    A bright pleasant day.

    More calling this year than in several past years.2The "Hooks"3out in two "four-horse rigs"

    Negro footmen &c. Great style.

    Carrie4received calls with Nell5and Lodice6at Nell's home, Carrie wore her light silk with white

    tulle barb,and Jacqueminot roses. (I was all the morning making the barb) They sent out cards

    and received from one till "four." (cream and cake, all the boys left three cards apiece) at half-

    past-four, they went on a ride to Ft. Edward (Lodice and Charley Hopkins,7Nell and Charley

    Dix,8Julia Parks9and Fred Benson Carrie and Paul Dakin in a five seated sleigh they came back

    at 8.P.M. to a hot supper at Charley H's to which Gertie10and Herbert, Arthur and Susie

    Underwood11were invited. Willie12went on a ride to Ft. Edward with a lot of the boys his age

    home at 8,30. Gertie riding all the afternoon with Susie Underwood in their two seated sleigh

    also Fannie Conkling and Lena Johnson.13

    January 2ndThursday

    Snowing heavily all day. wind blowing all the evening. Took Gertie dress up to Miss

    OConnor's for her to finish for the party. At eight they went Carrie Gert and Will to Susie

    Underwood's party. Gertie wore her navy blue and tea rose-buds, she rode down with Helen

    Finch. Carrie wore her light silk went down with Will to Lodice Nell was there & they all went

    over together. There was 20 couples. they had dancing it was a very pleasant affair. Paul Dakin

    escorted Carrie home Charley Dix, Gertie.

    January 8thWednesday

    In the morning Carrie & I went out shopping went up in Peck's Hall to see the Christmas tree

    saw Gert Krum15and Sate16going up to our house went up to see what was wanted Sate came to

    invite me & Carrie to her party. Friday evening. Nell Coffin is to have one tomorrow evening.

    Mamma consented to let the girls have new dresses. So we went right to work at it and by 3 P.M

    Miss O'connor commenced them Carrie's will not be done. but Gertie's will. Carrie's is Dotted

    Muslin over light pink [satin?] Gertie dotted muslin over light blue.

    Mrs. Harris here nearly all the afternoon she is getting crasy again. Carrie Lodice & Nell went

    riding with the Underwoods to Sandy Hill. got home just before supper at 7.00 Lodice came up

    and we went to the Christmas tree All of my Class received a present a five-cent-box of note

    paper. Marcia,17Gertie Cadwell,18Anna Dix19Mary Price20and Self, very funny, it is nearly a

    Jan. 13thMonday

    Received a Notice from Bertha McEchron25the Secretary of a Special Meeting of the [N.Y.B?]'s

    to be held at Gert Krum's to night. Sate came up a few minutes at door, went to the meeting,

    lovely time, voted in Lucy Smith.26Mary Price and the Doll baby

    tried the key experiment. Some waltzing

    Jan. 14thTuesday

    Home all day feel anything but well went to bed sick took two pills and a bowl of Ginger tea.

    Carrie sick with toothache and swelled face.

    Jan. 15thWednesday

    Woke up feeling worse didnot get up at all. sorethroat

    Jan. 16thThursday

    Put on my wrapper and came down stairs about nine, found my throat was cankered took a dose

    of "black draught" gargled vinegar and water then tried kerosene. After dinner had the Doctor

    (Ferguson)27he touched the canker with Nitrate of Silver and gave me two gargles one of

    potassic and the other have iron in it, also gave me Aconite for a "Sweat", after he left went to

    bed in Mothers bed.

    Jan. 17thFriday

    Felt much better in the morning. just before supper sat up a while. about nine taken with awful

    pain on account of M.S. a long time before I was easy.

    Jan. 18thSaturday

    Sat up some, In the evening Miss James the H.I.H. called she said they had had a letter from

    Nate [Parris?].

    Received a card announcing the death of Judge James B. McKean and a Salt-Lake City paper

    containing the account of his obsequies. directed in Cousin Kate's hand writing.28

    Sat up nearly all day.

    Jan. 20thMonday

    After dinner put on my black cashmere Gertie Krum up to see me in the early part of the

    afternoon Sate in later, we expected Miss Jane to tea but she didnot come, Lodice stay to tea and

    the evening Miss Jane and Jennie Bradley came about seven stayed the evening very pleasant.

