Background

The Health System of Bangladesh is pluralistic andfragmented.

In 2008, based on a recommendation from Annual

In 2008, based on a recommendation from AnnualProgram Review of Sector Wide Approach (SWAP), GIZagreed to assist the MoHFW in developing a well-functioning health information system (HIS) whichincorporates data across all the different levels of thehealth system.

So, in 2009, an innovative and integrated approachtowards HIS strengthening was started.

Introduction of DHIS2

GIZ supported MoHFW to develop a central electronicdata repository for national health data, called theNational Data Warehouse using DHIS2 version 2.0.1

The aim was to bridge the gap between the fragmentedsystems by bringing together the data from variousdatabases.

DHIS2 is a free and Open Source health informationsystem developed and maintained by University ofOslo.

As a part of this initiative GIZ advocate DHIS2-customization for interested MISs. DGHS showninterest and DHIS2 was first customized for them fordecentralized data entry (2011).

DHIS2 in DGFP

DGFP showing interest to implement DHIS2 for theiragreegriated service statistics system and MNCHtracking. GIZ and ICDDB under the supervison ofPMMU will help DGFP to implement DHIS2. All upzila oftwo district will start data entry from February 2015 and

DHIS2 for Urban Area

GIZ developed an Urban HMIS package which canbe used for all Urban Facilities including CityCorporations and NGOs. This HMIS package basedon the DGHS Server are free for everyone to adoptfollowing the standards of MIS DGHS. DGHS

We GIZ are currently supporting HMISimplementation in Sylhet, Rajshahi and Narayanganjcity corporations with the active participation ofrelevant health departments and NGOs, public andprivate facilities.
