ROLLING DICE?? (Q and A with Game Play Notes) (PLEASE TAKE NOTE)

1. Crazy Play (#51-85) that reads: Batter hit by pitch. Dugouts and bullpens empty into an all-out brawl! Pitcher and batter are both ejected from the game. Check each for injury. How many games is the pitcher suspended if he is a starter that is pitching in relief due to injury and suspensions? ANSWER: One game since he did not start the game per the Diamond Chart. Clip from Diamond Chart:

Due to the ABL’s 36 game season the suspensions are adjusted as follows: Pitchers that started the game are suspended the four additional games. All relief pitchers are only suspended for one additional game. All suspensions are served one at a time in the order they happened per the ABL Rulebook. 2. Crazy Play (#51-85) that reads: Batter hit by pitch. Dugouts and bullpens empty into an all-out brawl! Pitcher and batter are both ejected from the game. Check each for injury. The last available relief pitcher is ejected. Which pitcher should you use? ANSWER: Per the Diamond Chart, use a starting pitcher on the active roster that hasn’t pitched in that game with the most rest. Clip from Diamond Chart: If you run out of relief pitchers due to injury or suspension, use a starting pitcher on the active roster that hasn’t pitched in that game with the most rest. He will pitch fully rested with time to warm up. He must finish the game if he entered in relief unless he is injured or ejected. His stamina will be 12 (Long). Ignore the fatigued (exhausted) plus two base runners rule. If the starting pitcher had no rest (pitched in last game), then he must rest 5 games. If the starting pitcher had one day of rest, he must rest 4 games. If the starting pitcher had two days of rest, he must rest 3 games. If the starting pitcher had three or more days of rest, he must rest 2 games.

3. Crazy Play (#459-526) that reads: Weather patterns change. Reroll for weather. Ignore if in closed dome. If the temperature changes, do you re-adjust the pitcher’s stamina rating? ANSWER: No. Only reroll for “Precip” and “Wind”. Do not reroll for temperature.

ABL COMMISH CHAT:

Please send in any feedback you might have on the “new one hour” show. Another show is planned for later this week. Check out all the ASN Productions at http://ablcommishchat.blogspot.com/

SPRING SLAM 2010: Spring Slam will take place on Sunday May 2nd beginning at 9 a.m. in Afton at the home of the Las

Vegas Vipers. The Dawg will provide some treats and some wiffleball is planned afterwards weather permitting. Managers wishing to car pool can meet at the league office and ride up in groups to save on gas. Shawn is looking forwarding to hosting one of the ABL’s major events of the season. If you have to come late, coordinate the other two games with the opposing managers. It’s possible you could play two of the games before the slam or two of them after the slam. All teams should let the Commish know in advance of the Slam if they plan on attending and for how many games. Snacks and drinks will be on hand to munch on between games. Teams should contact their opponent just like any other play week to set up game play for the 4 game sets

Page 5: Dia5 2010 04 13 - mfooz.com · Title: Microsoft Word - Dia5_2010_04_13.doc Author: Scotty Created Date: 4/13/2010 7:03:49 PM

if that can’t attend the spring slam. Site Managers are listed in the schedule for the four games and are responsible for recaps and sheets. In all cases the site manager is the team that is home for the first series. As usual both managers should initiate contact to setup the where and when. The play week will run from April 30th till May 7th. Transaction Reminder: No Transactions will be allowed between the two game sets during Spring Slam. It will be treated like any other play week or set of playoff games for transaction purposes. ABL 50/50 RAFFLE: Antman suggested it at the ABL Winter Meetings and we are going forward with the idea. The Commish will be selling ABL 50/50 Raffle tickets all season long to help support the ABL. Half of the money collected to the winner and the other half dumped back into the ABL to help keep costs down. The drawing will be held at the Winter Meetings in November and is open to anyone. Tickets are $1.00 for 1, $2.00 for 3, $5.00 for 10, and $10.00 for 20. Just purchase them from the Commish, write you name on the back and possibly win some cash in November.

BASEBALL THOUGHTS: Hot prospect news from the Daily Pitch on usatoday.com

Scouting service: Stephen Strasburg makes the grade in debut

Stephen Strasburg delivered his 100-mph fastball as expected, but the right-hander's minor league debut didn't approach the unworldly standards he set while pitching for San Diego State, as he allowed four runs -- one earned -- and four hits and struck out eight in five innings against Class AA Altoona (Pa.). So what do we make of the 21-year-old's performance?

