with Elvira CapreeseLooking back . . . ! Leafing through RPM'sarchives, all the way back to 1964 to write thescript for intro 'ing this year's Big CountryAwards, I came across some very interestinginformation. For instance ... now get this, BobMcAdorey was voted Country Radio Personal-ity in 1968. At the time, he was with CFGM inRichmond Hill. Steve Glenn of CHOK Sarnia, now at CKTY was right behind him in secondplace, followed by CKBY's Ted Daigle. Whoshould be at the Big Country Awards this year, but Steve Glenn. A further check of the ar-chives reveals that Steve was one of the first tosend a "booster" letter to RPM, and, in theDecember 21st issue he reported good actionon two Cancon singles, Bitty Baby by theHoward Sisters and This Old Heart by DustyKing. He was also plugging Dutch's Log Cabinin Port Huron, Michigan as the place to catchtop Canadian and American acts. (EC: BobMcAdorey, Country Radio Personality . . . ?)

It was a family affair . Both the VarietyClub Salute to Canadian music and theBig Country Awards captured the genuinewarmth that makes the Canadian country musicindustry such a closely -knit family. It wasn't acase of being nominated and winning, bothevents were attended, not only by the nomi-nees, but well-known names in the countryfield as well as programmers. They were thereto show support for their industry. (EC: Is therea better way . . . ?)
First class... ? Taking government and otherfunding to lavishly waste on a precipitiouslifestyle, not only does a lot of harm to thoseearmarked for the money, but it gives a blackeye to the industry. (EC: An unpoliceablesituation!!!)After twenty-six years . . . ? When I wasgoing through RPM's archives, one name thatwas a constant on the charts from 1964 wasDick Damron, who was signed to RCA. Outsideof Wilf Carter, Dick is one of the longest -running signings with RCA. Well, the romanceis over. I hear that Dick has signed with ATI forthe release of his new instrumental album titledMirage. The special CD will also include NightMusic, Dick's previous instrumental album. Asfar as his vocal work goes, we'll know moreabout that next month. (EC: That's a lot ofyears . . . !)
Are the bidding wars over ... ? It used tobe, that when one company tried to steal avalued member from another company, theante would go up, and sometimes up again.Well, we're in a recession . . . maybe even adepression, so, thinking is changing. I'd giveany change, regardless of money, a lot ofthought. A cozy nest in a strong oak is far betterthan one in a weeping willow that has roottrouble. (EC: Can you be more ambiguous)
Keep your eye on Ivan ... ! Many said itcouldn't be done, but CBC-TV is surgingahead, proudly waving its Cancon banner.Cancon in prime time is up to 91 percent from84 percent last year. Entertainment ProgramChief Ivan Fecan has a bunch of prettyimpressive productions coming down the pipe.(EC: The mouse that roared . . . ?)

CDs saving the day ... ? The latest figuresfrom CRIA show a 46 percent increase in CDshipments over last month and a 25 percentincrease over last year. Forget the otherconfigurations. (EC: Keep your head in thesand . . . !)

"Pelmorex has devel-oped news and feature programming designedespecially to meet the needs and interests of thepeople in the north," explains Michael Bartoli,Promotions Director for Pelmorex.
Bartoli goes on to point out that Pelmorexwas founded by its president and majorityowner Pierre Morrissette "for the purpose ofacquiring and strenghthening small and me-dium market radio stations across Canada."Morrissette's satellite background began in1983 when he was president and ChiefExecutive Officer of Canadian SatelliteCommunications Inc. (CanCom). During hisfive year tenure the system had grown substan-tially. He resigned in 1989 to form PelmorexCommunications.
The Pelmorex Satellite Network will fo-cus on the production and supply of regionalnews, information and feature programming. These programs will be fed live simultaneouslyto all Pelmorex stations through a technicalarrangement with Novanet of Oshawa.

