Diamond Springs–El Dorado Fire Protection District
Is testing qualified Internal and External candidates for
Fire Captain/EMT: $78,507 to $101,154 Annual
Fire Captain/Paramedic: $82,434 - $106,210 Annual
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Fire Captain is the first level supervisor. He/she reports to a chief officer designated by the Fire
Chief. The Fire Captain may be assigned to a suppression company on shift or assigned to an
administrative position on a forty (40) hour work week. Under direction, he/she is responsible for the
supervision of assigned resources and personnel, and activities occurring on district property. The Fire
Captain is responsible to support and enforce district policies, procedures, rules and regulations. He/she
acts as Incident Commander at emergency incidents until relieved by a higher ranking officer. The Fire
Captain performs related duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Directs and supervises assigned personnel
Ensures compliance with district policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Takes corrective
action when compliance is not attained
Responds to fire and emergency incidents, ascertains the immediate situation, takes appropriate
action, and remains in command of resources until relieved by a higher ranking officer
Prepares incident reports and other reports as required
Plans, coordinates and supervises the fire prevention and inspection activities for assigned
personnel

Schedules and conducts training sessions for career and volunteer personnel
Schedules and assigns overtime coverage in compliance with policy for vacancies due to
vacation, sick leave or other causes
Supervises maintenance of district property and grounds
Assumes responsibility for assigned collateral duties
Serves as a chief officer when assigned
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Modern fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical care principles, practices, techniques
and procedures
The Incident Command System as adopted by FIRESCOPE
Modern personnel supervision and management principles and techniques
Laws related to fire protection, fire prevention and the delivery of emergency medical service
Characteristics of a wide variety of flammable and hazardous materials
Ability To:
Express ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, representatives of
other agencies and the public
Prepare and maintain important records and reports
Instruct effectively, maintain discipline, stimulate interest and command respect of officers and
subordinate personnel
Make effective use of personnel, equipment and apparatus in emergency and routine situations
Drive and operate district vehicles and equipment

California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer
Rescue Systems 1

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certifications:
Maintain Emergency Medical Technician 1 certification for the duration of employment.
Maintain CPR-C certification or equivalent for the duration of employment.
Maintain a valid California Commercial Class B or Firefighter Class B Driver License with
Tank, Hazardous Materials and Air Brake endorsements for the duration of employment.
The employee shall maintain a valid Department of Motor Vehicle qualified medical exam.
Completion of four California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer certification courses. The CSFM
Fire Officers certification will be required prior to appointment.
Satisfactorily complete all individual performance standards and Standard Company Evolution’s
required of suppression personnel for the duration of employment.
Graduation from High School or equivalent.
Hazardous Materials First Responder Operational.
Experience:
Five years recent experience as a fulltime career firefighter

annual gross)
Cal PERS Safety Retirement: 3% @55
for active members of Cal PERS and
2.7% @ 57 for applicants who are not
active members of Cal PERS
Health Savings Benefit: Dental, Vision,
Hearing up to $2,400 per year
Holiday Pay: 144 hours per year
Uniform Allowance: $525 per year
Cal PERS Medical up to
$1950.70/Month = $23,408.40/year

ASSESSMENT CENTER
Successful candidates who pass the written exam will continue through the remainder of the process,
which will be held, tentatively, the first week of March 2015. Exact date(s) TBD.
Scores earned through the testing process will be used to establish a promotional list. Final appointments
will be based on a Chief’s Interview.
