dozzler harmonica and piano and Anson Funderburgh guitar. This is a very interesting album musically based in the mixture of Texas blues, Memphis soul and New Orleans rhythm & blues, all with the particular style these musicians who have settled in Dallas for quite a long time have gradually

got, which gives them an special Texas sound. Thirteen songs, ten own ones and three covers coming from T-Bone Walker that will not leave anyone indifferent about the sound, the presence and the treatment they give to all songs, that sound bright, compact and faultless. GREAT.

Pork Chop Willie “Love Is The Devil”. Self Production / Big Sister Productions 2014. Pork Chop Willie debuta en el mercado con este disco lleno de magia y buenos deseos, aportando una fragancia nueva y distinta, que consigue imprimir unos nuevos aires a la, en muchas ocasiones, vulgar industria discográfica pero, sobre todo, nos ilumina con una diáfana luz suave en el vasto panorama de la música americana con raíces. Todas las canciones están escritas por el cantante, armónica y guitarrista Bill Hammer, quien está acompañado por Melissa Tong violín y voz en todos los temas mas, junto a Kinney Kimbrough y Robin Gould baterías y los bajistas Eric Deaton y Tony Conniff. La música es una mezcla original donde se funden estilos diversos como el Mississippi Hill Country blues, la música Americana y evidentes influencias de rock, Alt-Country e incluso algunos aires de música clásica. Todo ello se funde en un compendio de canciones relajadas, alegres y llenas de groove. Un viaje más que interesante que nos lleva por un itinerario que va desde el presente, hasta el pasado, pero siempre con un sonido embriagador y atemporal. MUY BUENO. Pork Chop Willie makes his debut on the market with an album full of magic and good purposes, providing a new and different fragrance that gives a new air to the often tasteless music industry but, over all, enlightens us with a clear soft light over the extensive panorama of roots American music. All songs are singer, harmonica and guitarist Bill Hammer’s own compositions, who is backed by Melissa Tong violin and vocals in all songs, drummers Kinney Kimbrough and Robin Gould and bass players Eric Deaton and Tony Conniff. John Mayall “A Special Life”. Self Production / Resistencia 2014. Leyenda viva del blues y “Padre del Blues Británico” desde hace cinco décadas, John Mayall vuelve ahora con un nuevo disco, para deleitarnos con todo su bagaje musical rebosante de blues. A pesar de su edad, 81 años, su energía, su devoción y su pasión por la música no se ha visto todavía mermada y este “A Special Life” es una buena muestra de ello. El disco ha sido grabado en formato de cuarteto con John Mayall a la voz, piano, órgano, guitarra y armónica, el tejano Rocky Athas guitarra, Greg Rzab bajo y percusión, Jay Davenport batería y la colaboración del acordeonista y cantante C.J. Chenier, hijo del legendario músico de zydeco y cajún, Clifton Chenier. El disco suena soberbio, elegante, tranquilo, compacto y con ese sello tan inconfundible que Mayall imprime a su música. De las once composiciones que integran el disco ocho han sido compuestas por Mayall, Athas y Rzab y las tres restantes son de Clifton Chenier, Jimmy Rogers y Albert King. En suma, un álbum robusto, sobrio y ajeno a las modas que imperan en el mercado. Es solamente blues, pero me gusta. MUY BUENO. Blues living legend and from more than five decades

"Father of British Blues", John Mayall comes back with a new album to delight us with all his musical knowledge which, as ever, is completely full of blues. Despite his age, he is now 81 years old, his energy, devotion and passion for music has not yet diminished and this "A Special Life" is a good example. The album has been recorded by four musicians, with John Mayall on vocals, piano, organ, guitar and harmonica, Texas guitar player Rocky Athas, Greg Rzab bass and percussion, Jay Davenport drums and the special collaboration of accordionist and singer C.J. Chenier, son of the legendary zydeco and cajun musician Clifton Chenier. The whole recording has a superb, elegant, calm and compact sound with the distinctive stamp Mayall always gives to his music. Of the eleven compositions that have been included in the album, eight have been written by Mayall, Athas and Rzab, while the remaining three come from Clifton Chenier, Jimmy Rogers and Albert King. In short words, this is a strong, restrained album, alien to the prevailing fashion of actual market trends. It’s only blues, but i like it!. GREAT.