Rock Radio Networkgoes to air May 24The Rock Radio Network signed on atMidnight, May 24th, with the Overnight Showa six -hour syndicated program.
The proposed launch of Canada's firstexclusively album rock format syndicationservice was announced by the Westcom RadioGroup, its flagship rock affiliate, Toronto'sQ107, and Seltech Broadcast Systems.
"The Rock Radio Network is the nextlogical step in the evolution of radio inCanada," says RRN's Executive ProducerSteve Warden. "In these tough economic times,it's difficult for individual stations to devotethe resources necessary to the running of top-quality programming 24 hours a day."
He continues with, "RRN is a creativealternative. It is also a pretty exciting way tohelp tie together this fractured nation, at a timewhen people, especially the raised -on -rock -n -roll generation, is wondering if this country'sgoing to stay together." He concludes with, "Asense of nation has certainly been part of theCBC's mandate for 50 -odd years; withoutbeing too self-important, The Rock RadioNetwork considers the Canadian identity partof its mandate."
Overnight will be the mainstay of RRN,but a number of other weekly "specialty" pro-grams will round out the network's inauguralschedule. Included are:
The Rock Report: a one -hour rock 'n rollmagazine, featuring interviews, news and in -studio performances with established and newartists;
Superstar Concert Series: which capturessome of the world's top rock acts live, inconcert;
Canada's New Rock: a national showcasefor new talent, featuring demos andindependent releases; and
In The Studio: recalling the making ofclassic rock albums with the producers andartists who recorded them.
RRN will also provide occasional specialsand Album Premiere broadcasts, and is devel-oping several other new radio concepts.
The Rock Radio Network will be deliv-ered via Seltech's C -Band and KU -Band sys-tems on the Anik D1 and Anik Cl satellites, respectively.

COVER STORY - by Pablo Fairhall
George Fox's secret recipeWhoever coined the phrase 'nice guys finishlast' certainly never had country singer/song-writer George Fox in mind. Not only has thisrising star won more awards than you can shakea stick at (including two Junos and a whole slewof Big Country Awards), he's also a very down-to-earth, nice guy, too.
On Sunday, May 26th, Fox took home twomore awards, from the RPM Big CountryAwards, for Top Male Vocalist and for the BestCountry Album, entitled With All My Might. They were awards well deserved.
All this has happened for Fox in a rela-tively short period of time. It was only threeyears ago when he signed an exclusive man-agement deal with Leonard T. Rambeau, ofBalmur Limited who also boast Anne Murrayand Frank Mills, among others, on their roster. That same year, he released his first single andalbum on WEA (now Warner Music Canada). The album was entitled George Fox and thesingle was Angelina. The followup single wasLong Distance.
Fox hails from Cochrane, Alberta, wherehe grew up and worked on his parents ranch. Hecites his first musical influences as the '50sstyle rock of American Grafitti and TV'sHappy Days. It wasn't until he went on anagriculture exchange trip to Sweden, in '81,when he really discovered his love for country. He had taken some country albums with him, some Haggard, Waylon and Willie, at the re-quest of his hosts, but ended up listening tothem himself and really getting in to it. His tastefor country grew even more when, on his timeoff, he would hit the streets and play his tunesfor people passing by. "Busking is the ultimatemarketplace," says Fox, "because you're outthere and if people don't like you, you're leftstanding there with an empty guitar case. Youfind out what goes over with the people and alot of country goes over pretty big." That was it!
Spice Of LifeHe was now hooked on country music.
He returned home from Sweden andstarted playing around the community withlocal musician Jerry Martin. They quicklybecame local favourites. Eventually, Foxstarted writing originals and when he had re-corded some of this original material, it foundits way into the office of WEA" Records andcaught the attention of Bob Roper, then head ofA&R, who signed him to the label.
Shortly after, Fox signed with BalmurLimited. That was 1988 and that same year heopened for Randy Travis on his tour throughWestern Canada. This was the turning point forFox. He had to choose between life on the ranchor a career in music. "There was never anyquestion that this is what I wanted to do," hesays, continuing with, "I put my head down andwent for it. Two and a half years later, I put myhead up and I'm down in music row workingwith one of the top ten producers in Nashvilleand there's not a cow in sight."
The cows loss is our gain. Fox's newalbum, the follow up to his 1989 gold -plussuccess, With All My Might, is entitled SpiceOf Life. It is his finest yet and it should gain him
many more fans throughout North America. The album was produced by Nashville veteranGarth Fundis, who has worked with DonWilliams, New Grass Revival and KeithWhitley, and recorded in both Toronto andNashville. Fox wrote the title track and co -wrote three of the tunes. The album also fea-tures songs by top Nashville writers RogerFerris, Rory Bourke, Charlie Black, Bob DiPiero and John Scott Sherrill. Fox says it wasquite an experience to work with such giftedsongwriters, but says there's almost too manygood songwriters in Nashville. "They shouldput a sign up on the city limits saying 'no moresongwriters, we've got enough', " he jokes.
Also included is the Buck Owens tune

