Iain Fraser and Seven Years of the de Havilland Scale Modellers

Having completed seven years at the helm of the de Havilland Scale Modellers in November 2010, Iain Fraser has given in to the seven year itch and stepped down as President and Grand Poobah, in order to pursue more family activities. Bruno Campoli has agreed to step up from Vice-President to the exalted position. The role of Vice-President has been awarded to Phil Tunbridge. Sandy McRorie has agreed to continue as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The newly installed executive plan on maintaining the same agenda as the previous regime, possibly with their own twist. On his retirement, let us cast a glance back over the accomplishments of the club under Iain’s stewardship. It is a stellar list. The club operates under the aegis of the de Havilland Employees Sports Club, and has about 40 members at the Downsview site. There are also a few international members, who are part of the Bombardier family. The club became a chapter within IPMS Canada during its first year. In our third year IPMS Canada published an issue of Random Thoughts (Vol.30 No.2) – The De Havilland Scale Modellers Chapter Special Issue – wherein all the articles were by members of the club, and illustrated the wide range of subjects they modelled. The club holds 10 meetings per year, September through June, with a hiatus during the Downsview summer plant shutdown. There is also a club contest each October, with members vying for the Golden Beaver Award. The list of past winners is posted below. At the monthly meetings the members have brought in several hundred models over the past seven years. The quality of which is very high, as evidenced by the number of awards acquired by the members at model contests throughout southern Ontario and the United States. The club sponsors external contest awards, such as the “Best Made In Canada” category at the Ajax Scale Model Contest, and the Aircraft Category at Heritagecon in Hamilton. Iain, along with Wayne Bowman, Sandy McRorie and the legendary Derek Pennington have run clinics to pass along their techniques and encourage newcomers and returning modellers to expand their capabilities. Iain, on behalf on the club, thanks for your leadership. It’s amazing what has come out of those coffee-break discussions.
