Over the past 150 years, industrialization has significantly contributed to the progress of society.
But it has come at a price.
BetteR City, BetteR life – the expO Shanghai 2010
its twin brother, urbanization, has drawn ever more people
to urban areas in pursuit of work, better health care, better
education, a better life. while only 13 percent of the world’s
population lived in cities in 1900, their percentage has risen
over the years to 29 percent in 1950 and 46 percent in 2000.
Since 2008, for the first time in human history, more people
have been living in cities than in the country. in 2050, urban
dwellers will make up almost 70 percent of the world’s
population. 1
the price of industrialization is the negative impact on
our natural environment. the effects of the exploitation
of natural resources, the ever-increasing hunger for
energy, and the shortsighted disposal of industrial
waste are particularly noticeable in urban areas.
under the motto “Better City, Better life”, the expo
Shanghai 2010 has made urbanization its central theme.
from 1 May to 31 October 2010, the biggest ever expo, with
240 countries and organizations exhibiting on
5.4 km2, tries to give answers to the most pressing
questions with regard to environmentally friendly
urbanization in the five central pavilions:
– URBAN DWELLERS tells the story of people living in cities.
five sections feature videos of six real families from cities on
five continents. the pavilion gives visitors a vivid idea of why
people are drawn to urban areas.
– URBAN BEINGS compares the city to a human being. as
metabolism and circulation are important for a human body
to function properly, the well-being of a city depends on the
constant adjustment between the needs of man and city.
– URBAN FOOTPRINTS are the result of people’s interac-
tion with cities and the environment. in three exhibition
halls, the pavilion traces the birth and growth of cities, their
philosophies and the knowledge created within them.
– URBAN DREAMS invites visitors to imagine what cities
will be like in the future. it shows how cities were planned
and realized in the past, proposes the various possibilities of
a city of the future, and points to the spiritual elements that
have always driven human progress.
– URBAN PLANET, the centerpiece of the central Chinese
pavilions, juxtaposes the risks and opportunities of life in
cities (see next page).

The Eureka Moment: in five spectacular metamorphoses, Planet Earth tells its own story.
Better City, Better Life 3

URBAN PLANET is the central Chinese theme pavilion and
geographically as well as thematically at the heart of the
exhibition. a 14 meters high double helix, it consists of two
parts: the ascending Road of Crisis and the descending
Road of Solutions highlight the ambivalence of cities as
gigantic resource-consuming organisms versus hubs of
innovation and knowledge. the Road of Crisis strikingly
visualizes the destructive potential of cities that endangers
our planet with environmental pollution, climate change,
mining of resources, waste production and destruction of
nature. it culminates in a spectacular view onto the Blue
planet and presents the earth’s development through the
ages. do we really want to go on living like we are now?
Shouldn’t we work together to stop the destruction of this
beautiful planet? these are the questions that the Blue
planet seems to ask.
in the second part of the URBAN PLANET double helix,
the Road of Solutions presents innovative approaches to
the global challenges in four chapters, “low Carbon”,
“urban Mining, “drop of life”, and “green City”. Cities
are shown as incubators for innovation, knowledge and
technology. More than 100 best-practice examples,
10 of which have been contributed by dhl, present the
manifold possibilities for achieving sustainable and
environmentally compatible life on earth, i.e. by means
of renewable energies, new mobility concepts, or eco-
effective urban infrastructures. the examples show
how technological development, political initiatives,
civic activities and individual behavior can contribute to
an ecological transformation of our civilization towards
a better, greener future.
Combining western narrative tradition with Chinese feng Shui, the uRBan planet pavilion deals with
complex urbanization processes and the global challenges they pose.

