MAKING THE EXCEPTIONAL HAPPEN

This year was always going to be very special, as we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee and reflect on the achievements of the University since the Charter was signed on 21 December 1955. It has been made all the more significant by some outstanding achievements. We became one of the top 100 universities in the world for the first time. We appeared in the top 10 of all three of the most influential UK league tables for the first time. And we were named The Times and The Sunday Times Sports University of the Year.

Together our alumni, supporters, students and staff over the past six decades have made the University the world-leader it is today and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this success.

I know the huge challenge we face ahead of us to maintain this level of success. In a competitive, international economy we must continue to find innovative ways to invest in our teaching and in our research, so I am delighted to launch a £3 million match funding scheme to bring more of the brightest and the best research students to Exeter.

To advance our pioneering work, we are asking you to invest in partnership with us through our unique Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarship Match Fund.

Your donation will support a talented aspiring researcher to take their study to the next level through a research PhD at Exeter. You will be helping aspiring PhD students expand the boundaries of knowledge while strengthening Exeter’s international research reputation.

Your support really can make a difference.

Why we need Doctoral Scholarships

Supporting research World-leading research teams are underpinned by PhD students who drive innovation, foster collaboration and deliver impact in some of the biggest global challenges we face. From climate change to conflict, to diseases like dementia and diabetes, Exeter’s research is already recognised both nationally and internationally for its quality and its impact. Our challenge now is to build scale – to increase the size of our academic research community and maximise the global impact of our research. The Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarship Match Fund will help us to achieve this and will leverage significant further research funding.

Supporting studentsMany talented prospective research students are barred from study if they cannot afford fees or access sufficient loans. Many of our peer institutions have vast endowments and offer generous scholarships. We are building our own endowment fund for the long term, but we also need your support to invest now.

We want to attract the best PhD research students and enable those without financial means to study at Exeter. Your support through the Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarship Match Fund can make this happen.

Will you help us to bring the brightest and the best researchers to Exeter to advance our pioneering work?

Without the scholarship I wouldn’t have been able to study my PhD at Exeter. I’m incredibly grateful to my sponsor for this opportunity.

US student Taylor FitzGerald began her PhD scholarship in 2014.

The A.G. Leventis Foundation has generously funded several postgraduate scholarships in Classics, alongside early career posts.

How the Match Fund works

PhD studentships range from £18,000 to £136,000 and we will support your donation 2:1 with an investment from Exeter. So if you chose to support a home or EU fee only studentship (value £18,000), you would contribute £12,000 over four years and the University would match this with £6,000. The cost to you – if eligible for Gift Aid – would be £2,400 per year. The table below explains this further.

You can support UK / EU and international students in a variety of ways and we are happy to work with you to develop bespoke packages. Full Studentships will cover fees, living costs plus a contribution towards research costs including fieldwork and attendance at conferences.

You can pool your gift with a fellow supporter to create a single studentship and you can choose where your support is directed within any of our four research themes: health; environment and sustainability; understanding ‘Living Systems’ to tackle disease; and enriching society and culture.

Together we can make a difference – contact us today.

Indicative guide to funding options

I am proud to be involved in this great initiative to bring the best PhD researchers to Exeter. Supporting a PhD student from Africa where I am originally from, feels a fitting way to give back to Exeter in this special year for my University.

Alumnus Neil Harvey (Accountancy Studies 1985) is a founding donor of the Diamond Jubilee Doctoral Scholarship Match Fund.
