DIABETES NURSINGDiabetes NursingA branch of nursing that focuses on caring for diabetic patients.Diabetes is a disease of the endocrine system. Endocrine or endocrinology nurses may work with people who have diabetes, and go by the title diabetes nurse. As diabetes mellitus has become an increasingly common problem, theres a growing need for diabetes nurse educators and disease management specialists able to provide patients with the information and treatment they need to effectively manage their diabetes.

2Diabetic Nurseare registered nurses who assist patients to manage diabetes.

main duty is to educate patients and their families about diabetes and the self-management skills required. They provide advice on exercise, diet and medication and monitoring insulin levels. These nurses often work in outpatient clinics and often travel to hold clinics in regional areas.3Roles/duties:Dealing with complications of patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.Working closely with physicians, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.Educating patients of the best practices in improving their health.Informing patients families on living with diabetes.

Diabetes Nursing Educator

provides information to patients with pre-diabetes and diabetes in an effort to help patients make informed decisions about prevention and managing their conditions

Duties:

Working with patients to assess their needs and to develop a plan that includes educational interventions and self-management support strategies appropriate for the patientProviding education that helps the patient accomplish self-management goals

Evaluating patients periodically to determine if they are meeting their goals or if they need other interventions and future reassessmentsDeveloping, with the cooperation of the patient, a personalized follow-up plan for ongoing self-management support

Documenting the assessment and education plan, as well as interventions and outcomes

Diabetes nurse educators provide services in hospitals, physician offices, pharmacies, patients homes, and other settings. Advanced practice registered nurses typically serve under a primary specialization in their patient population focus, allowing them to further specialize as adult, gerontological, or pediatric diabetes educators10 Emerging Trends:Nurse Clinical Specialists -advances in medical science and nursing, specialization is an emerging trend in the healthcare industry 1.advances in medical science and nursing, specialization is an emerging trend in the healthcare industry.Nursesspecialize on particular population (e.g. pediatrics, geriatrics), Setting (e.g. trauma nursing, emergency room/ ER ) Disease (e.g., diabetes), Type of Care (e.g. rehabilitation/ perianesthesia in the preoperative and postoperative care) or Type of Problem (e.g. speech pathology). This can be achieved by specialized training and accreditation examinations.

11Emerging Trends:Holistic heath practitioners- provide comprehensive health and wellness healing which included nutrition, exercise and even the use of alternative medicine. This also included helping clients quit smoking, regulate alcohol intake and manage stress. The demand for health and wellness are expected to continue to grow because of the aging population particularly of the baby boom generation in western countries.Caregiversand gerontological nurses whose focus is on taking care of the elderly is one the fastest growing healthcare segments due to the aging population. This category also included fitness experts who work with patients undergoing recovery procedures as well as ordinary people who are health and figure conscious.