    Jennie Haviland29came home yesterday she has been gone three months came in to see me this

    afternoon.

    Mamma sick the same as I was sorethroat

    Mamma in bed. wrote to Grace Curtis

    Jan. 24thFriday

    had the Doctor. Attending to Mamma all the time have not been out yet. The Childrens Club

    meet tonight at Jennie Wait's30Will's elected a member, also Susie Underwood.

    Mamma a little better. Jennie H

    in to see me. In the Troy times tonight a notice of the sudden

    death of Cousin Kate. terrible news, it does not seem possible.

    Didnot go to church Mamma sitting up today for the first.

    A new day, didnot go out, wrote a long letter to Aunt Mate.31Mary O'leary carried the little

    black Cat away never to return. in spite of all instructions she has proved incorrigible

    Jan. 28thTuesday

    A warm lovely day. just as I finished began to dress Mrs Harris came and asked me to stay with

    Laura32this afternoon went down and stayed till 4.30 then went to Sate's for a few minutes.

    Jan. 29thWednesday

    Very much colder. Received a paper from Saratoga containing Cousin Kate McKean's obituary.

    After dinner wrote to Cousin Celia Record33then went up to Jennie Haviland's she was not at

    home stayed a few minutes with her Mother. After Supper we three went down to Nell's for an

    hour or so waltzing

    Jan. 30thThursday

    Presbyterian Organ concert tonight Aunt Mary34went, Played dominoes also Papa and Mamma

    as usual, dominoes are the regular thing with us nowadays.

    Jan. 31stFriday

    Julia Parks' party tonight After dinner. Carrie and I went up to "Snap's" after flowers, could not

    all as we wished The Jennie H. and I went up to Crandall mid afternoon Gert Cadwell called but

    I was out. Carrie and Gertie wore their new dresses for the first together. gert had rosebuds and

    Carrie [Red?] leaves Arthur Underwood escorted Carrie, he sent her flowers which she wore on

    her fan, Charley Dix escorted Gertie. Nell and Lodice and their escorts came here and all went

    together, Will went but didnot affect a young lady. It was a large party 70 invited nearly all their,

    six sets dancing all the while. home at 2. Our children had a delightful time

    Mending up Black dress. Gertie went riding with Jennie Conkling. she took Susie Underwood

    also. Jennie Haviland came for me, I could not go, Gert Krum down to Sate's to the Club

    Meeting all there but Anna Streeter35Lucy Smith and Belle Wilson, delightful time, read

    Homer's Iliad had a half-hour's waltz home at 10.15

    Feb. 2ndSunday

    Carrie sick for fear she is going to have a sorethroat. Went to evening service

    read Harper's for February.

    Feb 3rdMonday

    Wrote to Aunt Libbie.36Matted some Republicans. Went down to Lodice's after the Last

    Atlantic, saw jennie for a few minutes, went over to Libbie's a little while before tea, After

    supper played dominoes. herbert & Arthur Underwood called. Arthur asked Carrie to go with

    him on a ride to Lake next Wednesday evening. Charley Dix came and invited Gert for the same.

    Feb 4thTuesday

    After Dinner dressed went shopping bought tull vail went down to Laura's Parsons and Gertie

    Krum's. going to the Lecture with Gert, Gert, Ranger, went by invitation to to Susie Underwood's

    to tea and went to the Lecture from there. a Mr McKean (Judge James B. McKean's brother)

    lectured subjct "American Ideas". Will went to "The Octroon" played in the Opera House by a

    Amateur Ft Edward troupe.37

    Mrs Brainard called in the morning.

    After dinner went up to Jennie Haviland stayed an hour and a half. at 3:40, the children started

    for the Lake38Carrie & Arthur Gertie and Charley Lodice and Charley H, Nell, and Herbert,

    went to an entertainment at the Court House, home at twelve. Mamma, Papa, 39Will and I played

    Dominoes. Ice cream about a quart Mamma made for Papa Gert got one of the pictures of her

    society the other is not done

    Feb. 6thThursday

    "Hughes Gaurds40drill tonight in the Opera House Citizen's Corps from Saratoga, about thirty

    men Dominoes in the evening.

