THE RIGHT WAY TO BRUSHQ: Is there a recommended technique for brushing teeth?

A: Yes. Divide your mouth into quadrants, thinking

of right and left sections on top, and the same on the

bottom. And think of each quadrant having an inside

and outside, for a total of eight sections. Brush each of

those sections separately. The back teeth are the hardest

to clean, so start with them. To get at the outside surfaces

of the back teeth, open your mouth only slightly.

Otherwise you will stretch the cheeks taut against the

teeth and impede the movement of the brush.

In each of the sections, tilt the brush to a 45-degree angle

to brush where the tooth and the gum meet. You want

to make sure the brush’s bristles work their way into the

groove – also called the sulcus – where tooth and gum

meet. Keep the brush horizontal and the strokes short, a

quarter inch or so, as you brush the teeth. Move to the

next section and repeat. After brushing, rinse your mouth

thoroughly with warm water.

Talk with your dentist about the right way to brush your

teeth and how to supplement brushing with flossing and

gum stimulation.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Village Council identified key issues it hopes to address through long-range plan-ning at a June 2 meeting.

One of the most frequently mentioned discussion items was facilities upgrades. In May, village officials announced they would be re-examining cost-effective ways to provide upgrades for the Village Hall and police and fire stations.

Mayor Martin Tully said the facil-ities need to be addressed in the near future. With inflation, he said, the cost of the project is only going to continue to rise.

“It’s not something that’s going to get better,” he said.

Officials previously have said the Village Hall and police station build-ings have outlived their useful life, and they require new roofs, HVAC systems and other upgrades and do not meet the needs of village staff.

Officials described the police sta-tion as too small with inadequate stor-age space and a lack of private meeting areas, while they said the Village Hall is too large and creates operational in-efficiencies.

The facilities upgrades were pre-viously proposed to be executed via a multiphase, multi-year plan that would have included constructing new police and fire stations as well as a new fleet maintenance garage on village-owned property at Ogden Avenue and Lacey Road.

That project was estimated to cost about $50 million. An advisory refer-endum regarding the project was over-whelmingly voted down, with 87.6 per-cent of votes cast against it.

Commissioner William Waldack said upgrading the police station and other facilities is important, but he doesn’t want to move the facilities to village-owned land on Ogden Avenue.

Commissioner Greg Hose said the facilities should move to Ogden Ave-nue. If an oil tanker were to derail in Downers Grove, he said, the police sta-tion would potentially be destroyed in the process, which he called “unaccept-able.” He said the police station should be moved to Ogden Avenue first and the Village Hall could be moved later.

Commissioner Bill White said he agrees with addressing the facilities plans but also wants to look at addi-tional tools to improve historic preser-vation. He said he wants to avoid hav-ing an issue such as the demolition of the Edwards House happen again.

White said he also hopes to find a way to increase sales tax revenue in the village.

“If we fall behind other communi-ties in sales tax, that money doesn’t stay in our taxpayers’ pockets,” he said.

Tully said other issues he felt were important are enhancing historic pres-ervation, improving street mainte-nance and reconstruction, and looking at consolidation efforts.

DOWNERS GROVE – Af-ter months of discussion and debate, the historic Edwards House has been demolished.

Demolition began June 6 on the 1890s Queen Anne Victori-an and marked the end of the line for community efforts to save the home.

Tom Nybo, founder of the Save the Edwards House group, said watching the house come down was “depressing.”

Nybo and several other sup-porters of the effort to save the home came out to watch the teardown, which lasted about six hours. Local teens affiliated with the group brought signs to promote historic preservation.

“It’s a pretty big blow, spending a year on a project and watching it all go down in front of you,” Nybo said.

The Village Council voted 5-2 in December to approve con-struction of the 55-unit Marquis on Maple condominium devel-opment on the site of the histor-ic home and the property next to it at 942 Maple Ave. and 936 Maple Ave., respectively. But work was ongoing behind the scenes for months beforehand to find a way to save the house.

