Diaspora Development Assistant Background:

Ashoka is the global association of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs—men and women with system

changing solutions for the world’s most urgent social problems. Social entrepreneurs are individuals with

innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. From its regional office in Cairo, Ashoka

Arab World creates a competitive, entrepreneurial, and globally integrated citizen sector and develops the

profession of social entrepreneurship. Ashoka currently works with 78 Ashoka Fellows located in Egypt,

a. Research all prospect donors and include full profile at beginning of relationship tracking

document (see Specific Task 5). Research could include but is not limited by philanthropic

and business interests, backgrounds, likes, etc

b. Write all required funding proposals (graphics, narrative, budgets)

c. Develop all required engagement strategies. This includes Diaspora prospect/donor

identification, mapping and profiling, strategy creation and implementation

2. Manage carefully and responsibly, Ashoka’s Arab World current relationships with

Diaspora prospects, donors and partners

a. Prepare all due reports for Diaspora prospects, donors and partners as required. This

includes narrative, graphics, and financial reports

b. Create a report tracking system with updated information on pending reports and

submitted reports

c. Follow-up with current Diaspora prospects, donors and partners’ requests as needed

3. Coordinate the Global Diaspora Leader/ Regional Director trips, especially those

related to the Diaspora Initiative

a. Research potential prospects.

b. Draft letters to reach out to prospects and set up meetings.

c. Set up meetings and follow-up with schedule in collaboration with the Executive Assistant.

d. Create appropriate promotional and marketing materials, tailored to the audiences the

Regional Director will be meeting, in collaboration with the Media and Marketing Assistant.

e. Create all appropriate information packages for meetings, in collaboration with the

Executive Assistant.

4. Design new phase of Ashoka Diaspora social media

a. Research Ethnic media, create a list of Ethnic media partners b. Coordinate, create and revise the production of material (articles, photo-essays, interviews,

op-eds, videos etc.) to share with ethnic media partners, in collaboration with the Regional

Director, the Executive Assistant and other members of staff.

c. Create and moderate Diaspora related material for Ashoka’s social media outlets: the blog,

Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.

d. Identify and activate additional use of internet-based media and marketing tools

e. Prepare quarterly email newsletters and send to Ashoka Diaspora network and contacts

5. Develop knowledge management systems for Ashoka’s Arab World Diaspora

fundraising efforts

a. Organize, update and create files of Ashoka’s Arab World Diaspora prospect and donor

history and current activities. This includes creating a list and relationship tracking

document of all past and current Arab World Diaspora prospects and donors with a

timeline of communication history, grant purpose, grant amount, funding cycles, and reports

already submitted and to be submitted by Ashoka (soft and hard copies).

6. Diaspora correspondence and internal matters:

a. Type and send out specific Diaspora correspondence to appropriate internal and external

audiences, as requested by the Regional Director.

b. Under the supervision of the Executive Assistant and in support to the Regional Director as

the Diaspora Global Leader, coordinate and follow-up on all internal requests and

correspondence related to Diaspora strategy, between the RD and Ashoka Global, other

Ashoka country offices, and the staff of the office.

7. Diaspora meetings and events:

a. Lead and be the focal point for planning, organization, and execution of Ashoka Diaspora

events

b. Lead or provide support to other fundraising events, as needed

c. Assist the RD and Development Officer to setup meetings related to the Diaspora

Initiative

d. Take notes on and provide proper follow up with action items after all Diaspora meetings

of the RD

8. Diaspora Filing:

a. Organize the Diaspora files in hard and soft copies.

9. Support fundraising efforts of the Development Officer for Ashoka Arab World

a. Contribute to the creation and assist with the implementation of new Development

outreach ideas

b. Support preparation for development trips – research, outreach, proposal writing,

scheduling, follow up

c. When needed, prepare for and attend development meetings with potential partners/donors

10. Support managing relationships with current Partners and Donors

a. Support maintaining ongoing relationship with the Partner/Donor

b. Help in creative engagement and development of collaboration between AAW and

Partner/Donor

c. Support on-time, quality reporting and regular communication with Partners/Donors.

d. Draft responses to requests for information

11. Perform any other tasks assigned by the Regional Director and Development Officer.

Performance management

i. Together with her/his supervisor, the staff member will develop an annual plan of action. This

plan will be created at the beginning of the year and updated on a monthly basis.

ii. Together with her/his supervisor, and based on the annual plan of action, the staff member

will develop a performance agreement at the beginning of her/his term. This agreement will

include goals, measures and expected results and will be the baseline for the performance

review to take place after the first six months and the end of the year. It is the staff member’s

responsibility to follow-up with the performance agreement and review.

iii. The performance agreement will include monthly workplans with all activities to be executed

during the month.

iv. The staff member will keep a weekly time-sheet of activities undertaken to serve as a

reference and must be made available to the Operations Manager, the Development Officer

or the Regional Director upon request.

v. The staff member will send a monthly report with all activities executed during the month; to

be sent to Operations Manager, Financial Manager and Regional Director on the 25th of each

month.

Qualifications:

Education: B.A. in a relevant field

Experience: 2 years of relevant field experience is required

Language: Native fluency in written and spoken English

Proficiency in written and spoken Arabic a plus

Required Skills:

Excellent writing and research skills.

Excellent communication (written and oral) skills.

Fundraising skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft applications including Word, Excel, Power Point. Proficiency in Adobe

Photoshop is an asset.

Strong conceptual and analytical skills.

Excellent organization and problem-solving skills.

Ability to multitask.

Great attention to detail and design is a must.

Experience in producing promotional and marketing materials is a plus.

Applicant must be willing to work in the office 70% of the time, and in the field 30% of the time.

We work normal office hours (9 a.m. until 5 p.m., five days a week) 50-60% of the time.

We work until 6 or 7 p.m. at least 20 % of the time.

During major events, we work until 8 or 9 p.m. (25 % of the time)

Sometimes, we work during holidays, if necessary. (10% of the time)

After three years of work at AAW, staff members can apply to other Ashoka jobs in the region or

abroad
