  • DIAL. The concept.

Lighting know-how. The idea behind the foundation of DIAL GmbH developed in 1989, the motivation being to provide the market with manufacturer-independent photometric and lighting design know-how. It was our aim to provide application-oriented research and offer market-related services.

The idea was the brainchild of leading man-ufacturers and institutes who today, as the DIAL Association e.V., are partners in DIAL together with the EGC GmbH.

Building technology. With the launching of the European Installation Bus (EIB, now KNX) the portfolio was extended to include building technology.

DIALux. Triggered by the competition faced by individual luminaire manufactur-ers who wished to focus again on their core business, namely the development of luminaires, the successful light planning software DIALux came into being. This was the beginning of professional virtual light planning.

LUMsearch. The new online search engine LUMsearch enables anyone to find suitable luminaires for any desired application. This is fast and simple at www.lumsearch.com.

DIALacademy. For over twenty years DIAL has been passing on knowledge about light, building technology, architecture and tech-nology and software. Now DIAL includes all these training and educational activities in the one name DIALacademy. Our new state-of-the art building provides an optimal environment for this.

Dieter Polle Managing Director at DIAL04

  • Andreas Bossow Assistant Managing Director at DIAL

Our main partner is the DIAL Association e.V., an open association of international companies engaged in light and build-ing technology whose aim is to heighten awareness for better light and its wise ap-plication in building technology. DIAL was founded as a company operating according to the principles of the free market which it has done successfully so far.

Today DIAL is a dynamic company which operates freely and independently on inter-national markets. Our teams in the fields of light, architecture and technology, building technology and software plan light, advise customers, measure luminaires, test KNX and DALI components, develop software and run seminars and workshops.

We know our customers and their markets and with each project we benefit from our wide experience. Manufacturers, architects, planners, engineers and skilled craftsmen value our market-oriented solu-tions, our reliable support and our practice-related seminars.

We are motivated by the purpose and quality of our work, and the way we work is characterized by transparency, respect, fair-ness and inquiring minds. All of us at DIAL are committed and enthusiastic about our work and look forward to each new chal-lenge.

    Light. Planning.

We plan light. Professionally and with en-thusiasm. Our fascination for working with light influences the way we work. Our range of services covers all fields of architec-ture. Indoors and outdoors. From lighting the home to prestigious lighting for public buildings and public spaces.

Our philosophy is clear and simple. We know that a minimum degree of light is necessary for you to work and find your way around. But we want more. We want people to have a feeling of well-being. We want them to experience and enjoy being in the indoor and outdoor spaces which we design. It is fundamental to our philosophy that light is not just there for its own sake. For us light is always an integral part of architecture whose inner and outer struc-ture, whose building components and materials make demands on light. Peo-ple themselves also have needs which go beyond simply wanting to find their way around.

Light for people has to activate them, invite them, integrate and guide them and sometimes fascinate. Even our health is influ enced strongly by light.

Daylight is the ideal way to fulfil many of the demands made on light. There are how-ever other requirements which can only be fulfilled with artificial light which we can stage dis creetly and subtly and also dra-matically.

From lighting designer to lighting design- er: Our experience in planning flows di-rect ly into all we do from our seminars to our DIALux light planning software. We always act completely independent of manufacturer and product. In this way we can ensure that the services we offer correspond in the best possible way to the constantly changing market environ-ment.

Our research into light is market-related. Light planners can make practical use of what we develop and the advice we offer covers all questions and light planning tasks to do with architecture, town and country planning. As independent experts we ana-lyse causes, carry out measurements and write expert reports on which you can build. Our expert reports ensure a clear view when dealing with installations with daylight or artificial light.

  • DIAL tested. We operate the first accredited manufacturer-independent laboratories of their kind in Germany. Our laboratories are certified in

accordance with DIN EN ISO / IEC 17025 quality management and have been in oper-ation since 1998. In 2007 we were accred-ited as fulfilling the S.A.F.E. requirements to acquire the Swiss MINERGIE label. At the centre of our photometric competence is the uninterrupted tech nological retraceability to the nationally and internationally valid standards for luminous intensity of the PTB (national measuring insti tute of the Federal Republic of Germany). We determine accu-rate photometric and colour metric data and document the quality of your products with approval seals and test reports.

    Light. Photometric laboratory.