with operations in over 220 countries and territories, the
dhl business has considerable impact on the environment,
which gives us great responsibility. we acknowledge this
responsibility with our environmental protection program
gogreen. the first company in the global logistics industry
to do so, we have set ourselves clear, quantified carbon
emissions targets: we aim to improve our carbon efficien-
cy, including our subcontractors’ operations, by 30 percent
by the year 2020 compared to 2007; by 2012 we want to
reach an interim target of 10 percent in our own opera-
tions. to achieve our objective, we are taking a variety of
angles. One of them is the optimization of our fleet and
network. we will, for instance, gradually replace parts of
our air and ground fleets by more fuel-efficient machines,
shift transports from air to road, sea and rail as well as
from road to rail whenever possible. we research, develop
and implement innovative technologies such as alternative
vehicles or dynamic route planning.
another lever is the improved energy efficiency of our
buildings, e.g. by means of more efficient lighting, heating
and cooling systems. we encourage our workforce to save
emissions and have integrated gogreen in our policies
and guidelines. last, but not least, we involve our sub-
contractors and customers. we lead the way in european
discussions about the collection of subcontractors’ carbon
data. and for our customers, we have developed eco-
friendly and efficient products, services and solutions
to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
after all, more and more companies and individuals realize
that carbon efficiency is everybody’s business if we want
to take action against climate change.
Our carbon-neutral and carbon-reduced concepts, products
and services make us an ideal partner for the URBAN
PLANET pavilion and show how logistics is already finding
answers to the manifold global and, in particular, urban
challenges of our times. the following pages present the
10 dhl expo exhibits and some of the many solutions
that dhl has been working in over the years.
the ten examples of eco-friendly and efficient dhl solutions shown at the expo Shanghai 2010
demonstrate that we are already traveling on the Road of Solutions.

Our consolidation center is a pertinent example of how
efficient city logistics can drastically reduce inner city
traffic: all goods destined for a city first arrive at a consoli-
dation center outside the city. there they are sorted and
transported to their destination by one single logistics
company only. the dhl consolidation center handles
transport in the most efficient way and helps to reduce
traffic and emissions.
City logistics is not just about reducing the number of
vehicles running in a city. it is also about using intelligent
technologies to ensure that those vehicles that are out on
the streets don’t make more miles than absolutely neces-
sary. the intelligent dhl Smart truck demonstrates how
modern technologies can help to protect the climate. a
dynamic tour planning system calculates the most efficient
delivery route and cleverly manages traffic jams, detours
and instant orders.
at the dhl hub, outgoing shipments are registered via
Rfid (Radio frequency identification), another innovative
technology that is revolutionizing logistics. the Smart truck
itself is equipped with Rfid technology to control the
shipments while they are on board. the on-board unit
automatically navigates the vehicle and draws up a stop
list that takes into account current traffic data to avoid
traffic jams and road works. it also enables couriers to
meet on their rounds to exchange shipments and speed up
their delivery.
while a regular truck takes 6 hours for 485 km and emits
181.8 kg of CO2, the Smart truck is estimated to reduce the
distance to 385 km, running time to 5 hours and CO2
emissions to 144.3 kg. City traffic is reduced and 37.5 kg
of CO2 emissions can be saved. an added value of the dhl
Smart truck: it informs customers about the imminent
arrival of a shipment.

the urban life of the future needs visionary ideas, ideas
such as the dhl Bring Buddy. we are collaborating with
universities in a research program to develop alternative
concepts for avoiding inner city traffic. the basic idea
behind it: people who already move across the city could
carry parcels. after all, thousands of people move through
cities every day – by bike, by car, by bus, or by tram. if a
parcel needs to be picked up or delivered on their way,
they could do the job. in the context of this concept,
mobile phones work as information and documentation
tools. Social networks become real networks. Bring Buddy
makes dedicated delivery vehicles and the additional CO2
emissions they produce superfluous. Streets would be less
congested, emissions would be reduced, and the environ-
ment, our climate in particular, would benefit.
while people are moving across the city, they can easily
dispatch and pick up their own parcels. the dhl pack-
station, a parcel pick-up and delivery machine, prevents
failed delivery, reduces city traffic and saves emissions.
the added customer value of this simplifying solution:
the 24/7 postal point makes waiting for the courier or
queuing at the post office a thing of the past. Customers
just dispatch or pick up their packages from the parcel
machine whenever they want.
in germany, its country of origin, the dhl packstation
has enjoyed tremendous success. Since its introduction
in 2002, the number of machines has risen from 12 to
2,500 with 1,000 new machines having been installed
in 2009 alone. today there are machines all over the
country and the majority of germans has to spend no
more than 10 minutes to get to the next packstation.
no wonder that some 1.5 million users take advantage
of this customer and environment-friendly service.
in a modern city, people are constantly on the move. So why not use them to transport parcels?
Or leave it to them to pick them up?