    Feb. 7thFriday

    Sewing. just after dinner Sate came up for a while. Went to Evening service, Carrie Willie &

    Gert went to their Club meeting at Lodice's

    Feb. 8thSaturday

    A bright lovely day. sewing in the morning about two. Nell came with Lodice after Carrie to go

    riding they went to Sandy Hill. a short time. (5 minutes) Jennie came for me we also went to

    Sandy Hill, coming back met John Parry for the first time since we were introduced. didn't

    recognize him. home at 5, After tea Will & Lodice came up played euchre all the evening Gertie

    up to Jennie Wait's Charley Dix came after her to take a ride, about 7.30, went up to Jennie's and

    took them both.

    Feb. 9thSunday

    Carrie and I went to morning service, Afterwards Read Anthony Trollope's "An Eye for an

    Eye"41None of us went out to church in the evening

    Feb. 10thMonday

    Jennie came down in the morning said she would go. after dinner went shopping. down to

    Parson's to show Mrs P- Cousin Kate's Obituary Jennie came down at 7.30 and at 8. we went up

    to Mrs Crandell Our sewing society had a 'sociable' there. Conversation, Music, Ice cream &

    cake all the amusements. Nevertheless we had a very good time, Walter Dix42escorted us home.

    &c the Young Gentlemen were not so numerous as the ladies. A large attendance of Elderly

    people a number from other Churches, they made $43,

    Feb 11thTuesday

    First snow then rain very disagreeable, I went out to the stores just before supper. received a

    letter from Dottie Wyckoff telling of Alice's death. Refused an invitation from Ed Trap, to a

    surprise party for Mary, the idea of asking me, I suppose we have to thank Aunt Mary's having

    Ann Richard staying with her for that

    Feb. 12thWednesday

    A bright but windy day. Read "Children of the Abbey",43Herbert and Charley came up about

    4.P.M. and Carrie & Gert went down to Lodice's with them. Sate came up a short while. played

    dominoes.

    Feb. 13thThursday

    Very cold. Jennie came after me at 2:00 to ride, were out just an hour. Lodice & Nell up,

    Lodice's Grandmother left for New York this Morning. to spend the remainder of the Winter

    Lodice is to stay with Nell. Gert Krum and Sate up in the Afternoon. At 6:45 I went down to

    Sate's and we three girls went with Miss Chapin to the Presbyterian church, there is a union

    revival of the Pres. Methodist and Baptist churches. Will had a tooth pulled, an immense one,

    Feb. 14thFriday

    A pleasant day. Received a letter from Sarah Yandell.44Mrs Colvin45called in the afternoon,

    Sate up in the morning. At three o'clock Nell's father took, Nell, Lodice, Kate Thomas, Julia

    Parks Jennie Susie Gert & Carrie, up to Long Pond. for a short hour's skating, in his three-seated

    Rig. Charley Dix brought Paul Dakin up in his Cutter & the Underwoods came also. home about

    5:45, Arthur brought Carrie home in the Cutter Herbert went in the [had?] also Dakin and Lodice

    rode home with Charley Dix. At seven they all went to their Club Meeting at Willis Haviland

    they went down in a farm rig, home at 11.15. Papa Mamma & I played Dominoes.

    Feb. 15thSaturday

    a bright day but very much cold. Late up in the morning, working all day getting ready for the

    Carrie's Company. she had Nell Lodice Jennie & Susie to spend the afternoon and Herbert

    Arthur Charley H, and Charley Dix to tea with them and spend the evening eleven to the table

    everything passed off nicely. Men. "Coffee, bread, cold turkey, crab-apple-Jell, Lobster stewed

    potatoes, pickles. Cocoa-nut cake, Jelly-cake & Raisin cake in basket, oranges cut up. butter of

    course. at 7.45 went to Gert. Cadwell's. Mary Price, acted as president, [written above: read some

    more in the Iliad] Gert. Krum Bertha McEchron, Anna Streeter, Nan Cheney, and Belle Wilson

    were all absent. had a very nice time, a Miss Philly a friend of Mary Price's was there, home at

    halfpast nine. made me a new tie out of an old one

    Feb. 16thSunday

    Sick all day. had a terrible time. in the latter part of the afternoon, slept down-stairs. Carrie has

    more cold. Yesterday Papa had a present of some venison from Mr Nelson Cheney.