Our quality management ensures the greatest accuracy and reproducibility of each single measurement. At regular intervals the accreditation institute DAkkS controls whether we are qualified to carry out meas-urements and do this with the required re-producibility and in accordance with currently applicable regulations. Adherence to our own QM system is also monitored. The DAkkS is a member of the International Laboratory Ac-creditation Cooperation ILAC which means that our accreditation for measuring and testing services is internationally recognized.

We have made it our business to provide test-ing services related to building technology and we perform tests according to customer requirements in our accredited laboratory.

For more than 15 years we have been per-forming manufacturer-neutral EIB /KNX soft-ware tests in our test centre. Innumerable devices, combinations and applications have succeeded in acquiring certification with our services. Primarily the interworking of devices in the physical medium is tested by examining the behaviour after stimulation (from Bus or on device).

The first EIB /KNX accredited laboratory in Germany was set up by DIAL. Here we offer manufacturer-neutral tests for software and also carry out tests during the develop-ment phase. In addition we test stack imple-mentation - we are the only testing centre worldwide qualified to do this.

Tests during development. Frequently the compatibility of the devices and /or software with EIB /KNX standards is tested before mar-ket launches, thereby identifying faults. Our experience in testing is also popular for other product and software tests. For example, we

Building technology. Laboratory and services.EIB /KNX and DALI testing laboratory.

carry out pre-serial testing in cooperation with product development departments to provide the required early verification.

Final certification tests can be simplified by using existing test sequences. As a rule, cer-tification is then possible after a short repeat test. Detailed test results are documented and the test report serves as proof that the certification test was completed successfully. The manufacturer is then entitled to apply the EIB /KNX logo to the device tested.

EIB/KNX devices, commissioning tools or plugIns for complex devices are also tested and documented in our testing laboratories.

DALI tests and protocol analysis are run with the standardized DALI tester. We can certify that the quality and requirements comply with the appropriate standards. Whenever there are questions with regard to the implementation of DALI devices from dif-ferent manufacturers, we can assist you as an independent institute.

Financial benefits. With the help of our systematic testing errors are detected at an early stage. These can then be remedied prior

to serial production, therefore helping to pre-vent expensive recalls, loss of reputation or problems for the user.

It goes without saying that our work on all the projects is completely manufacturer-independent and is carried out in utmost confidence.

  • Architecture and Technology

It has always been the case that architecture and technical progress go hand in hand. However there is a trend at present which is quite indisputable:

The demands being made on modern build-ings are not becoming simpler but, on the contrary, increasingly more complex. We try to systematically break through this com-plexity with the aim of creating environ-ments in which man and his needs are the focus of all considerations.

As a result of the debate about technical progress in buildings we have made it a core issue to offer the following services:

  • We think in networks. On the one hand the number of technical systems in todays buildings is becoming increasingly more di-verse, more extensive and more complex. On the other hand the networks between all the different crafts and trades are be-coming more automatic and more and more intricate as a result of information technology.

This is why DIAL has for many years been es-tablishing a system of thinking in networks under the term Building Systems Design.

Building Systems Design. By this term is meant the interdisciplinary creation of the technical facilities* of a building span-ning all the crafts and trades involved. This is understood as a complete dynamic ar-chitectural system. The development of a complete and networked technical concept should ideally be considered very early in the integral planning phase or within the framework of the preliminary design.

This new philosophy of creativity in build-ing technology is now not only an integral

Architecture and Technology. Building Systems Design.

part of our course of study as a Building Systems Designer but also of all the services we provide in the field of architecture and technology.

Seminars. Dynamic networking and auto-mation of all crafts and trades in the build-ing sector enable benefits which cannot be achieved with conventional building pro-grammes. These benefits unite comfort and convenience with efficiency throughout the whole life of a building and form a core ele-ment of our seminars.

Planning. We not only see modern tech-nologies as a necessity integral to mod-ern buildings but we also plan and create building technology as an integral element of dynamic architecture. Our new building in Ldenscheid (see below) embodies this philosophy.

Consultancy. We provide support based on our expertise and experience in all mat-ters relating to the realisation of challenging and complex building projects. An interdis-ciplinary team of architects, engineers and

skilled craftsmen will face the challenges which you pose. The main focus of our ex-pertise is in the fields of architecture, tech-nical facilities and building automation in accordance with HOAI 2009.

Research. We no longer see the style of a building in its composition as a static en-tity but as a dynamic organism. The debate surrounding this modified understanding of style is first and foremost a matter related to architecture and the theory of design and as such has been at the centre of intensive research at DIAL for many years.