The closest the home came to being saved was in March. A plan had surfaced to lift the structure off its foundation and move it to another proper-ty on Maple Avenue owned by resident John Tillotson.

However, Tillotson wanted the village to cover the cost of moving the house, which was expected to total $133,000.

Instead, the council unani-mously approved offering Til-lotson a 10-year, interest-free loan of $123,560. Tillotson re-jected the offer, calling it “fi-nancially unattractive.”

He later reluctantly accept-

ed the loan offer, deciding it was the only way to save the house, but then withdrew from the plan when he ran out

of time to move the home be-cause of a May 15 construction start date set by the developer.

David Sosin, an attorney for

developer FFM-DG Develop-ment LLC, said in a previous interview all sides tried dili-gently to reach an agreement.

“We’re certainly sorry we couldn’t make everybody hap-py, but we’re following the code and we’re validating the vision of the Downers Grove council,” Sosin said.

The developer set the May 15 deadline because crews need to complete a certain por-tion of exterior work before winter, although work did not actually begin until May 29.

Sosin also previously said the home is “in a lot worse shape than anybody who hasn’t examined it understands” and called it “dangerous.” The de-veloper plans to use several style elements of the house in

the new condos, including stained glass windows.

Mayor Martin Tully said he is “deeply saddened” the vil-lage couldn’t come up with a way to save the home.

“I just think it’s an absolute shame and a crime we weren’t able to rise up and match our deeds with the village motto, which is ‘preserving the bal-ance between tradition and progress,’” he said.

DOWNERS GROVE – After achiev-ing their restaurant dreams, Danny and Kathy Living are ready to let some-one else have a turn.

The Livings are hold-ing an essay contest and the winner will receive a restaurant of their own at 970 Warren Ave., across from the Main Street Metra station.

It’s the current lo-cation of the Borrowed Earth Cafe, which is owned by the Livings.

Danny said the Na-perville couple have been doing sound ther-apy for 10 years and are going to devote them-selves full time to the practice, playing at hospitals and other locations.

“Our customers are excited for us and our new adventure,” he said.

The Livings will be taking the restaurant’s name, menu and their per-sonal possessions with them but are giving away the space and the items

inside, including the chairs, tables and kitchenware.

“They can come in and do anything they want in this space,” Danny said.

The restaurant, which the Livings have operated for nine years, serves organic ingredients and raw food.

Kathy said the idea for the contest

came from seeing similar undertak-ings on Facebook.

The contest requires a 200-word es-say and a $125 entry fee. Essays are due by Aug. 1 and must address why the applicant wants to own a restaurant and the applicant’s aptitude for being a restaurant owner and vision for the future.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, live in the United States and be a U.S. citizen or have the proper immi-gration status to work or own a busi-ness in this country.

The maximum number of appli-cants is 640. When the Livings receive the maximum amount or reach the deadline, they will read all the essays and name 10 finalists.

The essays will be passed on to two anonymous final judges, who are com-munity business owners and who will select the final winner.

The winner will be decided Aug. 20 and will receive $5,000 to help start their new venture.

“We’re excited about the contest,” Kathy said.

offered up the location to serve as the village’s first library and as a post of-fice, according to Nybo.

The home was the first in DuPage County to get indoor plumbing and one of the last to get electricity, he said.

Three families have lived in the house, Nybo said: The Edwardses, the Boyds and the Tuttles, who resided there until the mid-1980s. The house was purchased at that time by Charles Hannon, who spent 1 ½ years restor-ing it. Nybo said Hannon is funding the condo development that will be built on the site.

In 2013, the Lakota Group conduct-ed an architectural and historic sur-vey of Downers Grove, according to the Save the Edwards House website, and found the Edwards House was significant. This means it possessed a high distinction of architectural style or building type or was valuable for understanding a historic period or context, construction method, use of indigenous materials, exceptional craftsmanship or the work of a master architect or builder.

The property also was found to contain a high majority of historical materials. Sixty-five properties in the village were listed as significant to historic preservation.