Los García “Grandes Fracasos Vol.1”. Cambaya 2014. Una magnífica muestra y exposición de lo que este grupo ofrece en sus directos. La banda tiene el suficiente material como para ir sacando álbumes regularmente y ahora acaban de materializar parte del archivo musical de que ellos disponen. Es por eso que han añadido al título del disco el clásico ‘Volumen 1’. Los García son un grupo que se fundó en Andalucía y, más exactamente, en Antequera provincia de Málaga durante el verano de 1979, con la idea de filtrar y fusionar estilos como el flamenco, el rock, el blues, el pop y algunas cosas más. Transcurridos 35 años desde su fundación Los García siguen dando guerra con su estilo personal, un estilo que, a pesar de los años transcurridos, apenas ha variado un ápice en su formato, contenido y esencia. Las doce canciones que aquí vais a encontrar son prácticamente las mismas que hacían cuando eran treinta años más jóvenes, aunque no por ello se puede decir que esté anticuada, o que haya pasado de moda, es simple y puro rock ‘n’ roll del que siempre gusta de escuchar. Como ellos mismos dicen lo único que han cambiado es el envoltorio. MUY BUENO. A magnificent exhibition of what this group offers in live shows. The band has enough material to regularly publish different albums. Now they bring us part of the music files they have gathered along the years. This is why they have added to the cd title the classic words 'Volume 1'. Los Garcia started his career in Andalucía, specifically in Antequera, Málaga, during the summer of 1979. Their main purpose was to merge different styles such as flamenco, rock, blues or pop among others. After 35 years since they began to play, Los García keep at ii with their personal own style that, in spite of the years, has barely changed in the exposure, content and substantial expression. The twelve songs you will find here are practically the same as they did when they were younger and thirty years ago, although this does not mean the music is out of date or old fashioned, it is simple and pure rock 'n' roll always likeable to be heard. As Los García themselves say, the only thing they have changed is the wrapping and not the content. VERY GOOD.

Tommy Numbers & The Wildcats “Every Now And Then”. Bossa Nova Beatnik Production 2014. Una divertida y curiosa experiencia la que nos presenta el líder de los Bossa Nova Beatniks, Tom Gould, quien se ha dejado llevar por su

