A Word From Our President A Message From Our COO

May / June 2020 May / June 2020

Hello All, I hope all of you are doing well. While I certainly will not say that things are back to normal from COVID-19, I will say that business, freight, and certain parts of trucking are much better than they were in April and May. A lot of uncertainty remains with the virus and how people, states, and government are dealing with it or will deal with it in the future. It has certainly been a roller coaster ride from March until now.In March we experienced the best month that DHT ever had and the next month was the worst month we had ever experienced! May improved slightly over April (not by much) and BOOM! We saw June come back to what felt like things were Pre-COVID. I know many of you, like me, were probably very concerned of what was next and where was bottom. While they were some trying times, we did pull through it together. I want to thank all of you for the patience and professionalism that you displayed through the time of uncertainty. We certainly do not know what lies ahead or what is around the next curve, but we do know that it is

much improved, and we will just have to take it as it comes.Recently, Carey Pritt and I made a trip to all the terminals from Mtn City to Laredo, El Paso, Nogales, and Phillipsburg. In between the terminals we made stops at the KW Dealerships that we work with from a maintenance perspective. Our focus was to build relationships with the Branch Managers and Service Managers. We feel by building these relationships we will be able to get better and faster service when we do have to go into a dealership for mechanical issues. While we were making these visits many of the dealers commented on the professionalism of our drivers. I certainly had not doubt when I heard this, but I did feel and am extremely proud of all of you that represent our DHT Family. Thank you!It was a pleasure to see several of our drivers as we made our visits to the terminals and for those of you that we didn’t see at the terminals, but met or passed out on the road, it was good to see you too. Everyone that we saw out on the road was doing a good and safe job and we all appreciate you. I guess I forgot to mention that we did drive on this road trip. All in all, we covered 4800 miles in about 12 days of driving and several meetings later. In closing I want to thank all of you for what you do for DHT, the professionalism that you display and for being a part of our family. I pray that God blesses each of you and keeps you safe in every mile that you travel!Keep on Trucking Safely!Joe

With the first part of 2020 behind us, I can honestly say the experience has been unlike any year I have seen. Who could have imagined as we started the year, that we would have faced so many obstacles? You need to go back to 2009 to come close to the upheaval we have experienced with the economy. With this said, I am hopeful that the worst is past, and we can start to regain our

footing in the second half of the year. April and May were horrific months and in June we finally started to see some positives. As I write that line, I am concerned that by the time this newsletter is printed and distributed, things may have changed again. 2020 has taught us to expect the unexpected and be prepared to roll with whatever is thrown at us.Until this virus is under control, I want to encourage everyone to take common sense steps to protect yourselves and those around you. I know there are many differing opinions on this but in the most basic sense we need to maintain distance from others and be overly

cautious if you feel ill with symptoms of the disease. Better safe than sorry when it comes to assuming in this case.If we can all work together to lessen the effects of the virus, the second half of 2020 is projected to be very good for our industry. At DHT, we will use this recovery to not only get back to 2019 freight levels but to also improve. We will not be growing the Fleet for the remainder of the year by any truck count and will concentrate on becoming stronger when it comes to the miles we can provide. As most of you know, we are asking everyone to move away from using the TripPak drop boxes when turning in paperwork. You can now utilize your smartphone, Kiosks at participating truck stops, or simply have the attendant in the truck stop scan your paperwork for you. This has been planned for some time by most companies such as Transflo, but the speed of the change will be quicker to eliminate the need to handle paperwork multiple times. We appreciate your adaptation to this and are here to assist anyone that has questions.I wish each of you the best for the rest of the year and please stay healthy out there on the road.Blake

Summer is Here

May / June 2020 May / June 2020

Hello, all DHT drivers, I hope this newsletter finds all of you and your families well.Looks like summer is here, hot weather, rain and thunderstorms are upon us. If you run into rain and/or windy conditions, please slow down. As you know our nation’s roads are not in the best shape and standing water in the ruts

or on the roadway will cause you to hydroplane. It does not take much water for hydroplaning to occur. The biggest problem is you usually do not get any warning, it just happens and then suddenly you have no control over the vehicle. To protect yourself, and our equipment and freight, slow down to prevent hydroplaning. The wind can also be a big problem this time of year. High wind can blow a large profile vehicle around, not to mention dust storms as well as other debris. Use caution in these situations and as always if it gets too bad get off the highway to a safe location until it is safe to continue. We just ask that you contact dispatch and let them know where you are and the conditions so we can advise other drivers to avoid the area until things improve.