Moving forwardNybo has decided it’s time to look

toward the future of Downers Grove history. The Save the Edwards House group will continue but will be re-named Friends of the Edwards House.

Nybo said the group of more than 20 people will work to prevent such a demolition from happening again.

“We’re going to focus on changing zoning for downtown districts,” he said. “That needs to change after all this.”

Other goals for the group include re-evaluating the village’s historic preservation ordinance, which Nybo said restricts homeowners’ abilities to make changes to their houses. He said owners of historic homes must pay multiple fees if they try to change the exterior of their houses in any way.

“There needs to be tax incentives,” Nybo said. “If somebody’s doing something to keep Downers Grove alive, there should be incentives, not restrictions.”

Tully hopes the demolition serves as a wake-up call for everyone to work together to make changes to the his-toric preservation ordinance, zoning code and anything else that will pre-vent historic homes from being torn down. He also credited the communi-ty for doing everything they could to save the house.

“The fact that we had private citi-zens step up ... I think was just noth-ing short of miraculous,” he said.

DOWNERS GROVE – The Village Council has unanimously approved allowing a Dunkin’ Donuts to build a drive-thru despite concern from vil-lage staff.

The council greenlighted the con-struction of the drive-thru, in addition to variances allowing it to be closer to the store’s property line than village requirements permit, at a meeting June 2.

The combination BP and Dunkin’ Donuts at 1200 75th St. will construct the drive-thru on the northwest por-tion of the property, where it will loop clockwise to connect to the building and bisect the sidewalk and parking lot to lead traffic back to the gas sta-tion.

Village Planning Manager Stan Popovich said at the council’s May 19 meeting there were “multiple safety concerns” with the plan, including pe-destrians needing to cross the drive-th-ru lane and cars potentially blocking traffic.

Dunkin’ Donuts owner Patrick Romer provided examples of success-

ful area drive-thrus May 19 and said June 2 he recently visited a Star-bucks that Commissioner Bill White previously cited as having a similar drive-thru.

Romer told the council he felt that plan was more complex than the one he presented but that the Starbucks drive-thru was approved without any pushback.

“It feels like we’re being held to a little bit stricter standard than Star-bucks,” he said.

Commissioner William Waldack said he voted in favor of the measure because previous councils have ap-proved complex drive-thrus at other locations but said the village should de-velop a new standard moving forward to reduce the complexity of designs.

“It’s because of our standards that good businesses want to locate in Downers Grove,” Waldack said.

Commissioner Greg Hose said cus-tomers will vote with their feet: If a drive-thru is difficult to navigate or traffic backs up, they will go some-where else.

“I think this does present some con-flicts, but at the same time they’re not insurmountable,” he said.

The long-range plan is for items the council hopes to complete by 2017. The council will hold five meetings to de-velop the plan and staff will present the finished product in September.

To the editor:Shame on all of the Downers Grove

officials willing to trade the historical gem of the Edwards House for a faceless condominium – all in the name of the almighty dollar!

While village management wasted precious time debating over a relatively minor moving cost, they consequently made no significant effort to preserve a century-old treasure. I find this hypocrit-ical, as they freely tout Downers Grove’s historical heritage and its significant structures.

At a minimum, the developer of the Edwards House site should have been contractually required to reimburse the village for moving the structure to a nearby site as proposed by John Tillotson

and other Downers Grove residents. The claim that the property is “dangerous” by David Sosin (the attorney for the developer FFM-DG) is nothing more than a smokescreen to justify their demolition of the Edwards House.

However, the root cause of the whole issue can be placed squarely on the near-sighted individuals of the village, which voted to make the property a tax increment financing district to encourage commercial development. The eventual loss of the Edwards House was a predict-able result without a historic preserva-tion ordinance.

In summary, I believe demolition of the Edwards House is an affront to all Downers Grove residents who appreciate its architectural significance.

