The Centennial Class of 1951 Celebrates 65th ReunionMembers of the Class of 1951, the Centennial Class, celebrated their 65th reunion on Sept. 15, 2016, with a luncheon at the Walpole Country Club. Twenty classmates recalled graduation day, June 8, 1951—the 100th DHS graduation.

DHS Class of 1954 Classmates,Our recent 80th birthday party celebration held at Jeanne Flannery's home in Dedham was a great success!! The party was held in tents on the lawn in back of Jeanne's home. There were 40 people in attendance, including classmates, spouses and friends. The afternoon was spent chatting about old times and reacquainting ourselves with classmates, some of whom we have not seen for a number of years. A great time was had by all. I am attaching a few pictures for you, one of which shows the group together. The balloons being released into the blue sky by the classmates was a memorial to our classmates who are no longer with us. On to the 65th reunion in three years! -Allan Haynes

100th Anniversary of Dedham High Scholarships

Did you know that Charles Dunbar Class of 1851 was among the first graduates to pay his $1.50 dues to The Alumni Association? And, in the recently discovered Alumni Minutes from 1900-1919, we found at the DHS Alumni Association meeting in 1912, a motion was made and voted to appoint a Scholarship Committee to assist worthy students in their first year of college. In 1913, there was $75 in the fund and the first record of a scholarship awarded was in 1917 for $40!

We have certainly come a long way. Each year, the DHS Alumni Association funds three scholarships: one to a June graduate of DHS; the second to a child or grandchild of a DHS alum who graduated from a school other than Dedham High, and, the third to a former graduate who is returning to school or entering a career advancement program. In addition, the Alumni Association has served as the vehicle by which other scholarships can be awarded.

For example, there is an annual Francis J. Dunne Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by Anne Dunne (1969) in memory of her father. A second scholarship is the Class of 1963 Scholarship in Memory of Kelly Krug Class of 1995, which is sponsored by an anonymous donor. And, in June of 2017, with donations from friends made to the Alumni Association in memory of John Lane (1967) the John Lane Memorial Scholarship will be awarded. A committee from the Alumni Board reviews the scholarship applications and selects the most deserving recipients for each scholarship.

To continue providing annual scholarships long into the future, the Association has also established and annually funded a Scholarship Endowment Account. June 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of scholarship awards at Dedham High.

In celebration of this anniversary, we would like to increase the Endowment Fund. So if you received a scholarship when you graduated or if you just want to add to the fund please send your check to the Alumni Association and write Scholarship Fund on the memo line.

The Alumni Association has not only been a proud sponsor of several annual scholarships, but it has also supported many other DHS programs over the last 15 years. The Association has presented two yearly Outstanding Alumni Awards, created a bi-annual newsletter, funded and coordinated the digitizing of all the yearbooks, and supported Dedham High programs such as the All Night Party, the Senior Play, the Athletic Hall of Fame,

The Alumni Association has been a key contributor to the DHS Football Field’s transformation.

the Media Film Festival, among others. The Association raised over $200,000 for the Athletic Complex Lights and created the brick Walk of Fame. It also raised money for the following DHS initiatives: the Marching Band equipment and uniforms, the piano fund, microphones for drama and musical performances, weight room equipment, wood shop equipment, a digital camera for the photography class, a robotics lab kit and a display case for the library..

Dedham Youth Commission Summer Interns

Help Alumni AssociationThis summer, two student interns spent a day moving alumni yearbooks into storage. The books, pictures, and prom favors needed to be moved to other storage closets on site to make room for Art Room expansion at DHS. Twins, Jason and Jeffrey Toussaint are current Juniors at Dedham High . They were made available through the Dedham Youth Commission Summer Work Program.

The paid internship program is largely financed through the Youth Commission Bowling Fundraiser held annually at Kings at Legacy Place. The Alumni Association, through your generous support, participates in the fundraiser as it ultimately benefits DHS students and future Alumni! This year’s team included Alumni Association Board Members: Amy Banik Auger, Lauren Perna and Anne-Marie Miskunas.

Alumni Share Insight

with Foreign Language

StudentsIn the spring, four Dedham High alums spoke with foreign language students about their careers that require them to use their French/Spanish skills. The event was coordinated by Alison Guifaro, Head of the Foreign Language Department at DHS, who said, “The alumni were fabulous! It was great to see them so passionate about their careers in French/Spanish.”