alter ego, Tommy Numbers, para realizar un disco con una música totalmente diferente y ajena a la que hace habitualmente con su grupo, siempre en una línea mucho más underground. En este disco Tommy Numbers & The Wildcats rinden tributo y se marcan un homenaje a sus héroes de juventud como son Elvis Presley, Little Richard o Carl Perkins con canciones tan emblemáticas y vintage como “That’s All Right Mama”, “Slippin’ And Sliddin’”, “Just Because”, “Little Sister”, “Ruby Baby”, “Honey Don’t”, “Love Me”, “Bossa Nova Baby” y una estupenda versión de “Sixteen Tons”, una canción que fue número 1 del Billboard en 1955 en la voz de ‘Tennessee’ Ernie Ford y número 17 en el mismo año por el cantante Johnny Desmond. En España el tema triunfó en la voz de José Guardiola bajo el titulo de ‘Dieciséis Toneladas’. En definitiva, estamos ante un disco alegre, divertido pero, sobre todo, muy festivo, rítmico y contagioso. MUY BUENO. A fun and unusual experience that now brings us the leader of The Bossa Nova Beatniks.Tom Gould. Paul Lamb & The King Snakes “Hole In The Wall”. Secret 2014. El armonicista británico Paul Lamb acompañado de sus King Snakes nos regala su nuevo proyecto, que es una fresca y sugestiva combinación de material original y al mismo tiempo tradicional, de blues, rhythm and blues y roots rock interpretado todo con vigoroso groove y un acento cuidado y muy bien estudiado. Para realizar este álbum Paul Lamb se ha rodeado de Chad Strentz voz y guitarra, Rob Demick bajo y voz, su hijo Ryan guitarra y voz y Dino Coccia batería y voz. El álbum de este virtuoso armonicista presenta nueve canciones compuestas por él mismo junto a versiones de Smokey Robinson o Brownie McGhee. Desde clásicos del blues-rock y el r&b en canciones como “Jumpin’ Little Judy”, “Making A Chance” o “Why Down Low”, hasta el profundo y vigoroso soul de “Sometime Tomorrow”, los aires gospel que planean por “A Better Place To Be”, o incluso el swing que desprende la versión del tema de Gary Moore “Still Got The Blues For You”, se recoge en este disco donde la diversidad y la calidad se dan la mano gracias al talento innato de unos músicos que juntos conforman la banda Paul Lamb & The King Snakes. B.B. & The Blues Shacks “Businessmen”. Crosscut 2014. Por fin tenemos el tan esperado álbum de una de las bandas de blues más prestigiosas que existen en Alemania, B.B. & The Blues Shacks. La banda sigue en la brecha, después de que el pasado año cumplieran su veinticinco aniversario subidos en los escenarios de todo el país y también de toda Europa. Este disco es un fiel reflejo de esos intensos años transcurridos desde que decidieron dejarse llevar por su amor incondicional por esa música que tantos buenos recuerdos les han dejado a lo largo de su fructífera carrera y que, naturalmente son los blues. “Businessmen” fue grabado bajo la supervisión de Andreas Wingert en el Koka Studios de Viena, en Austria. Con la excepción de la canción “It Was A Dream” del cantante y guitarrista de blues de Chicago John Brim, el resto de las canciones han sido escritas por los dos hermanos Andreas y Michael Arlt. Este álbum muestra el entusiasmo que todos ellos demuestran todavía tener en lo más profundo de su alma y de su corazón, con esos blues y ese toque de soul que sale a borbotones de una música en la que se refleja la fascinación por un estilo que palpita en ellos como si de la vida misma se tratase. MUY BUENO. We finally have on hands the long awaited album by one of the most prestigious German blues bands, B.B. & The Blues Shacks. The band still keep at it, and last year they celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary always on stage and active around his country and all over Europe. This album perfectly reflects all those intense years that have been going on since the moment they decided to let themselves be carried by their unconditional love for this music that so many good memories have left them along their successful career, which is nothing but the blues. "Businessmen" was recorded under the excellent direction of Andreas Wingert at Koka Studios of Vienna in Austria. Apart from the song "It Was A Dream" coming from Chicago blues singer and guitar player John Brim, the other tracks have been written by brothers Michael and Andreas Arlt. This album shows the enthusiasm all these musicians still have for the blues and soul that comes from the deepest part of their souls and his hearts and is fiercely expressed on a music which reflects the fascination that beats in their blood as their own life. “Hot Lips” Page “Roll Roll Roll!”. El Toro Records 2009. Un álbum magistral con lo mejor del blues, swing, jump, jive y rhythm and blues en la carrera de este gran trompetista y cantante llamado Oran Thadeus “Hot Lips” Page, quien pudo haber llegado a hacer sombra del mismísimo Louis Armstrong, aunque desgraciadamente eso no fue así, debido en parte a la mala o nula gestión de su manager, un hombre que no supo llevar la carrera de este gran artista como se merecía. Además de ser un magnífico músico de sesión, pues no debemos olvidar que a lo largo de su carrera grabó con una larga lista de músicos y cantantes como Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox, Billie Holliday, Pete

Johnson, Artie Shaw (con quien registró para mi gusto una de las versiones mas bellas de la canción “St. James Infirmary”), Big Maybelle, Earl Bostic, Big Joe Turner, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson o Wynonie Harris entre otros, Page también fue un espléndido y ‘caliente’ trompetista, formando parte de las orquestas de Count Basie, de la del batería Lux Alexander y de la de Bennie Motten, amén de otras varias. “Hot Lips” también tuvo sus propios combos, grabando para infinidad de compañías como King, Columbia, Apollo, Continental, Bluebird, Decca, Savoy, RCA... En este imprescindible disco recopilatorio a cargo del sello El Toro Records se encuentran veintisiete canciones grabadas durante los años cuarenta y principios de los cincuenta, incluyendo bastante material inédito e incluso cantando a dúo con vocalistas como Little Sylvia o Mildred Anderson. Una gozada de álbum para disfrutar y deleitarse durante años y años. La única pega que tiene es el sonido de frito que se escucha de fondo en prácticamente todas las canciones. IMPRESCINDIBLE. For this essential compilation published by El Toro Records, they have selected twenty songs recorded during the late forties and early fifties, including a good number of previously unissued material and even some curiosities like his duo singing Little Sylvia or Mildred Anderson. This is a delightful album to enjoy and calmly savour for years and years. The only objection is the background crackling noise that can be heard in practically all songs. ESSENTIAL.