Downers Grove Grade School District 58 closed yet another successful school year June 5. We wished our students and staff a happy summer vacation and we also took time to celebrate a very special group in the District 58 community: our 2015 retirees.

This year’s retirees com-prise a smaller group than usual – 10 in total – yet their contributions to District 58 are bountiful. The group carries a combined 257 years of service to District 58. And while their jobs and work locations vary widely, they all hold one common denominator: each and every one of them has left a deep impression on the District 58 community and they will be dearly missed.

During a recent retiree celebration, each retiree’s supervisor – whether principal or administrator – shared insights regard-ing the retiree’s years of service, telling short stories illustrat-ing each retiree’s impact on District 58. They lauded the retirees on their dedication, expertise and ability to adapt to change.

For example, Indian Trail Principal Robin Bruebach re-marked that her school’s two retirees, teachers Tianna Kurko and Kathleen Tice, both enthusiastically incorporated new technologies, such as iPads, into their classrooms and have embraced the new opportunities the technology has created. Herrick Principal Matt Neustadt complimented Instructional Assistant Lynn Putz on her willingness to always help out where needed. O’Neill Principal Matt Durbala thanked Speech Therapist Gloria Tatar for her organization, positive demeanor and flexibility. Superintendent Dr. Kari Cremascoli thanked Principal Paula Thomas for her incredible passion, creativity, inspiration and love for her students and community.

Without further ado, congratulations to District 58’s 2015 retirees! Thank you for your many years of service and best of luck in all your future endeavors.

During the course of the past year, even at times when there was tentative good news about the possible fate of the Edwards House, there was always a sense that it would take a Herculean effort to actually pull it off. We’ve heard from people incensed that its demo-lition was even being considered, and from people just as offended at the idea of a single tax dollar ever being spent on a possible move. It’s been a remarkably polarizing issue.

It is a shame the house is gone now, and it would’ve been fantastic if it could’ve been saved, but it’s not like Downers Grove has suddenly become less of a great place to live and work because of its absence. The mem-bers of the City Council are tasked with being

responsible stewards of our tax dollars, and the fact that they resisted the urge to jump in and play white knight is a good thing. If they spent our money freely on every theoretically worthwhile effort that came their way, the village would soon be bankrupt.

There are many amazing things that were once here and are now gone. Of the fabled “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,” only the Great Pyramid of Giza still stands. What’s important is they were here, and we remember them. And while the effort to get the Edwards House moved didn’t achieve its stated goals, it did cause many people in the community who might never have noticed the building to know it existed. So the at-tempt wasn’t entirely in vain.

Edwards House’s end is sad, but not tragic

SOUND OFFRoad work done poorly

The recently finished project in Downers Grove from 63rd Street to 67th and from Main streets to Saratoga is a very poor job done by the company the village hired. The sidewalks and partially finished concrete driveways have cracks right from the begin-ning. The drain ditches are too deep, hard to cut the grass, but they don’t drain properly.

How about a new pool?I am pleased about the purchase of

land the Downers Grove Park District has acquired. I personally would love to see an outdoor pool for our town. Maybe some-thing with a sandy beach, a playground for young children or even some slip slides for all to enjoy. How does that idea sound?

Correcting a locationTo the caller who was worried about the

Downers Grove Park District purchasing the old junkyard property on Ogden for $4.5 million, I say relax, you’ve got your properties mixed up. The acreage pur-chased by the Park District is way further to the west, off Walnut. But you still might have something to worry about if someone at the Park District gets the idea to put a water park there instead of a playing field.

Not the Village Council’s faultIt’s very disappointing to see that the

proposed buyer of the Edwards House is blaming former Village Council mem-bers for the demise of the purchase. I think the proposal offered by the Village Council, a 10-year, no-interest loan, was very generous. Instead the proposed buyer thought he should get a gift of roughly $123,000 from taxpayer funds. … The council members did the taxpayers a favor since the owner of every other historic building in the village would have been lined up to get their “gift.”

