“Dice”

Below, we present a very simple group work game for relatively small teams (max. 10 people)

Requirements:

- time: 1.5 hrs

- minimum two teams with two participants each

- tutor/ observer

- set of 4 dice, one per each team

Course of the game:

1. In teams, the participants throw dice until either team will score an amount equal to 100 points. You can both add and subtract, divide and multiply. If the teams fail to achieve the equal final score, it can be assumed that the winning team is the first to exceed the target score.

2. Eventually, one assess which team was faster and why.

The game’s objective:

To win (achieving the score: 100). To identify the group’s working strategy. To name the roles within the group.

Tutor’s task:

1. To write down the individual results of each participant (e.g. on a flipchart or a sheet of paper).

2. To define the general outcome and strategy.

The task assessing the course of the game:

1. In summary, each team should be asked the following questions:

a) What kind of strategy was adopted by the team?

b) What difficulties did the team meet while pursuing the objective?

c) What kind of emotions did the team members experience while achieving (or not) the final result?

d) Who emerged as a leader during the game?

e) Has the fact of having a leader in the group proven helpful/ distracting in winning?

2. Game’s added value:

a) What are the important elements of a group work?

b) What can be done in order to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of group work?

c) What makes the process of identifying the task’s key mission/ objective so time-consuming?

Adding is a great form of warming-up before the proper activities aimed to improve the unity and cooperation in teams that are exposed to a significant stress or heavy workload at small time intervals. The best solution possible is to have a new, fresh team, i.e. one consisting of people who do not know each other well yet.
