Dear Parents, Every day I am impressed by the achievements of Wavell students in and outside the classroom. Whilst the number one focus at Wavell is academic performance, the extra curricular programs that support this focus in the arts and sport, are a feature of Wavell that our community should be proud of. The Senior and Junior dance troupes, under the leadership of dance teacher Miss Farrelly and supported by Miss Broad, had some solid performances recently at the Brisbane Dance Eisteddfod. Our Seniors achieved a fourth place and the Juniors received a highly commended award. I would like to congratulate all students, teachers and parents involved in the competition and thank them for their many hours rehearsing for the competitions. The preparation for dance eisteddfod was this year, made even more challenging due to its proximity to our school musical. Music at Wavell continues to thrive. This was clearly evident with the recent Showcase Concert held on Friday, 29 May. A wonderful concert was held with very entertaining acts which highlight the fantastic talents of our music students and teachers. I would like to offer my congratulations to the hardworking Music Committee parents for their smooth organisation of the night. Sincere thanks go to the Instrumental Music teachers – Mrs Jones, Ms Piggott, Mrs Baldwin, Mrs Cull and Mr Mitchell for their expert tuition and preparation of the students. Six students have been recently named in Queensland School Sporting teams to compete at upcoming National Titles – Nandia Els ( 15 years Netball) ; Dejzha Pene, Carl Jackson, Jack Paterson (15 years Rugby League) and two students in the Open Rugby League State Squad – Yessie Fauid and Jack Lote . I wish these students well in their respective competitions. I am sure Wavell will see further cause for celebration as the sporting calendar progresses. With more state sporting carnivals yet to be held, we should see more Wavell students selected to represent Queensland. Last week, Year 10 students participated in a highly effective Careers Day. Students were able to interact with members from a wide range of professions and trades to assist them to make informed decisions as they continue to plan their senior school career pathway. Thank you to the Year 10 staff for their expert organisation of the day. All students and teachers are now in exam mode. I am confident students are well prepared to do their best. The Year 12 results achieved will contribute towards the seniors’ exit results and form a large part of the assessment used to rank students within their subjects later in the year. It is important all students continue to aspire and achieve the best possible academic outcome. The effort made by each student in preparation, is what makes the difference. Year 12 students continue after the exams on vital work to ensure they are best placed on exit from secondary school. It is essential that all are in attendance. Our Year 12s will complete their second and final QCS Practice Test following the exams on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 June. This is fundamental preparation for students who wish to sit the actual QCS Test in Term 3. There is also a compulsory Certificate 1 in Information and Digital Media workshop for Year 12 Non-OP students which students MUST attend in order to complete the certificate. Report cards for all students will be POSTED home on the last day of term, Friday 26 June. The reports will be accompanied by booking instructions for the Parent Teacher Interviews - Tuesday, 21 July from 3:30pm – 7:00pm. Families are reminded to finalise any outstanding school resource and textbook charges and subject levies before the end of Term 2. The final week of Term 2 involves many extra curricular activities: Year 7 Camp to Noosa North Shore, Year 10 Work Experience, and Work Experience for some Senior Certificate courses. Parents of Year 9 students will soon receive a letter detailing the Human Relationship Education program. Year 9 students will also be involved in assessment tasks on our second Science Day on Thursday, 25 June. This day is a compulsory event. School continues for all students up to and including Friday, 26 June. Please remember to ensure your child understands that every day at school counts. I expect all students to be in full time attendance and engaged in learning until the very last day of term. Parents are expected to support this requirement and any legitimate absence explained by a note or phone call to the school. Enrolment interviews for Year 7 2016 will occur over the next week – please ensure you have submitted enrolment applications for 2016. If you have friends considering Wavell High for 2016, please encourage them to submit an enrolment application as soon as possible. Your assistance to finalise enrolments promptly is appreciated.