Something to fear?At the June 2 Downers Grove council

meeting, one member said we need to relocate the police station because it is close to the railroad tracks and an explod-ing tank car would wipe it out. One may say that a meteor may strike and destroy the new station at Ogden and Lacey also.

Responsible dog ownershipEbersold Park in Downers Grove is

maintained and repaired by the town. That’s why the grass doesn’t look affected by 30 and 40 daily dog walkers. Dogs should not be walked on property owners’ main lawns. And keep them away from trees and mailboxes, unless they’re on your own property. … I have a

dog, and its duty is done on my property. Village ordinances are enforced by the police. Just be a responsible pet owners.

Not as expensive as they seemIf you bought a Chromebook at Best Buy,

it would not have the software, mostly educational, that District 58’s computers will have. If you meet a District 58 student, ask to see his school iPad. There are many programs on the computer that you would have to purchase separately if you bought an iPad at Best Buy or the Apple Store. While $280 seems expensive for a Chromebook, I suspect that it has several hundred dollars of software if you bought the programs separately.

More condos, more problemsWell, predictably, they [tore down] the Ed-

wards House so they can make room for 15 new condos to join the hundreds of empty condos that we have down there. If they do fill any of them, it’s nice to know that any of those taxes that come in are going to stay in that TIF. To make matters worse, any rainwater runoff problems created [won’t] stay in the TIF district, that’ll go out to us in the form of out stormwater tax.

Advocate Good Samaritan building 3-floor addition

DOWNERS GROVE – Construction is ongoing for a new 111,000-square-foot addition to Advocate Good Sa-maritan Hospital.

The addition will include 96 pri-vate patient rooms, and upon com-pletion, all the hospital’s remaining semiprivate rooms will be converted into private rooms, according to the hospital website.

The new three-floor bed tower is being built above the existing criti-cal care pavilion on the north end of the hospital campus on Highland Av-enue. The project is expected to cost $78 million.

Construction of the steel structure began earlier this year.

Hospital Public Affairs Manager Lisa Parro said there will be a cere-mony at 2 p.m. July 30 to celebrate the last steel beam being lifted into place. The public will be invited to the event. Parro said more details will be available in the near future.

The interior work on the addition

is scheduled to begin in the fall and expected to be completed in spring of 2016. According to the hospital web-site, the addition could open to pa-tients by May 31, 2017.

The new rooms will all be energy efficient. An upgraded physical plant will help address energy and water costs, the hospital website stated.

The addition is proposed to meet silver criteria outlined by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and will feature energy-efficient light-ing, ultra low-flow plumbing fixtures, high-efficiency HVAC systems and state-of-the-art building automation.

Officials have placed a camera on top of the physician office center on the south end of the hospital cam-pus. Once a minute, the camera takes a photo of the construction site and posts it on the hospital website.

DOWNERS GROVE – Downers Grove police have arrested two juveniles in connection with a streak of vandalism reported in the village, according to a village news release.

Police arrested the 14-year-olds early June 8, according to Lt. David Bormann. Both are from Downers Grove.

During the past two weeks, there were 10 incidents in which car tires were slashed, basketball nets were cut down and a trampoline was damaged during

overnight hours, the release stated.The reports, which started coming in

May 23, were mostly from the village’s northwest portion, including Brookbank Road and Middaugh, Saratoga and Lee avenues, among other streets.

