BENICIA — The sturgeonaction down in San PabloBay was the top bet forBenicia anglers, but sincemost weighed in for theSuper Bowl Sturgeon Derby,Pam Hayes at Benicia Baitand Tackle didn’t have a lotof detailed success stories.There was a nice early show-ing of striped bass that waspromising.

“It’s been a madhouse,and the anglers did verywell out there,” said Hayes.“San Pablo Bay, in about 8feet of water, seemed to bethe magic combination.There were more fish caughtnear Sonoma Creek than thePumphouse area.”

“On Saturday, they had limits of crabs, but I didn’ttalk to them since they got back today,” said Arcoleoon Sunday afternoon. “I’m sure they caught plenty ofsanddabs, and it’s likely they also had limits of crabs.”The angler counts on trips remained low, with 10 onSaturday, and 14 on Sunday.

“Fishing was great, we re-leased 28 keepers, and oneoversized 72 incher,” said Tal-madge. Winning angler, de-termined by a drawing of thesuccessful anglers, was MikeWalker of San Jose. Walkertook home a chunky pay-

check of $3,027.50. In secondplace, “Pastor” Paul won$2,162.50.

“First place for the kids wasJohn Hise of Hayward,” saidTalmadge. “He received a cus-tom rod and matching Avetreel. I had enough sponsorsand help to put together agoodie package for every kid.”

“We had six weighmasterswho worked their butts off!”said Talmadge. “At one point,we had five fish hanging atonce.” The weighmaster chaseboats must measure and verifythe sturgeon caught and re-leased. “I have been receivingemails and reports of nothingbut high praise on the event.In fact even Fish & Game wasthere and gave us very highmarks and was very impressedwith how it was run. I can’tthank everyone involvedenough, including the fisher-men for making this a greatsuccess.”