    Feb. 17thMonday

    Wrote to Dottie Wyckoff. Papa wrote a letter to Eddie McKean.46Sate came up stayed quite a

    while, After supper played dominoes. Read Harper's for March Like the story, Young Mrs

    Pardine.

    Feb. 18thTuesday

    Snowing nearly all day. Received a long letter from Aunt Libbie, and one from 'Ned" Mason,

    with an invita= for our family from his father & mother to their silver-wedding. Scribners & St.

    Nicholas here for March. an article about a Camp Manhattan at Lake George47

    Do not feel well have not been out since Saturday night, Nell & Lodice up. played dominoes.

    Feb. 19thWednesday

    Recieved the notice from Salt Lake City of Cousin Kate's death. after dinner Jennie came after

    me and we took a long drive to Ft Edward Sandy Hill &c home at a quarter of five just after I

    came home Nell & Lodice came after Carrie and took her an hour's ride. after tea played

    dominoes

    Feb. 20thThursday

    Snowing nearly all day. Mary O'leary home her Mother is sick abed. Carrie and I doing the

    work. she is coming back tomorrow. Aunt Mary "rowing" it she wants to settle Father "told her

    what was what" all Ann Richards, she sets up Aunt Mary

    after tea played dominoes

    Feb. 21stFriday

    After dinner Jennie came after me and we had a delightful ride from 200 till 4,00. Miss "Cashier"

    Wait called upon Mamma, After tea Nell & Lodice came up and went with Carrie and I, to

    evening service. Gertie stayed all night Jennie Wait.

    Feb. 22ndSaturday

    After dinner while I was taking my bath Jennie came stayed a little while wanted me to go to

    church, the Revival still going on, went down to Sate's for a few minutes, opened our

    subscription at the Academy Library. Took "Cecil Dreeme" by Theodore Winthorpe,48Carrie

    went riding with Herbert & Arthur. they took Nell. also. After tea played dominoes

    Feb. 23rdSunday

    Carrie and I went to morning service awfully long sermon, didnot go to evening service. Gertie

    went to Elmer Amer's49funeral at the Baptist Church.

    Feb. 24thMonday

    Wrote to 'Ned' Mason. Carrie wrote to Fred Scott. carrie went down to Nell to Supper. they came

    up after her. After tea I went down to Sate's and we all went to church, hum!

    Feb. 25thTuesday

    Aunt Mary came in to Supper for the first Meal since she wanted to settle. After tea played

    dominoes.

    Feb. 26thWednesday

    Rain all day. Ash Wednesday Carrie & I went to morning service. Lodice came up and went with

    up, After dinner wrote to Aunt Mate, mailed it went down to see Laura, and took "Cecil Dreeme"

    down to Sate's. After tea played dominoes.

    Feb. 27thThursday

    Swept my room, Gert Krum up in the Morning, Sate up also, brought me, "In felice". Received a

    letter from Cousin Ellen and a postal from Edwin announcing the death of baby Edna and letting

    of the serious sickness of Jennie and Done. In the evening Carrie Lodice and I went to "Cottage

    Service" at the Rectory.

    Feb. 28thFriday

    Gert. Krum up in the morning. after dinner dressed and stayed at home till half-past four, was

    surprised to see Mr Dunlop in town, he went up to the office to see Father but it was locked. on

    account of being cleaned, and he didnot think of honoring one with a call. at 4.30 went down to

    Gert Cadwells stayed an hour, then went to Gert Krums for a few moments Borrowed her "New

    York City Ettiquette" and "Opera" of "Pinafore".50Carrie & I went to Evening service a large

    attendance.

    Feb. March 1stSaturday

    The "Society" Meeting tonight. on account of so many girls going to the "Revival" After dinner

    went down to Sate to change my Library book, she was at church, changed hers and my own.

    borrowed her "Swiss Family Robinson".51Dreadfully windy day. hard work going down, Sate

    and Gert, walked up with me. Mr Colvin52called and persuaded me to take a class in the S.S.53

    after tea played dominoes.