Inside Edge, a scouting service that provides reports for many major league teams, offers the Daily Pitch a break down of Strasburg's game here and here, but first the highlights:

• He threw 82 pitches, 60 of which were fastballs, 17 curve balls, four changeups and one slider. He threw a strike 64% of the time.

• The average speed of his fastball was 98 mph with a high of 100 mph. His curve clocked in at 83 mph.

• He received a grade of C+ for working ahead in the count, getting a first-pitch strike 50% of the time.

• He got an A+ for finishing off hitters, with 92% of two-strike at-bats becoming an out.

• Put him down for a B+ for efficiency. He got the first batter of each inning out. He also reached a three-ball count in only 14% of plate appearances, compared to the major-league average of 20%, according to Inside Edge.

Strasburg gets an overall grade of B+, which Altoona Curve catcher Kris Watts seems to concur with.

"He definitely comes to the plate hot," he said. "There's no question he has a live arm, and when you see his fastball and off-speed pitches, it is easy to see he has elite stuff.''

FUTURE ABL MANAGERS: Reminder to all managers that if you find someone interested in baseball lets get them started in the ABL Developmental Plan playing practice games. Contact the Commish for a sample set of cards/charts and start teaching the ABL’s next Billy Martin the excitement of tabletop baseball. ABL Developmental Plan Guidelines: At a minimum new perspective managers must complete four games with a current ABL manager. The potential new manager must submit score sheets and recaps for at least four games for review by the Commish. The Commish will then decide if the new perspective manager is ready for the ABL or still needs more time learning with the developmental plan.

Bottom of the 6th Braun would get a one out single, and would advance to second as Morneau would hit a shot to Hanley but Hanley would boot the ball and give first and second one down. Tulo would hit a grounder to center to score Braun and take the score to 1-0 Cats. Millwood would be lights out for the 7 innings he pitched, allowing only two hits and one walk. Adams would come in for Cbay and mow down the 8-9-1 hitters in the 8th. Bulger would come into the game for the Starfish in the 8th and get 3-4-5 out in order. In the 5th Dunn would give them the lead with a RBI single scoring Lee. After 2 quick out by Baker in the 6th He drills Gardner who charges the mound both benches clear and ESPN's Friday night fights starts a little ealy this friday afternoon in Florida. In the 7th Baker now gone from the game had Walker in to pitch Dunn would greet him with a solo blast and a 2run lead for the Terriers. Atlanta at Orlando Game # 1 a warm partly cloudy day with no wind. Doc Halladay for the Inmates and Happ for the Sharkattak. Atlanta starts off 1-0 in the top of the 1st as a BB adn 2 base hits give them the early lead. Bottom of the 1st and Tex and A-Rod go back to back for the first time as Sharks and it is 2-1 Orlando. Halladay calms down and picthes a complete game, but there is a lot of fun in between, the newly crowned "Bad Boys" of the ABL (the Sharks) get into there second bean ball game and becnh clearing brawl as Happ hits Lee and the benches go at it. The umpire ejects Derek Lee and Happ for the fight and warns the teams that any other hbp will be a 4 game suspension fo the starters and 1 game for the Relievers(which is why Jurrjens is not pitching today, his suspension). So now without Wuertz avaialble the Sharks are in dire need of

something. Massett comes in and gives up a run in the 4th and now the Inmates have a 3-2 lead. That was enough, but Orlando's pen impresses BUck with a great outing as Hawksworth pitches 3 no hit innings striking out 3. Kuo comes in in the 9th and Brajas lands one in the upper deck on his first pitch. This would be the nail in the coffin as Halladay pitches a 7 hit coplete game, the only bigs ones were the back to back in the 1st. Atlanta wins this one 4-2. Atlanta Box Score Pitching Halladay 9ip (W) HR's Barajas SB none HBP Lee(ejected for brawl) Orlando Pitching Happ 2ip Massett 3ip (L) Hawksworth 3ip Kua 1ip HR's A-rod Teixeira SB A-Rod CS Crawford (Barajas) If game one wasn't exciting enough gmae 2 was even better. Greinke goes for Atlanta and Kuroda for the Sharks. PITCHER's DUEL!!! that is all you need to know. a classic one too. Kuroda would go 7 innings with only 3 hits and 0 bb striking out 9, Greinke would go 8 innings with 5 hits and 1 run and 1 bb and 8k's..A solo shot by Sheffield int he 2nd for Atlanta and an A-BOMB by A-ROD in the 6th. So to the 9th we will go, Granderson gets a lead off bb, then Scutaro is plunked in the shoulder by WUertz, a fastball gone bad, he is out for the rest of the game which would be a bit actually. Thankfully for Shark fans Chipper hit into a DP. THen with one and 2 outs Lee is intentionally walked by Buck. This brings up Abreu, Wuertz nails him and an up and in pitch, Abreu charges the mound and yes the benches clear again.... what??? yup two in two games, the "bad boys" Have arrived. Wuertz gets a quick jab and abreu and steps back, the teams jump in the umpire can't believe it, Wuertz and Abreu of course ejected and the warning goes out again (good thing it didn't carry over form game 1). so with the bases loaded and 2 outs, Sheffield comes up to bat, K-Rod does what he does best KKKKKK! Bottom of the ninth we go, After A-Rod tries to change his intitial (to a K) Pierre gets a 1b and Gwynn follows suit, 2 on 1 out, a bb by hannigan and then a fc by Ryan. 2 out and men on 1st and 3rd. As the pitch is about to be thrown to the Pitcher (K-Rod had only faced on batter) Gwynn breaks for home...... Barajas sees him coming and tags him OUT. No stolen base to end the game... go Buck Ball. Extras we go,,,, Barajas tries