We have seen a small increase in our CSA scores lately. Now that states are opening back up and people are getting back to work, traffic and DOT enforcement are catching up on lost time. We are seeing a few more inspections as well. Our inspection value score is still low (that is a good thing.) We are currently at 28 which is in the pass range, by a lot! 1 – 49 is pass, 50 – 74 is optional and 75 and above is inspect. This is what DOT sees when we come in the scale and they mostly use that to pick out the ones they want to inspect. We do not normally get pulled unless there is a noticeable defect like a flat or low tire, bad air leak or one or more lights not working. That is one reason we ask you to do the proper pre-trip and post-trip inspection. Not only does that help us not getting pulled into the scale, but also will keep you off the side of the road waiting for a service truck. Please make sure you are inspecting your equipment every day to avoid these issues. As I mentioned above, while checking your equipment, it is also important to check the air pressure in your tires. You all know how hard the hot weather is on tires. They do not have to be flat, just a tire with low pressure will build up more heat and fail. Use a good tire gauge if possible. Walking around and kicking or hitting your tires with a tire thumper is not going to tell you if that tire is 10 or 20 lbs. low on air. Please use a gauge to help limit

tire failures and downtime on the side of the road.As we talk more about hot weather, you also need to take extra care of yourself. Keep plenty of water on hand to keep from getting dehydrated. Try to eat heathy and get plenty of rest. The heat can take a lot out of you without realizing how dehydrated you have become. We want you to stay safe, healthy, and rested.Until we meet again, thank you for what you do and drive safe.Steve FrantzVP of Safety

Freight is UP!Hello drivers! Freight volumes are up significantly over what we had seen over the last couple of months during the COVID-19 pandemic! During those challenging times, many of our regular customers were forced to shut down for extended periods, so we hauled a great deal of freight that doesn’t necessarily fit

the DHT footprint just to keep everyone rolling to the best of our ability. Fortunately, as of this writing, all of our regular business is now open and in full swing. For that we are truly grateful. As we get busier, I’d like to ask everyone to focus on our service. If, for any reason, you are running late for a pickup or delivery, notify dispatch ASAP. Many times, when we are running behind, the driver is doing all he/she can legally do and we understand. We just need to be proactive in communicating delays to the customer so that they can plan accordingly.

As I am sure you have seen on many load assignments, a face mask, or covering, is now required at many shippers and receivers. We do our best to update the requirements in our system as we learn of them but there may be some that have not been brought to our attention. To err on the side of caution, please wear your face coverings at any customer site unless told it is not required. In addition, please continue to social distance to the best of your ability, wash your hands as much as possible and continue following all safety guidelines provided.Lastly, I would like to ask that everyone utilize the trash containers available at our terminals when cleaning out your trucks and trailers. We want to keep our properties looking as nice and professional as possible. Your help in this goes a long way.Thank you for keeping America moving—be safe, and God Bless!Brian MorefieldVP of Operations

DANNY HERMAN TRUCKING, INC.May / June 2020

I hope this newsletter finds all of you and your families doing well. As I write this, Joe and I have just finished up a twelve-day road trip. The purpose

of this trip was for me to visit our DHT shops, but also to visit with some of our Kenworth dealerships to build our relationship with these companies. When this trip was complete, we had visited and held meetings with 14 dealerships and their management teams across six states. These meetings went well, and I feel we will benefit in building a better relationship with these dealerships. These relationships will hopefully grow stronger with time and will help you, the driver, and DHT with less downtime and a better experience overall.I enjoyed the windshield time while

traveling to our shops and meeting our team members. Some I have known for many years and some I was meeting for the first time. These techs work hard everyday to keep you and the DHT fleet rolling and do a great job. Sure, mistakes happen, but most of the time they get the job done quickly and done right. As a driver, I am sure you understand how it feels when a shipper or customer shows that they appreciate your efforts. I know from sitting in the driver’s seat myself it does not happen often, but you remember the ones that do. So, the next time a shop or tech does a good job for you, take a moment to let them know. I am sure it will brighten their day.We are now into the summer months and temperatures are breaking 100 degrees out west and in the mid-west. This means tire failures have increased and so has our costs in Maintenance. We need your help with a good pre-trip,

in-route, and post-trip inspections every day. With good inspections we can catch most tire and other maintenance issues before you are stuck on the side of the road. If you find an issue, please call into Maintenance as soon as you spot it so we can address it and figure out a plan to resolve it.In closing, I want to thank our drivers and your families for what you do for us here at DHT. Being a truck driver has never been easy, but the last few months with the closing of restaurants, shippers, receivers, and the other chaos, I am sure it has been some of the toughest times ever for you. So, thank you all for toughening it out and for pounding that asphalt everyday with DHT on your door.Be safe and God Bless.Carey Pritt, Director of MaintenanceCarey PrittDirector of Maintenance