    March 2ndSunday

    Carrie & I went to morning service communion. took my class. it is a large class divided. I have

    half and Lizzie Peck54half. mine consists of five girls aged from 12 to 14 yrs. after dinner read

    "Vixen" a new novel by Miss M.E. Braddon, it is delightful.55Lodice came up and went to

    evening service with Carrie and I.

    Mar. 3rdMonday

    a lovely warm day. Jennie came after me at 2. and we had a two hours drive. then I went

    shopping for Mother, then down to Sate & Gert's for a few minutes, returned the books I

    borrowed of Gert Last Friday. After tea, played dominoes. received a letter from Aunt Mate. Nell

    took Carrie & Lodice riding

    Carrie went out shopping at 3.00. Lodice came up stayed to supper. went to Cottage service with

    Carrie and I, at Mrs Holden's,56Paul Dakin went home with Lodice. Frank Maynard with Carrie

    and I, Received a letter from Grace Curtis.

    Mch. 5thWednesday

    Carrie and I went to morning service. took a walk afterwards. after dinner stitched pillowcases.

    then Carrie and I went down and paid Mrs Gilotson. After Supper studied over S.S. Lesson. at

    eight went up to the Rectory to teachers meeting. home at 9.45

    Mch. 6thThursday

    Snowing all day. After supper played dominoes

    Mch. 7thFriday

    Mending my brown dress. didnot change my dress till after four. Nell, Lodice, Jennie, Susie,

    Helen Finch57and Sate Parsons all here at once. After supper, Carrie & Gert went down to Nell's

    I went to Evening Service. In the afternoon Susie & I talked "Centennial".

    Mch. 8thSaturday

    A lovely bright day. After dinner went down to the Library to change book took Middlemarch by

    George Eliot,58Carrie went with me, Sate and Gert. Krum came up with us, afterwards Carrie &

    I went shopping, Our Society meeting at McDonald's I didnot attend. Reading old letters written

    in 1796 &c59

    Mch. 9thSunday

    Lodice came up and went to Morning Service with Carrie & I My second Sunday as a teacher.

    After dinner read old letters. gertie & I went to evening service

    Library together. took "the woman in White"68this time. home at 3.30 at 4. Gert Krum came up

    and we went around together, shopping. at 6.45 Sate & Gert came after me and we went to the

    Club meeting at Nan Cheney's (Mrs. B. Fowler's69) a pleasant evening six members there in spite

    of the rain. but we did not elect officers on account of the absence of two members in the course

    of the evening had quite a lovely discussion about "Walking matchs" five against one that one

    myself.

    Election day. a year ago Papa was reelected.

    In the morning had a lot of fun, Will done up several enticing looking bundles, put them out on

    the walk, such fun to see the people go for them finish the letter to Aunt Lib. After dinner laid

    down have taken cold do not feel well. After supper Nell & Lodice came up to go to Miss

    Kingsbury's 'Musicale' we all went with the exception of Papa & Mary O'L. it was very

    pleasant. all did [?].

    A windy day. carrie & I went to Morning service and then went shopping. there is to be another

    walking-match Carrie & I have again received a Com-ticket. Nell Lodice & Sate up in the

    a lovely day. sewing on the machine all the afternoon. At 7. P.M. we all went to the Academy

    exhibition at the Pres. church Gertie spoke. "The Last Hymn".74did it well.

    a lovely day. Gert K& Sate up in the afternoon. went up to Miss OCwith me, Charly Hopkins

    called on Carrie Chas. Dix took Carrie riding. Everyone says gertie spoke best and did

    splendidly.

    A dark day embroidering a flounce to my gray skirt. Mrs Frank Lapham the Third found today

    died suddenly. Jennie Haviland came after dinner and took me riding an hour & a half. went to

    Sandy Hill very windy. didnot feel well enough to go to "Cottage Service" the Girls went down

    to Nell's and made chocolate caramels & vinegar candy.

    snowing nearly all day sick, didnot go to morning service for fear I could not go in the evening.

    Miss Peck came up in the afternoon made a row about my being a witness to Lodice's baptism a

    great idea at the last moment, when Mr Olin thought it all right and Lodice had chosen me, after

    an hour talk I think I convinced her that she "had made a mistake". Nell & Gert. Snow75came up

    with Lodice, Miss Peck & I stood with her. Lodice came home with us she is going to stay a few

    days with Carrie.

