INTROdUCTIONThis is part of a series of bonus items we are developing to bundle in support of our expansions distributed via Steam

Marketplace. The rationale behind these bonus items is that they are more generic and can be bundled with expansion packs to enable correct operation of the main content when used in Train Simulator.

This expansion features an unfitted brake van from the main diagram (1/506) used by British Railways. Built originally with plain bearings and unbraked some lots did receive through vacuum pipes with gauge and control valve for the guard and some were fully vacuum braked. Those vans which managed to survive into the 1970s gained the TOPS code of CAO. The brake van is painted in unfitted grey livery and features randomised lettering, clean and dirty textures and a dynamically smoking version.

ThE ROLLING STOCKThe brake vans included in this pack highlight one of the challenges of creating realistic and accurate representations in model

form for both simulations or a model railway where official records and other sources conflict with each other and photographs of the real thing! The models included conform to photographic evidence and they are all supported by some references in the various research sources used.

The pack includes the unfitted and unpiped variant of the BR 20T brake van based around diagram 1/506 which was a direct descendent of the LNER 20T brake van. All of the brake vans were built at Faverdale (Darlington) and officially lots 2137, 2207, 2350, 2477, 2605 and 2606 numbering some 1,490 vans were built with plain axle boxes, spindle buffers and just a handbrake. As construction progressed various changes took place including lots (or parts of lots) that were vacuum fitted, vacuum piped or fully vacuum braked. Axle boxes were changed from plain to roller and various buffer types were used, but these are outside of the scope of this pack.

As is so often the case changes happened during construction and it is likely that some changes to axleboxes, braking and other features took place that were not fully documented. Once the brake vans were in traffic and were being maintained at a number of locations the variation would have increased even further!

This pack provides a ‘standard’ unfitted brake van that will look perfectly at home at the rear of a goods train from the 1950s through to the early 1970s. However, it should be remembered that they would become increasingly rare towards the end of this period as the need for brake vans decreased and more often than not later built variants were to be seen in traffic.

This work worn dia. 1/506 brake van has gained a metric tare, TOPS code and various other details on black painted panels while the number remains on the bodyside grey paint. The van carries three lamps denoting a partially fitted or unfitted train.

ROLLING STOCK FEATURESWe have developed some new features which are being introduced as appropriate with our range of Marketplace expansions.Although they will happily work away and help to enhance your Train Simulator experience with no specific input some are still

controllable via the scenario editor if you so wish.

INTELLIGENT TAIL LAMPSHistorically we have provided rear versions of our wagons fitted with a tail lamp as we felt that current solutions to automatically

display a tail lamp didn’t really allow the control and versatility we desired. However, through some lateral thinking and perseverance we’ve finally come up with an automatically scripted solution which comes very close to the level of control we required.

The key features of our ‘intelligent’ tail lamp are:

Player services will display a lamp at the rear end and this will move up and down the train as vehicles are coupled/uncoupled.

AI services will display a lamp at rear and this should move up and down as vehicles are added or removed in scenarios

Loose consists will not display any lamps - including portions detached from Player and AI services

Lamps can be prevented from showing on any wagon by adding a N prefix to the vehicle number in the scenario editor either before or after the decal override if this is used

Lamps can be forced to appear in a similar manner by using a Y prefix. (If used with a single vehicle a lamp will appear at one end but the wagon may need to be rotated for the lamp to be where you want it).

AI services with a Service Class of ‘Special’ will not display a lamp and this needs to be forced to appear with a prefix

Loose consists are treated by Train Simulator as ‘Special’, if you wish a tail lamp to appear on one end (or indeed both ends) of such a consist you will need to force it to appear by adding a Y prefix to the relevant wagon(s).

In a free roam scenario, selecting a consist with a Special type to become the player service will enable the lamps as per a normal service.

The colour of the side lamps has been randomised so that either or both of the lamps may be black or white.

Override prefix a : aB952272 Override prefix b : bB951169

Override prefix c : cB952443

In circumstances where the automatic display of a tail lamp is not desired, for example during shunting manoeuvres in a yard, adding a prefix of N to the vehicle number will prevent a tail lamp from being displayed on that vehicle.