The result, which came courtesy ofsecond-half tallies by the home side’s Sam Mewis,Elizabeth Eddy and Jamia Fields, snapped aseven-game unbeaten run for the visitors to openthe season and a ten-game unbeaten run datingback to 2014. Red-hot Chicago striker Sofia Huertabagged the late consolation goal, moments afterhaving a penalty kick attempt saved.The game’s first promising look went to hostsWestern New York in the second minute, as acorner kick from the left saw Red Stars goalkeep-er Michele Dalton struggle to control the ball intraffic but then recover well to deny Mewis at thefar post. The next quality chance was created byChicago, as Vanessa DiBernardo released Huertadown the left and the striker cut to her right beforereleasing a powerful drive that was deflected by adefender and whistled wide of the frame.After potential goal-saving tackles by Red Starscenter backs Samantha Johnson in the 22ndminute and Michelle Lomnicki in the 25th minute,teammate Alyssa Mautz nearly opened the scoringat the other end around the half-hour mark. WORK CONTINUES ON IMET FUND RECOVERYA Chicago Tribune article published on Friday, April 10, 2015, described andidentified the municipal and school district assets invested with the IllinoisMetropolitan Investment Fund (IMET) that have been restricted as a result ofalleged fraud. IMET advised its municipal clients that they expect to recover 60 to70% of the total funds lost. To date, $29,000 of the $586,000 in Village investmentfunds affected by the fraudulent activity has been returned.

Work by IMET to recover funds continues including the sale of assets and filing ofinsurance claims. The Village will continue its efforts to monitor the situation andrecover the remainder of all lost investments.

The Village invests funds using sound financial practices in keeping with its CashManagement and Investment Policy which is available at www.downers.us.

DOWNERS GROVE – Another great day for Kristin Lea, Caroline Hedgcock and the Downers Grove South softball team also produced payback.

After having last season ended by a sectional final loss against Naperville Central, the Mustangs (36-1) turned the tables with a 9-3 rout of the Redhawks (26-9) in the Downers South sectional title game June 6.

“After the upset last year, we defi-nitely wanted to take it to them and wanted this game,” Lea said.

With a school-record 77 hits and a .575 average entering the day, Lea has been the leader of a slugging offense all year. She and the Mustangs (.440 team average and 11.2 runs per game) added to their amazing 2015 feats Sat-urday against Bradley bound Red-hawks pitcher Julie Kestas.

The only thing that slowed South’s postseason momentum were thunder-storms that rolled through the area June 8 and forced a postponement of their supersectional game against Marist to June 9.

Lea’s RBI double highlighted a two-run first inning against Naperville Central, and her leadoff double began a four-hit deluge in the third to stretch the lead to 5-0.

An RBI triple by Lea (3 for 4, three RBIs, three runs scored) then keyed a three-run fourth inning that made it 8-0.

“It’s a balance of waiting for a good pitch, then being aggressive when you get it and hitting it hard,” Lea said.

Nicole Bowman had RBI singles in the third and fourth, and .532 hitter Megan LoBianco (2 for 2 with three RBIs against Central) was another star for the Mustangs. Zahrya McFarland (two hits) was on base three times and Kristen Bialek scored twice.

Beyond her day at the plate, Lea de-nied the Redhawks with diving catches of three line drives at first base.

“She hits it hard, and she’s a Gold Glove at first base,” Mustangs’ coach Ron Havelka said. “She stayed after practice yesterday and wanted balls hit at her – that’s the kind of player she is. She’s as good as they get.”

That description also fits Hedg-cock’s pitching. She improved to 15-0 with a 12-strikeout two-hitter, retiring the first 16 Redhawk hitters. Hedgcock

(.560 with 10 home runs this season) also added an RBI single in the third.

“Everyone was so up for the game,” Hedgcock said. “The energy was in-credible.”

“She was getting ahead of the hitters and she was mixing pitches,” Havelka said. “Her changeup was working great and she had them really off balance.”

Downers South is 3-1 against the

Redhawks in postseason meetings during the past five years.

“I was really proud of them,” Havelka said of his team. “I could tell they were re-ally into the game and they were ready.”

ROMEOVILLE - With only three full-time returning start-ers from its 2014 sectional championship team, Downers Grove South’s baseball team had lots of work ahead when the season started.

“Last year we tried to play with a lot of energy and play for each other, not for ourselves, and we carried that over,” se-nior shortstop Joe Engel said.

With their practically new lineup, the Mustangs reached the sectional for an unprece-dented third straight season but lost 3-1 against Plainfield North in the Class 4A Romeo-ville sectional final June 6.

The Mustangs (30-6) were thwarted by pitcher Matt Vanek, who scattered five sin-gles with one strikeout, three walks and two hit batters.