    A pleasant day. went shopping in the morning. Libbie Colvin called in the afternoon went to see

    the children baptized. went up to Miss O'connors have taken cold. didnot go to the Club meeting

    April 13. Easter Sunday

    Feeling miserably but up to go to morning service at eight Jennie H. came down and went with

    us (Lodice Gert. & I) at 10.30 went to chuch the church full, a short S.S. at noon then service &

    carol singing at 3.30 only two of my scholars present. None of Lizzie Peck's. didnot go out to in

    the evening, there was no service at our church. Lodice went with Nell to the Roman Catholic.

    feeling miserably all day didnot go out. finished my skirt. Sate & Gert up in the afternoon.

    a rainy dismal day. Lodice went back to Nell's this morning. feeling bad with my cold.

    Susie came up and went with Gertie to Miss Griffen's wedding at the church Carrie went with

    her crowd, the bride looked very lovely they said in white tulle a long vail white roses. Sate Gert.

    A dreadful hot day. over 100 in the shade by our thermometer. sewing all day until 2.30 took

    bath dressed went up to Miss Higbys to make the Floral Letters for the S.S. celebration tomorrow

    short of flowers stayed till 5.30. home to supper at 6.30 Went to the first meeting of our Archery

    Club. eight members present we shot till 8. in Sate's yard then adjourned to Gert's & stayed till

    9.30 music cards oranges &c. we shot at a range of fifteen feet. After a few shots around to try

    our skill we took sides. Gert K_ Sate & I against Bertha, Ada & Mary Price, After three rounds

    of three arrows each. our side beat a score of 83 to 65 then Nan Cheney came with her six foot

    None of us went to Morning Service. out to S.S. at 5. went up to prepare the letters at 6. P.M. the

    annual S.S. festival with Object Lesson. A Light-house built of brick with revolving lantern, and

    a fog-bell. also the words Whit-Sunday A.D. 1879 spelt out with the Floral letters one letter

    brought up at a time. from a class which recited a text with the word light in it. My class did

    nicely four present. Lizzie Peck took her class today. the service was out at eight

    feeling a little better. working on my pocket all day finished it at 2.30 then dressed and Carrie &

    I went shopping after tea Mr. H. came for me to go down to Nell Little's to make buttonhole

    bouquets for the "Hooks" went. Gert & Sate Jerry & Walter Peck (he is to take Sate on the

    Excursion) there, a Mr. Brewer from Utica86came he is to take Nell. after the bouquets were

    made waltzed a little and then home went to bed at eleven, Papa a good deal better,

    July 4. Friday

    We only shot 4 rounds of three arrows on the first Cora88shot first. Gert. next and I last. on the

    first round Cora missed every shot also Gert. I put in two arrows onto the blk. on the second

    Cora missed every arrow

    After the archery came tea. then we all went to ours rooms to get ready for the "Hop". had a most

    jolly time. didnot go over till afterthey had danced the first set. enjoyed hop very much danced

    till 1.00 then the wind having gone down and the full moon up went out on the Lake Mr. H. & I

    alone for an hour, came back and in a short time went over to the room for a rest. all of us. had a

    lot of fun Mr Brewer. Nell Sate & I at 3.30 Sate & I went out rowing together for a short time.

    then to breakfast

    the Excursion numbered 60. couples

    didn't sleep but two hours. up at four already at ten minutes of six when Mr. Hamilton came. we

    went down directly and by rare good luck got seats together on top. Nell, Mr. Brewer, Mr. H &

    myself on top seats. Gert, Jerry, Sate & Walter on the seat in front of us. a most enjoyable ride

    up. again found seats together on the Horicon.89After reaching Pearl Point it began to rain and

    continued lightly for a half-hour. then the sun came out and shone the remainder of the day.