Conversely, if a tail lamp is required to be displayed and this does not happen automatically, for example a loose consist left in a siding, adding a prefix of Y will force a tail lamp to be displayed on the outer end of that wagon.

Notes: Due to the way that the script executes when you add prefixes the results will not be shown until you save and reload the scenario.

As these brake vans would normally be found working partially fitted and unfitted trains they will display the three lamps used to denote this type of train by default. However, adding an F prefix to the vehicle number will cause a single lamp for a fitted train to be displayed.

RANdOM LETTERING PANELSThroughout their working life the CAOs gained a selection of different coding styles. We have enabled three different versions

of these coding styles (only two are available on the clean version) based on the most likely period of use for each variation of the brake van to be randomly applied to vehicles when they are placed in game. However, should scenario authors want more control in the lettering displayed this is possible by adding an alphabetical prefix to the vehicle number via the scenario editor.

Examples of four different versions (complete with the override prefix digit and subsequent vehicle number) applied to one variation of the hoppers are:

This feature is further enhanced by adding the following additional prefixes to the vehicle number of the weathered version only:

D - adding a D directly before the B of the vehicle number will signify the brake van is in departmental use and the TOPS code (if displayed) will change to ZTO

x - will prevent a TOPS code from being displayed

t - will force the relevant TOPS code to be displayed

Examples of the effects of these overrides can be seen in the following pictures:

VARIABLE SMOKEThere are some people who would probably say that we should get out more, the only problem is that when we do get out we

look at things and have ideas! There is nothing new in the idea of smoke coming from a brake van stovepipe and we’ve done it with previous models. However,

having seen a brake van in service throughout the day we realised that the smoke isn’t always the same depending on the state of the fire in the stove which is the reasoning behind the variable smoke that has been implemented with this model.

The ‘smoking’ model is designed to work through a pattern of recently lit/stoked, banking down and burning when placed in the simulator over a variable amount of time. When the fire is bring lit/stoked there will be and increasing amount of smoke coming from the stove pipe. As the fire settles down the smoke will lighten in colour and reduce in volume to a gentle grey smoke throughout the burning period. The length of the burning period is randomly assigned to each vehicle as is the point at which it starts in the smoke cycle. This should mean that no two vans are doing exactly the same thing in terms of the smoke they are creating.

FILE NAMINGFILE NAMING OVERVIEw

We have developed a naming structure for our rolling stock based around the following mask:TOPS (Vehicle Type): LIVERY FLAGSFor example one van may be named CAO: Brake Van G W.SThis means it’s a CAO brake van in unfitted grey livery with weathered textures and a smoking stove pipe.

COMPROMISESWith any project you always have to make some compromises and this one has been no exception. We’re not ashamed of the

ones we’ve made and more than happy to tell you about them.

LIVERIESWith any wide ranging fleet of wagons there are always going to be variations brought about by development experiments and

operational changes.Bearing this in mind with the rolling stock we have supplied all the numbers used on vehicles as individuals were hard to pin

down and no doubt changed throughout their operational lives. The liveries and lettering applied are again, a best fit, as every picture shows a variation and the random lettering enabled on the

models will help to create some of this variation.

ThANKSThe production of any product wouldn’t be possible without hard work, support and down right nagging. This pack is no exception and as such it’s only fair to say a big thank you to the families that allow us the time to do this/enjoy

the fact we’re distracted and out of their hair for a bit!The other key element are the testers. It’s safe to say this is probably the best team of testers that’s been encountered for

train simulation projects. They test thoroughly and speedily, communicate well, continually offer opinions and guidance and share the common aim to strive for quality.

We should also thank the guys at Dovetail Games for putting up with us, humouring our wild ‘Is this possible?’ ideas and allowing the opportunity to create ‘official’ expansions!

This is the tenth expansion we’ve managed to get to the point of no return, (ok, release as we’re sick of the sight of it and

releasing is the only way to stop the constant tinkering) so a big thank you should go to our family and friends for their patience and support with our playing trains!