Extremely successful! A new No. 1 songthis week. After two weeks at the top, RodStewart's Rhythm Of My Heart is replaced byExtreme's More Than Words. The album hasalso been boosted by the exposure from MoreThan Words. Pomograffitti climbs to No. 11 onthe Albums chart.
What's for dessert . . . The Jeff HealeyBand's How Much has this week's highestdebut on the Hit Tracks chart. It enters at No.53. That's 23 places higher than CrowdedHouse's Chocolate Cake. It will be against theodds in it's bid to reach the top. Only one songwith a dessert title has ever hit No. 1. Somepeople may think of Red Red Wine or Brandy, but only food dessert counts. Name the onlysong with a dessert title to Hit No. 1.
A Challenge at the top. R.E.M. has held thetop album for five weeks now and it's tough topredict how long it will stay there. Rod Ste -wart's Vagabond Heart has been close for a fewweeks, and now Michael Bolton's Time, Love& Tenderness is gaining quickly. Time . . .
climbs to No. 4.
Two in a row! For the second week in a row, there is a debut on the Albums chart in the Top30. Paul McCartney's Unplugged (The OfficialBootleg) enters at No. 29. It has already gonehigher than his previous album. Tripping theLive Fantastic peaked at No. 33 last year. Hislast studio album, Flowers In The Dirt, enteredat No. 55 and peaked at No. 16 in July of 1989.
Standing the test of time. Wilson Phillipsself -titled debut album slips to No. 20 thisweek. It marks the 46th week in the Top 20.That's one week more than MC Hammer'sPlease Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em spent. Bycomparison, the No. 1 album of 1990, SineadO'Connor's I Do Not Want What I Haven'tGot, only spent 32 weeks in the Top 20. 1989'sTop album, Fine Young Cannibals' The RawAnd The Cooked, was there for 38 weeks.Wilson Phillips have a long way to go if theyare to catch the top album of 1988. INXS' Kickspent an amazing 61 weeks in the Top 20.
Hot soundtrack ... Just six months ago therewere seven soundtracks on the Albums chart. This week, New Jack City debuts at No. 56 tobecome just the third soundtrack on the chart. One of the reasons for the success of the albumis the track I Wanna Sex You Up by Color MeBadd. It is the hottest mover on the Hit Trackschart, jumping 33 spots to No. 50.
A trip down Baker Street. There haven'tbeen many songs with a dessert title to even getnear the top let alone reach it. Songs like:Brown Sugar, Honey and Sugar Sugar are in-gredients but only Don McLean's AmericanPie qualifies. Although if you guessed it, I'llgive you The Osmonds' One Bad Apple!