    Nell, Sate & I roomed together. in the large cottage. Gert. Kwent over to the H.I.H. at dinner

    Nell, Mr. B. Mr. H & I were together after dinner we went rowing over to "Summer Rest"90staid

    about an hour Mrs Florence Pease came by with Mr. Craig her affianced. returning to Pearl Point

    to see the races. the Lake became so rough only one race (the gents. double scull) was rowed.

    then came the other games. And lastly our archery trial only Cora Gert K. and I entered (see

    preceeding page)

    My twenty-first birthday

    Sun rose bright and beautiful. At breakfast we three couple were all at the same table I having no

    appetite, from breakfast time till after we were on the boat I was miserably sick but managed to

    sit up, and get along. we all got seats in the same coach inside we preferred, very pleasant ride

    This is the first I have written in Journal since June 1st. All between that date and this, written

    after by pure guesswork. After dinner Carrie & I went shopping, bought my blk. grenadine. went

    down to Nell's to see if we could get Miss Griffen, N. G. went over to gert's got my arrows.

    stopped into Sate's, after tea went over to Lib's stayed till eight, when Gertie came she was gone

    Tried to get Mrs Arnold to make my dress this week could not. Jennie Haviland came into see

    Mother canning cherries and raspberries making currant Jelly. in the morning swept my room

    &c. after dinner served till after five, dressed. after tea went over to Adda Wilcox's to the

    went out on the Lake. found Nell. Coffin Sate P. & Gert. K. took them in the boat stayed in it till

    7.30. but the College race was postponed. I was for Columbia Gert K. for Wesleyan

    The College race was rowed this morning at 8. Columbia won in 8.26 the fastest

    change in the weather, real cold

    time on record. Miss Gage came at 1.30 worked all the afternoon. when she went left a good deal

    Miss Gage came. working on buntings Rain towards night. could not have Archery Meeting

    a dark morning. sun came out at noon a lovely afternoon. Carrie & Gert. went to morning service

    I went to S.S. but was hardly well enough for that. After dinner sat on the piazza. Charlie

    Hopkins made us a call. Lodice came up went to evening service with us. she giggled aloud

    Miss Gage came. a lovely day. Gert. Cadwell called in the morning. after dinner went with Nell

    had the Doctor prescription of Alves & iron pills put up. took one at night

    evening. the Lawn Party is given by the Ladies of our church. Papa & Will came home on the

    received the news this noon of the death of her uncle, had a reelection of officers. Cora Roberts,

    Captain, Gert Krum, Secy, Gert. Cadwell Treas, only eight members going to use the bow. to

    July 29. Tuesday

    shopping all the morning till 11. then made my Cap (which they decided at the last not to wear).

    After dinner went with the girls to sit again for their pictures. then home and sewed like a steam-

    engine on my sash &c. dressed ready to go at 8.15 wore blk grenadine wore pond lilys at my

    waisr and throat. Carrie, Nell & Lodice went with Papa & I. they wore their dotted muslins. in

    the Archery Contest we shot as sides the Cardinal & cream against the Pinks & blues

    a lovely day. Sate up in the morning. Miss Gage here. Mammas dress cut out, she is to take it

    has notice of the Lawn Party. saying I made the best score. Gert Krum second. Charley Hopkins

    very busy getting ready. Wrote to S. J. Yandell, Aunt Mate & Cousin Ellen. Carrie & I shopping

    a lovely day. started Aunt Mary for Saratoga & we in a little coach for "Summer Rest", coming

    down Mother & I both feeling miserably at Bolton saw Mr. John B. [ManiJ?] on the 'Mohican'

    deck. he said he was coming to call, also said J. W. Dunlop was not there. When we reached the

    Cottage I was obliged to lie down for a while, all busy getting settled.

    In the morning. After 'Horicon' time We children attended by Ed. made the ascent of Shelving

    Rock. lovely views. found the mountain in some places blue with whortle-berries all had a feast.

    At the very top waved our hats and handkerchiefs to "Summer Rest" which Father answered with

    a mirror. arrived home about 1.30. decidedly tired.

    Wednesday Aug. 27

    Exquisite day. After 'Horicon' time the juniors of the family rowed to the "calf-pen." had

    Luncheon on a small island a little way above the "pen". home about 3.00. In the evning, Papa

    went with us down to French Point to attend a hop. rowed down by Ed. most beautiful

    moonlight, at the hop met Mr. [Masie?]: very poky time as far as dancing was concerned

    Thursday Aug. 28

    Attended hop at Pearl Point. the place was splendidly illuminated, all had a delightful time, best

    time I have had at any hop at the Lake. therefore it was first class

    Friday Aug. 29.