Callahan-Longo Encourages Grads to be BoldOn June 4th, Dedham High Class of 2016 graduated 183 students. Music and entertainment executive Lee Anne Callahan-Longo, a 1986 graduate of Dedham High, took to the stage as the keynote speaker. After her days at DHS, Lee Ann went on to Boston College. She began her career as a publicist, and then went on to marketing in the radio industry. From there she handled promotions at Atlantic Records, which moved her to NYC. She went on to Columbia Records, and in 2007 she joined Music World Entertainment, where she started working with Beyonce. In 2011, she became executive vice president of Parkwood Entertainment, the management, music and production company founded by Beyonce, where she stayed until early 2016. Before she was jet-setting around the world with Beyonce, Longo admitted that she didn’t have it figured out. She told students: “Find what you enjoy and make it your career. When you find something you’re passionate about set goals, visualize and reach them.” This attitude is what propelled Longo forward in her career. She emphasized that life is a journey, not a destination and the path to success has its ups and downs. She affirmed that the biggest mistakes can hold the best lessons and “No matter how bad it is, it’ll pass.”

She gave students practical pointers, like ask questions, look for mentors and find people that you admire and have the job you want. But, perhaps the most resounding message from Longo was: “Be fearless. Be bold. Be like Beyonce.” Longo said this means to have faith, work hard and put everything in. And it also means to be caring and kind because how you treat people and who you spend time with is so critical to who you are as a person. She wrapped up by reminding students that the people who support you and love you are who really matter. And Longo proved that will always be the case, as her mother and sister were sitting in the audience cheering her on.

Lauren Perna (2000) and Nancy Clement with Lee Anne Callahan-Longo in the Alumni Room before her keynote address to the class of 2016

The Alumni Association once again funded the DHS Library membership in the Massachusetts Digital Commonwealth. By joining this group we were able to complete the digitization of almost all yearbooks through 2015. Thanks to the Dedham Historical society for loaning us the very elusive 1958 yearbook to add to the collection.

The 2000 yearbook did not make it, but will be added soon. The site can be accessed at: https://archive.org/details/dedhamhighschoollibrary

Sellout Trivia Night is a Fight to the Finish

Do you have what it takes to win in 2017? Save the Date for the 3rd Annual Trivia Night! March 25, 2017 @ The American Legion. Doors open at 6pm. For tickets,

tables or sponsorships please contact Nancy Clement at [email protected] or Bob Crisp at [email protected]

March 17, 2016 was the Second Annual Trivia Night at the American Legion. Superintendent Mike Welch was once again the exuberant emcee, while his wife Karoline kept impeccable score, and Bob Stanley kept the music going through the night. The event was once again a sellout, but there was a new twist this year—tables were invited to dress up in a theme for extra points added to their scores. Some of the themes were: School’s Out for the Summer with sand-pails and all. The Music Association Team was called bSharps and each wore their favorite musical group shirt. The Bingo Boosters table donned bingo cards. The Dedham Track & Field Team wore their track suits, while the Dedham Bandits were dressed to steal the game. Team Tahiti dressed like they were going to the tropical island, but instead brought dinner from the restaurant of the same name right down the street. Other teams cleverly played to Dedham’s roots like the Shiretownies and Team Tiot. Some questions the crowd knew immediately, like: what beloved Dedham tradition will turn 50 in 2017? Answer: the Flag Day Parade. Other questions were only answered by the savviest of Dedham townies, like this 2-parter: What Dedham Police Officer was in the Guinness Book of World Records and for what event? Former Chief Mike Weir and the entry into Guinness Book was for throwing a grape into the mouth of a Boston Produce Manager, Paul Tavilla. Trivia Night was a fight to the finish, but it was Team Tahiti who walked away winners. While they took home the trophy, the big winners were the students of Dedham High. The event raised $12,000. After expenses, the proceeds were split between the event co-sponsors, the Boosters Club and the Alumni Association: thus far $2,000 went to the band and $5,000 went to new equipment for the weight room.

Sometimes good people go to jail. This is so true for Carol (Driscoll) Parillo (1950). Carol, a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Mary's Parish, was recently honored by Sheriff Michael Bellotti with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work with inmates in the Norfolk County House of Correction. She believes she has spent almost 24,000 hours volunteering in her 38 years working with inmates to break the cycle of crime.

We recently heard from Nicholas Tracy (1951). After graduation, he worked in Boston and attended Harvard for 2 years before moving to the West Coast. His entire career was spent as a ship handler and pilot. Nick retired in 2014 from the Washington State Ferry System. Nick lives in Tacoma.

Bob Elmer (1965) has donated a copy of his book, Join the Journey, to the DHS Alumni Authors Corner. The book is a collection of articles he wrote designed to address the many challenges professional and non-professional caregivers face in caring for a person with Alzheimer's. The book has received excellent reviews and is available from Outskirts Press, Denver, Colorado, and on Amazon.

Congratulations to Lois Lovely (1966). She was recently honored by Dedham Institution for Savings, for her 50 years of continuous and outstanding service. Lois is Vice President of Marketing. She has long been an active member of the Alumni Association and was selected as one of Dedham High's Outstanding Alumni.

Partners In Health annually recognizes individuals and teams who have contributed to the success of Partners Health Care. This year Jennifer (Ekbomb) Sybertz (1996) was nominated by her colleagues and received the Teamwork Award for her work at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