Small things can have a big impact: for example, take the
decision to combine different transport modes. dhl offers
a combination of sea and air transport, saving up to 40%
of CO2 emissions. apart from using ships, dhl transporta-
tion networks and solutions integrate other emission-mini-
mizing modes such as rail or alternative-engine vehicles.
Regarding air transport, dhl improves efficiency with
route optimization and consolidation of shipments.
But it’s not just the mode of transport you choose, it’s also
the kind of vehicle you use. So to advance climate protec-
tion, we test alternative vehicles and drives – and improve
them when we can – including the outer shapes of trucks.
after all, there is a decisive difference between a tradition-
al truck and an aerodynamic truck. a revised outer shape
minimizes aerodynamic drag – and thus fuel consumption.
the new aerodynamic trucks, the so-called teardrop trailers,
developed by dhl in collaboration with vehicle manufac-
turer dOn-BuR, save up to 10 percent fuel compared to
traditional trucks. More than 360 trucks are already on
the road.
Some 300,000 dhl employees worldwide can make a
huge difference when they behave in an environmentally
conscious way at the workplace. therefore, we encourage
our employees to reduce their CO2 emissions for business
trips, the daily journey to work, and even work itself.
intelligent technologies can help.
30 employees in a pilot project have gone a step further.
they use our “Simply green” tool to calculate their carbon
footprint in comparison with their baseline. for the amount
of CO2 they save, they are rewarded with climate protec-
tion points.
Climate protection is everywhere. Our gogreen environmental protection program is not limited to city
logistics, but explores a wide range of opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions.

with thousands of offices, hubs and gateways all over the
world, we can make a difference by constructing eco-friendly
buildings. they are an important step to saving resources and
emissions. therefore, we comply with the latest standards
and apply state-of-the-art technologies when building new
facilities. for our european hub at leipzig airport in germany,
for instance, we use an extremely powerful block heat and
power plant, have installed solar panels and collect rainwater
to use for cleaning aircraft. all these measures help to protect
the climate – and minimize our operation costs.
More and more of our customers, both corporate and
private, are environmentally aware and demand sustain-
able products and services. that’s why we invented the
gOgReen service. for every gOgReen shipment sent with
dhl, we calculate the CO2 emissions and offset them by
investing in climate protection projects. One example of
such a project is the liuao wind park in China’s fujian
province. By offsetting 7,557 tons of CO2 in 2008 alone,
we support the operation of this wind park, which replaces
a coal-fired power plant. the success of the gOgReen
parcel encouraged us to develop other green services
around the delivery of letters and goods.
Offsetting is not the only way in which the climate benefits
from our services. with hybrid print & Mail, dhl global Mail
provides customers with an environmentally-friendly, and
at the same time cost-conscious, way to send bulk interna-
tional mail. with one click of the mouse, dhl global Mail
customers digitally transmit high volume international
transactional mail. we print it at the destination and quickly
and securely manage the final delivery around the world.
for the benefit of our customers and the environment.
Other dhl divisions benefit from dhl global Mail hybrid
know-how and use their services for imaging and hosting,
records and print management.
while we gladly use every state-of-the-art technology to
make logistics more environmentally friendly, we prefer
to drive innovation and develop cutting-edge solutions
that will shape the logistics of the future. that’s why we
created the dhl innovation initiative, an unique innova-
tion community within dhl Solutions & innovations,
where partners, customers and experts from science and
technology share knowledge on innovations. the dhl
innovation Center also provides a space for the develop-
ment of new logistics solutions.
with the manifold solutions for enhancing CO2 efficiency,
we at dhl are at the vanguard of the logistics for the
future – to satisfy the needs of our customers and the
environment and to contribute to better cities, better life.
above and beyond the solutions presented at the expo, we at dhl harness state-of-the-art technologies
to contribute to climate protection. But that’s not all; we are further driving efficient processes and solutions.