Comprised of LucasJanklow (lead guitar and vocals), GerryStanek (bass guitar), Frank Araneo(drums) and Nate Schrock (guitar andbackups), this quartet plays somerough n' ready stuff in the style of earlyZZ Top. ONE FREE FALL -Rock,Quoc-teCapital C4 96500-F
One Free Fall makes a strong debut onthis specially -priced EP/Mini-LP con-taining five songs that exploit the band'sraw energy. Formerly from Halifax andnow Toronto -based, this quartet con-sists of Ken MacNeil, Jim Moore, SandyGraham and Rob Gazes. MacNeil'svocals are true grit; the best of Guns N'Roses and the Red Hot Chili Pepperscombined. Garth Richardson takesproduction credits. He has worked withthe Chilli Peppers, Whitesnake and Al-ice Cooper among others and his influ-ence is felt here. Released on Capitol inCanada and SBK in the States, thesetracks lean towards AOR/CAR and thefirst single is Pontius. The accompany-ing video was directed by Roy Pike(Bootsauce, The Box, etc.). Look At Meis another strong track that deservesmention from these hard-core rockers.(Cassette reviewed) - PF
TENNANT - RockWhere Do I Go From HereHomestead'HDI-912
This is an independent release from anEdmonton band that deserves mention.Headed by Rick Tennant, who writes, sings and plays Hammond B3, thisgroup puts out a refreshing blend of
R&B flavoured Rock. Productioncredits go to Allen James Music. Theproduction is smooth and there aresome strong horn lines that'll grab ya.I've Been Lonely is a heartfelt balladwith a very catchy melody. Other cutsare more on the rockier side; Down OnLove, Back On Track and Goin' ForThe Glory being noteworthy.(CD reviewed) - PF
GEORGE FOX - CountrySpice Of LifeWEA-74422-P
We have a slightly different side ofGeorge Fox with this package. He hasharnessed the writer strength of somepretty good Nashville writers. The titletrack, taken as the first single, is a good
example, written by Rory MichaelBourke, Charlie Black and Fox, andprobably the fastest breaking single inFox's career. The album was recordedat Toronto's Eastern Sound with a littleembellishment at Nashville's SoundEmporium. The influence of outsidewriters makes a big difference.Experienced songwriters have tradi-tionally been the key to success, andFox could do it with another couple ofkey tracks, I Know Where You Go,written by Roger Ferris, the Kostas/Harry Stinson penning of EverythingAbout You, and Here Today, HereTomorrow, written by Fox, Bob Di Pieroand John Scott Sherrill. The timing forthis release was perfect. Fox won twoBig Country Awards (May 26/91) forBest Album and Top Country MaleVocalist. This album was produced byGarth Fundis, who has worked withDon Williams and New Grass Revival.(CD reviewed) - WG
THE BELLAMYBROTHERSRollin' ThunderAtlantic - 22324-P
- Country
David and Howard Bellamy continue tomake chart inroads with each release. This set was produced by the brotherteam and Ron Taylor. The Bellamyshave a natural feel for traditional coun-try with a contemporary flair, there's nodenying their country roots, even if theyare from Florida. There's nothing reallyexciting here, what can you do with an
established sound? They have alreadycaught the fancy of country program-mers with She Don't Know That She'sPerfect, the new single which got off totheir usual good chart action. Also keyare Down To You and All In The NameOf Love. (CD reviewed) - WG
VIOLENT FEMMES - AlternativeWhy Do Birds Sing?Slash/Reprise - CD 26476
From Culture Club's 1982 smash, DoYou Really Want To Hurt Me?, to aninteresting revision of Hey NonnyNonny, Violent Femmes have surelycarved a niche for themselves on theleading edge of the alternative musicgenre. Self -produced, the Femmesdeliver very eclectic arrangementswhich are, for the most part, performedacoustically. The trio, Gordon Gano,Brian Ritchie and Victor DeLorenzo, have been known as very talentedmusicians and this collection will notdisappoint their fans. Already pickingup lots of alternative radio play, Why DoBirds Sing should continue to do well onthat format as well as college and uni-versity stations, however, there's notmuch chance of a crossover 'hit'
here.(CD reviewed) - RW
SHEENA EASTON -Dance/popWhat Comes NaturallyMCA - MCAD 10131-J
This follow-up to her 1988 gold album,The Lover In Me, combines an
excellent mix of high energy dancesongs and heart -wrenching ballads. This is Easton's ninth album but her firsttime recording songs that she has co -written. Her self-confidence and self-expression really come through whichis evident by her maturing writing talent. The title track is the first single whileother highlights include First Touch,The Next Time and If You Wanna KeepMe. The album is produced by a finecast of talented producers and writersincluding David Frank, Oliver Lieberand Ian Prince. What Comes Naturallyshould gain lots of radio attention andwe'll expect to see it charting very soon.