to give the one up hit as he sends one to the wall.......back back back goes Pierre, he scales the wall and Nabs the sure Home run..... WHOLLY COW!!!!! what a play.. Sharks 1,2,3 in tenth. Bottom of the 11th, Frasor hit Teixeira and is ejected and suspended one additional game, Pierre would get the base hit, on the hit and run. 1st and 3rd. one out. Pierre breaks for second and it is unattested. sb. 2nd and 3rd infield in and an rg p then Hanigan K. Top of 12... will anyone win this game???? With Kuo the last pither available on relief, the sharks chances look dim as the game goes on. Punto get s 1b, then with 2 outs Pena comes in to ph for Granderson, he fouls the ball of his big toe, goes down for about 5 minutes, is helped off and found to later have dislocated his toe, he willmiss 10 games. Paulino steps in, he points to the fence kuo , not thinking is funny, plunks him right on waist. He is ejected and suspended for an additional game and wait, who is going to pitch for the Sharks. Jurrjens, fresh off suspension and the most rested starter is coming in. he k's Prado and we go more innings. Ryan tries to bunt for a hit he rg c and the inning goes 1, hit dp. A LOOK AHEAD IN THE ABL:

Series delayed as T-Ville manager was watching the chase for the Green Jacket and a guy named

Tiger. SERIES 1 BARNEGAT BAY(8-2) AT TITUSVILLE(7-3) SITE: LENNY LIVE

HEAD TO HEAD: Titusville leads 5-3 NOTES: The B-Bay Corsairs travel to Florida for the premier series of the play week as the two first place clubs hook up in a cross division battle. Barnegat Bay enters with the top pitching staff in all of the ABL with timely hitting as the Perfectos are the polar opposite. Titusville’s game plan is to hit the ball hard and often. Hopefully for the Perfectos the ball will travel out of the park with men on base. But keep in mind; the Corsairs have scored more runs that T-Ville 59-56. So far in 2010, this Corsairs club has hit the ball quite well and scored the most run in the American Division. The major difference is on the mound as B-Bay as allowed 38 runs compared to T-Ville’s 55. One thing to note also is the Corsairs bullpen is untested in 2010 and the Perfectos have pitched well out of the pen lead by Doug Mathis and David Robertson. A classic match up early between to the top two teams in the ABL with the MLB start of the season on the horizon. SERIES 2 ATLANTA(4-8) AT BARNEGAT BAY(8-2) SITE: AMANDA LIVE

HEAD TO HEAD: Barnegat Bay leads 6-2

Page 16: Dia5 2010 04 13 - mfooz.com · Title: Microsoft Word - Dia5_2010_04_13.doc Author: Scotty Created Date: 4/13/2010 7:03:49 PM

NOTES: The Inmates will travel to B-Bay after the Corsairs play the Perfectos tonight. Atlanta will need to either call up Luke Hochevar from the taxi team or sign a free agent to pitch game two for the injured Roy Oswalt. Atlanta is coming off a split with Oregon with the ‘Mates played well with a 4-2 in game one and a tough 2-1 loss in 13 innings in the nightcap. The Inmates have scored as many runs as they have given up but have lost four more games. You would usually expect a club with those numbers to have at least a .500 record. Atlanta will have to face a club that has been pitching lights out going into the series with Titusville. Atlanta might have a better idea what they are up against if the Corsairs come out of that series with the pitching in tact. If the Inmates went to get back in the Division race, the time to start winning some division games is now. SERIES 3 SYRACUSE(1-9) AT MANAHAWKIN(3-7) SITE: STEVE LIVE