“[Vanek] did a great job,” Downers South coach Darren Orel said. “The better team won today and that’s what it’s about [in the playoffs].”

The Mustangs had base run-ners every inning and stranded three in scoring position. They took a 1-0 lead after senior Ryan Taylor was hit by a pitch and

senior Zack Radde walked to start the bottom of the second. After senior Joe Lacivita’s sac-rifice bunt, junior Ben Ficht’s ground out scored Taylor.

Jones in the top of the third, and two doubles in the fourth built a 3-1 lead.

“Really, today and Hinsdale Central [a 9-1 loss May 21] were the only days the other team was just flat out better than us,”

Orel said. “We were still right there. That’s the kind of tough-ness that these kids have shown and I really, really enjoy.”

Taylor and Engel returned as three-year starters, and catcher Danny Oriente and

pitcher Pete Hamot also were varsity returners who set the tone for the Mustangs.

“Tradition never gradu-ates. Same motto and same motivations as last year,” Ori-ente said. “There’s no individ-uals on this team.”

Last summer, the Mustangs reached the summer state tour-nament finals. This spring, they won 16 straight games and repeated as undefeated West Suburban Conference Gold champs with an 18-0 record.

“When you win 30 games and you get to a sectional championship, you’ve got to be proud,” Orel said. “This group got a lot out of themselves. We had kids step up, some seniors that didn’t play last year that had big years, and we had some great pitching.”

Hamot turned in a strong starting performance in a sec-tional semifinal, allowing just three hits and two earned runs in a 12-2, six-inning win June 3 against Downers Grove North.

“Ultimately it was the mound and our defense,” Orel said. “We turned three double plays, Ha-mot was ahead of hitters and … he was just trying to be efficient, pitch to contact and get outs. I thought he did a great job.”

ROMEOVILLE – The led-ger will show a 12-2 loss to end the season for Downers Grove North baseball this season, but Brendan Shanahan will have other memories.

“We did pretty well as team this season,” the junior catch-er said. “We won 20-something games all together. We were on a roll for a while then our bats started to cool down, but then our bats picked back up. We’ve done a lot of team bonding over the course of the season, so we’re pretty close.”

The Trojans won a region-al title for the second time in three seasons and finished the season with a 24-13 record af-ter the 12-2 loss against Down-ers Grove South in a sectional semifinal game June 3.

Included in the win total were two wins in a three-game series against Lyons Township, a 4-2 win against

fellow regional champion Naperville Central, and back-to-back shutouts to win the regional. One of those shut-out wins was a 10-0 victory against rival Hinsdale Cen-tral; the Trojans won all four games against the Red Devils this season.

“[It was] a resilient group. They battled. The teams play-ing in sectionals, they play good baseball against good teams. We did that and they have a lot to be proud of,” head coach Chad Isaacson said. “We haven’t had many games where our oars came com-pletely out of the water. We lost some tight ball games and we battled back. I’m proud of their efforts.”

A senior-led lineup set the tone for the Trojans.

“I grew up with them,” Shanahan said of the senior group. “Freshman year I got pulled up and it’s just a type of family connection. They all help each other out no matter

what. It’s family through thick and thin.”

Third baseman Dallton Ba-ran was the only other every-day junior position player in addition to Shanahan. Pitcher Ryan Cantlin also was a ju-nior.

Paul Cappetta, Ben Carl-son, Myles Farley, Pat Ger-aghty, Brett Pyburn, Jake Stevenson and Jack Warwick were everyday seniors for North. Pitchers Ryan An-drews and Nic Laio as well as Alex Bielawa, Ben Magro and Costa Sampras also were part of the senior class.

“Great senior leadership, there’s no doubt about it,” Isaacson said. “These guys led the way. The countless hours these guys did the little things without me pressing them in order to get better and better, they’ve done it. That’s the leadership and guidance those guys have given. They’ve com-peted every single day, and that’s what we ask.”