It's been five years since we've heardanything from Montreal rocker AldoNova, but the wait has been worth it.Jingles, commercials and working withBon Jovi on his Blaze Of Glory projectkept him busy and filled those years. Now released on Bon Jovi's new label,Jam bco Records, he's put out a power-ful rocker which he co -produced withBon Jovi at Le Studio in Morin Heights. The title track is the firstsingle slated forradio. It is an sobering look at gang

Medicine Man and Bang Bangare straight -ahead rockers that propelthis album. Not one to forget you ro-mantics out there, Nova has added twoballads, Someday and Hey Ronnie(Veronica's Song). Greenwood has hung his manhood outto dry completely with this albumproduced by Jerry Crutchfield. Tentracks, ten duet partners, all female. The vocal magic of Greenwood is stilldominant however, but the purr -effecthe gets on each track offers an extra bitof ear pleasure. Key is his coupling withSuzzy Bogguss on Hopelessly Yours.the first track taken as a single. He isalso coupled with Carol Chase, KarenStaley, Tanya Tucker, Donna McElroy,Marie Osmond, Lalcy J. Dalton, CeeCee Chapman, and the female quartet,of Wild Rose. There's a little bit ofeverything here from gospel to

They're wacky! They're nutty! They'reFishbone! They are also one of themost under -rated bands to come alongin years. Hopefully, their newest effortwill change all that because theseseven dudes deliver a sound that's bothfunky and down right crazy at the sametime. Rock, Jazz, Funk and Punk aremixed into this self -produced album(with additional production kudos goingout to David Kahne), adding up to aroller -coaster ride you just don't want tostop. The eighteen songs relentlesslyspeed along as they set your mindspinning and your feet grinning. Sun-less Saturday is the current single/video and deals with pain and hope-lessness. The music touches manyIssues that are pertinent In today's so-ciety such as youth alienation and drugabuse. Canadian Country Music Industry Event of the Year
Big Country honours artists and broadcastersThis year's Big Country Awards, held atToronto's Harbour Castle Westin Hotel (May26), once again honoured Canada's domesticcountry recording artists and broadcasters. This was also the first year that a sponsor tooksome of the financial load off the awards.Maclean Hunter Country Radio sponsored theawards dinner (RPM - June 1/91), and manage-ment staff and on -air personalities from severalmember stations were on hand for the event. The Maclean Country Radio group comprisesToronto's Country59, CKTY Sarnia, CKBYOttawa, Kitchener's CKGL, CHYRLeamington, CFQM Moncton, CHFX Halifaxand Charlottetown's CHLQ.
The evening began with a cocktail party, which resembled a homecoming. There was anelectrifying and warm feeling as first yearnominees mingled with winners and nomineesfrom years past. There was a friendly network-ing of record company executives representingA&R, marketing, sales and promotion depart-ments from major and independent labels, music directors, program directors and execu-tives from country radio.
The awards dinner itself was the talk ofthe evening. From the orange and pumpkinsoup, through the Caesar salad with babyshrimps and garlic croutons to the roast primerib of beef and the fresh strawberries a l' orange,a culinary masterpiece prepared by the HarbourCastle Westin's Executive Chef, ReudiBlattler. This year was also memorable in that

Big Country returned to a hotel managed byone of the hotel industry's most popular execu-tives, Bob McCauley, General Manager of theHarbour Castle Westin. It was the convention/hotel expertise and generosity of McCauleyduring the sixties, that assisted Stan Klees andWalt Grealis, founders of the Juno and BigCountry Awards in their quest to present theseawards in a setting conducive to suchpersonality -oriented events.
This year's presenters of the Big CountryAwards were truly representative of Canada'scountry music industry, coupling country's