Thank You DHT ShopsThe worst thing that could happen to anyone whether in a regular car or semi-truck is having a tire blowout! Your recommended PSI is what your tire pressure should be before you start driving. It just so happens, that summer is also the season for tire blowouts. Yes, it’s true! Heat makes air expand which leads to increased tire pressure. Because of this, people

assume that they should underinflate their tires. That is incorrect! Underinflating tires is what causes a blowout. Underinflation decreases the amount your truck can carry. Ensure valve caps are on each tire to avoid unnecessary deflation and air hoses are hooked to the trailer tires.Four major problems you could experience during the hot days of summer are cooling system issues, reduced tire pressure, electrical failure, and air conditioner efficiency. There are some tasks you can

complete yourself when doing your pre-trip inspection before driving the truck: Inspect radiator cap and coolant levels, hoses and lines for corrosion, visually check for possible leaks and check your cabin filters to ensure in-cab cooling.Always inspect the other components that keep you safe on the road as well including the windshield and wiper blades, headlamps, tail lamps, turn signals and hazard lights, fire extinguisher and triangle kit.Remember, in extreme heat your truck’s components may suffer mechanical issues. Noting the condition of your tires, brakes, and vehicle engine fluid levels are three vital components to the pre- and post- inspection.Thank You All and be Safe,Scott WemhoffDirector of Maintenance

#10 “Well, how ‘bout that? I’m lost! Looks like we’ll have to stop and ask for directions.”

#9 “You know Pumpkin, now that you’re thirteen, you’ll be ready for un-chaperoned car dates. Won’t that be fun?”

#8 “I noticed that all your friends have a certain hostile attitude. I like that.”

And the number one thing you’ll never hear a dad say:

#1 “What do I want for Father’s Day? Aahh—don’t worry about that. It’s no big deal.” (actually they might say this, but they don’t mean it.)

Get Rid of Dad? The children begged for a hamster,

and after the usual fervent vows that they alone would care for it, they got

one. They named it Danny. Two months later, when Mom found

herself responsible for cleaning and feeding the creature, she located a

prospective new home for it.

The children took the news of Danny’s imminent departure quite well,

though one of them remarked, “He’s been around here a long time–we’ll

miss him.”

“Yes,” Mom replied, “But he’s too much work for one person, and since I’m that one person, I say he goes.”

Another child offered, “Well, maybe if he wouldn’t eat so much and wouldn’t

be so messy, we could keep him.”

But Mom was firm. “It’s time to take Danny to his new home now,” she

insisted. “Go and get his cage.”

With one voice and in tearful outrage the children shouted, “Danny? We

thought you said Daddy!”

A Mother’s Love7 All About Dad 8

A Mother’s Love by Martha Noebel The first Mother’s Day was celebrated in West Virginia in 1912. Mothers were to be recognized as an important part of our culture and lives. The heart of a mother is like a rare jewel. They love their children during the worst and best of times. Yet all mothers are not the same. Author and speaker Patsy Clairmont says, “Normal is just a setting on your clothes dryer.” We are all different. She shared that as women we may “struggle, fail, start over, and celebrate.” But we are mothers who can love unlike any other person. God created families and gave mothers a unique place in that unit. We can love, give of ourselves, cook, clean, wash clothes, put Band-Aids on scrapes … be the first one up in the morning or the last one down at night. We juggle a lot of things including raising children, working at jobs, managing a home, and sometimes finding time for ourselves. Each day is a new beginning of what lies before us. We have destiny, purpose, and the power to do and be all that we are called to be. Nothing can stop us except ourselves. As mothers, we need to find the strength to face each day knowing that God loves us. This scripture seems to be written just for mothers.

“Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." (Philippians 2:1-4 NIV) Our children need that unselfish love of a mother. We, as mothers, need to love our mothers too. Long life is promised to all who show honor to them. “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. "Honor your father and mother." This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, "things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth." (Ephesians 6:1-3 NLT) Mothers make up a crucial part of our lives. So whether it is a Hallmark card, dinner out, hug, or a kiss on the cheek, we should show we care. It is so important to give our love to these dedicated women in our lives and don’t take them for granted. “Dear children, let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.” (1 John 3:18 NLT)

Several years ago, I began serving as Chaplain for the DHT family. I have served other companies through Market Place Chaplains, but I can say, without hesitation, that my greatest joy has been to serve Danny Herman Trucking. I have been blessed to come into your offices on a weekly basis and to get to know each of you. I have also had the joy of talking with many of your drivers, many of whom I have never seen. You have all been so very nice to me.Now it is time for me to say goodbye. I feel God is leading me to another area of service, and I really want to be where God wants me to be. Jesus said, “the fields are white to harvest”

and there is so much to do in these days. So now, what do you say when you are saying goodbye? I have been thinking about this since I made the decision to leave MPC and especially DHT. What do I say to such a wonderful group as you? I came as a chaplain to try to be a blessing to you, but I have received the greater blessing. It is not easy to say goodbye to folks who have become friends and more

importantly friends in Christ. In saying goodbye, I want to use The Apostle Paul’s words from Ephesians 6:10-20. Paul said goodbye quiet often to churches he had visited on his missionary journeys.

Here is what he said to the Ephesians:“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.” Ephesians 6:10-20 KJV