    All went aboard the Horicon at 8. P.M. Excursion down to Roger's Rock met lots of friends Very

    unpleasant in some respects

    "Pinafore" and fished the rest of us sailed down in the "Ranger" and explored the bay. Mary

    O'Lremained at home. two unknown gentlemen came while we were gone used the Bow and

    Arrows &c. who they were, remains a mystery.

    Saturday Sept. 6.

    After Horicon time the juniors accompanied by Mother went up to the Shelving Rock Will sailed

    back home just in time for dinner. Afternoon same party sailed down to kettle island, coming

    back stopped at gravelly Father fishing down at R.R. bay. Most lovely weather

    Sunday. Sept. 7.

    Lovely weather. Mother and children sailed down North-west bay and up the creek first time any

    of us were ever there. Most delightful time, rowed back, home about 4.30. N. S. Jarvis called in

    the evening, wrote out for us the song of the Noble Seven

    Nearly everyone left the H. I.H. this afternoon. very rough lake, bright weather

    Packed up in the morning at took the afternoon boat for home with much regret. raining all day

    until just before the boat came. the old home seemed very pleasant after all. girls up in the

    Received invitations from the Dunlops & Grace to spend a week with each

    afternoon Jennie Haviland took Gert. Krum Carrie & I to the Fair. Gert & Carrie on the backseat

    At 8 A.M. Carrie started with the Coffins for Camp Andrews Lake George. and at 11.30 I took

    the train for Saratoga arrived all right, took hack to Caroline St. cordial reception, met Emersons

    wife102and saw the children for the first time. Met a Miss Young of [Lwy?]. she is visiting Miss

    Record. called on Cousin Mary Bockes103she was out.

    Friday. Sept 26.

    saw. the Judge

    In the morning called again at Mrs. B's found her very pleasant. she invited me to spend the day

    with her to-morrow, accepted. Emerson brought me a letter at noon from Papa inclosed one from

    Grace saying she was going home tomorrow, answered it went out in the afternoon to the stores

    & to the Park. (it is lovely) in the evening attended the concert at the "United States".

    Saturday Sept 27.

    Went to Mrs. B's stayed until twelve them went up to Caroline St. and Cousin Celia went with

    me to the Depot, saw. Grace her Father Mother and Mrs. Domett. the latter stops in Saratoga,

    came back to Mrs. B's to dinner, stayed until 9. P.M. delightful visit like Cousin Mary very

    much, Saw Mr. Will. Bockes104for a few minutes he and his wife are staying at their Cottage out

    at the Lake.

    Didnot attend church walked with Celia, Miss Young and Willie to the Cemetery. enjoyed

    called upon Lizzie Robinson. went to Tracy's store bought a picture of Clara Louise Kellogg,105

    which resembles Cousin Kate in some measure, went to call upon Mrs. Domett she was not in

    and to Tracy's to see little Florence, and then to Mrs. B's to say good bye. After dinner called

    upon Mrs Hughes, and at 3. P.M. started for the Depot. Arrived at home all right had three calls

    from the girls before I had time to take off my hat, after Supper went down to Nell Little's to

    arrange for an Archery Club picnic.

    Tuesday Sept. 30

    Getting ready for picnic, going to ask the gentlemen, three of the girls have backed out and as

    three are away the only leaves six to go.

    Wednesday Oct. 1.

    A lovely day. at 8.30 we girls started from Gert. Cadwell's in a four-seated rig. (the girls were

    Gert. C. Gert Krum Nell Little Ada Wilcox, Nan Cheney and myself) picked the boys up some at

    the Hook rooms and some at their residences the gentlemen were Will. Hitchcock. Add. Tearse.

    Thomp. Barnes Mr. H.Bishop, Paul Dakin and Mrs. J. Van Rensselaer. We drove to the

    Reservoir had our picnic started for home about 7. P.M. then the gentlemen persuaded us to go to

    Brown's and have a dance it was worked up before we started five other couple came up from the

    village with the music. we didnot get home until 4. A.M. very tired by well pleased the affair.

    Carrie came home at noon from the Lake.

    Thursday Oct. 9.

    Mamie Vaughan went home to day she called upon me yesterday. promised to write.

    In the evning went to Mrs H. Lapham invited by Miss Gertrude Thompson. about twelve couples