DIALs new building, (D) Ldenscheid 2012

With a view to the Regionale 2013 in Southern Westphalia, the town of Lden- scheid is developing a new training and education centre 415m ber NN DENK-FABRIK (Altitude 415 m. THINK TANK). Currently DIAL is constructing a new building for up to 100 staff engaged in the fields of light, building technology, architecture and technology and software. The complete architectural and techni-cal design (Building Systems Design) was penned by DIAL and further developed in workshops with external planners and designers.

The building is being erected as a passive house and temperatures are maintained exclusively by means of a ventilation system with heat recovery of up to 86%. In-ternal heat gain comes mainly from body heat and heat created by computers and lighting which alone can amount to 60W/m. The minimal remaining amount of heat required in winter and the substantially high cooling requirements in summer are supplied via reversible (performance-controlled) heat pumps.

So that the building can be run at all times with a high degree of energy efficiency, while still ensuring comfort and convenience, it is necessary to integrate dynamic operating strategies with the aid of building automation. Solid ceilings and outer walls are included in the energy and air-conditioning concept as thermal storage units. Almost all the installations for the technical facilities, with the exception of lighting and fire-fighting equipment, are laid in false floors.

  • DIALacademy. Experience knowledge.Seminars and workshops.

Buildings are becoming increasingly more complex and, as a consequence thereof, so is the planning. Added value can be created by considering this complex-ity and systematically overcoming it with target-oriented solutions. It is of special importance not to reduce the complexity but rather to understand it and thus derive the greatest benefit from it. In this way an architectural process develops which is fun, has definite benefits and is worth living for. Architects, planners, skilled craftsmen, manufacturers, in short all who are involved in these processes, are constantly expected to keep up with the latest developments.

For over twenty years DIAL has been passing on knowledge about light, build-ing technology, architecture and technol-ogy and software. Now DIAL includes all

these training and educational activities in the one name DIALacademy. Our new state-of-the art building provides an optimal environment for this.

DIALacademy means practically applica-ble knowledge of complex issues - neutral and manufacturer-independent in all fields of knowledge. Man and his needs are al-ways at the centre of our attention. Based on their wide expert knowledge and com-prehensive practical experience our trainers prepare seminars and workshops on com-plex matters, standards and market trends, combining many disciplines. The result is compact and useful know-how with practi-cal relevance.

Learning by Doing that means doing it yourself, not chalk and talk, absorbing and

consolidating newly acquired knowledge. Processes which you have performed your-self can then be applied directly in practice.

The learning environment. Our lighting seminars take place in our white laboratory. This is fitted with a height-adjustable ceil-ing so that different light applications can be demonstrated. The building technol-ogy seminars take place both in our own modern seminar rooms and in our training laboratory. The theoretical knowledge of EIB / KNX, LON and BACnet is consolidated by means of practical exercises with real de-vices from different manufacturers. All our training facilities provide a pleasant learning environment and are fitted with ergonomi-cally designed seating.

    Your benefits at a glance

    > First step towards becoming a BACnet expert

    > Knowledge of BACnet independent of manufacturer bias

    > High proportion of practical exercises with devices from various manufacturers

    > Integration of KNX, LON and DALI

    > DIAL: over 15 years experience with building au-tomation systems and a member of the European BACnet organisation

BACnet protocols are being used more and more frequently to network automatic com-ponents in large building properties. The transmission technology BACnet/IP is often used at the management and automation level. At the field level well-established sys-tems such as KNX, LON, DALI and SMI find widespread application and are linked to BACnet. In addition, when using the BAC-net/MS-TP transmission standards, it is pos-sible to directly integrate the corresponding BACnet field devices.

An increasing number of globally operating companies in the building automation sec-tor are involved in BACnet and offer a wide range of components and solutions. To put it briefly, we can rightly say that BACnet has really made a name for itself and enjoys in-creasing popularity.

What is really missing however are experts who are familiar with the sophisticated technology and are able to fulfil the de-mands of the customers. For, in order to plan, project, build and operate BACnet systems efficiently and successfully, it is nec-essary to acquire comprehensive specialized knowledge. DIAL provides this basic techni-cal knowledge in its seminar BACnet. Ba-sics of system integration.

Not only is theoretical knowledge passed on but there are many practical exercises in our own training laboratory with devices from various manufacturers. After successfully completing the final theory and practical test participants are awarded a certificate as documentation that they have acquired special BACnet knowledge.