HEAD TO HEAD: Syracuse leads 4-0 NOTES: The last place and ABL’s worse squad travels to face the 2nd year Pelicans. The Hazard continued their movement of players for draft picks and the future as Jason Bay and Josh Willingham landed in Long Beach Island. That only leaves the 40 old closer in Rivera left on the roster that teams might be interested in. The Pelicans are also finding out that year two is better than year one but it still might take some time to build the ball club. LBI for example had records of 10-18 and 12-16 in their first two years in the league. In fact, it wasn’t until year five the Starfish were able to finally turn things around. Moral of the story is the Pels will need to stay patient and continue to build. Ryan Sweeney, Jamey Carroll, and Miguel Montero are not house hold names that are swinging some good sticks for the Pelicans in year two. The team still does lack power but after trading Bay away the Hazard are not far behind. ‘Cuse has won the previous four meetings; it might be time for the Pelicans to put a W in the win column. SERIES 4 TITUSVILLE(7-3) AT CHICAGO(4-6) SITE: ANT LIVE

HEAD TO HEAD: Tied 4-4 NOTES: T-Ville will head to Chicago packing their “BFH” after finish up with B-Bay tonight. These clubs have played some exciting ball games since Titusville joined the league with each team winning half of their contests. Chicago is chomping at the bit to roll again after sitting out last play week with the bye. Antman is scheduled to join Commish Chat later this week to discuss the bye and how his club looks early in 2010. In early preview of those discussion indicates and under achieving ball club. Joe Mauer is off to a fast start with a .400 average but Nick Swisher and JD Drew are below the .200 mark. More importantly the top guys have been struggling on the bump as Santana and Lee both have an ERA over 5.00 runs per game with only one win between them. If the Gangstas are going to get back into the National Division race, Johan and Lee need to sack up as their manager would say and start pitching with some stones. They’ll get that chance when the high powered first place Perfectos come to down. SERIES 5 TALLAHASSEE(5-7) AT CHESAPEAKE BAY(6-6) SITE: COMMISH ROLLER

HEAD TO HEAD: Chesapeake Bay leads 44-25 NOTES: Tallahassee travels to the Yard to face the Cats in a rematch of the 2009 National Division Semi-finals won by the Terriers four games to two. The Terriers entered the 2010 season in rebuilding mode but after picking up AJ Burnett and Mark Reynolds the Terriers look like a club that can win more

Page 17: Dia5 2010 04 13 - mfooz.com · Title: Microsoft Word - Dia5_2010_04_13.doc Author: Scotty Created Date: 4/13/2010 7:03:49 PM

than ten games in 2010. Tallahassee has already won five and is only a sweep away from reach .500. C-Bay is at .500 only one game ahead of the Terriers and has played like a .500 club all season. The hitting disappeared for the Cats in the series with LBI only scoring two runs total with seven hits. Tallahassee on the other hand scored 12 runs and smacked out 17 hits in week five action. The Terriers have also launched 18 dingers only a couple behind league leader T-Ville. Adam Dunn has been on a tear with 5 jacks with Kendry Morales with 4 shots of his own. The key for both clubs at the moment is their pitching. CC will toe the rubber in game one as the Cats trot out any number of pitchers that have all under performed in 2010 besides 2-1 lefty Wandy Rodriguez. Two historic franchises trying to get back in the race before the big four game set of spring slam arrives. SERIES 6 LAS VEGAS(6-4) AT ORLANDO(7-5) SITE: BUCK ROLLER

HEAD TO HEAD: Las Vegas leads 27-9 NOTES: The Vipers coming off a sweep past the American Division Hazard at the packed MLB Opening Day BBQ travel to face the Sharks. Las Vegas is finally over .500 with the sweep behind their two stud pitchers in Danny Haren and Josh Johnson. The key for the Vipers in this series is for Jamie Shields and Randy Wolf to start pitching better than a 9.00 and 6.75 ERA. The Sharks are looking more and more each week like a team that can contend for the division. The Sharks have a balanced hitting attack and we know they can run. The pitching has been really good of late as Kuroda and the bullpen held Atlanta to only one run over 13 innings of baseball. For whatever reason the Sharks have also showed a lot of passion on the field by getting in several bean wars early on in 2010. The latest battle with Atlanta had each team lose a relief pitcher to suspension and Jair Jurrjens just returning from a bean bull suspension was needed in the bullpen to finish out the game. Historically the Vipers have dominated the Sharks franchise winning 75 percent of the games. The Sharks need to start to reverse that trend if they want to compete for the top spot in the National Division. BYE: LONG BEACH ISLAND(9-3)
