DOWNERS GROVE – The state ofthe village annual report presentedduring the village council meeting Feb.10 touched on Downers Grove’s strate-gic goals.

“The report looks back on some ofthe highlights of the last year, but hasalso come to be known as the state ofthe village,” said Mayor Martin Tully,who presented it. “And because of thatname I feel compelled to say that thestate of the village is exceptional.”

Report highlights include:

InfrastructureIn 2014, the village completed more

than $20 million in capital improve-ment projects, including streets, storm-water, water and sidewalks, Tully said.

Among those expenditures were:• $6.9 million in street reconstruc-

tion• $4.91million in street maintenance• $3.5 million in a stormwater proj-

ect to mitigate flooding that includedbuying homes in flood plains

• About $4 million in water projectssuch as new water mains, valves andhydrants

•More than $860,000 in sidewalk con-

struction, maintenanceand ADA compliance.

One accomplishmentin infrastructure isthe village’s improvedFEMA flood rating,which went from 7 to 6,Tully said, and reducedflood insurance premi-ums by 20 percent for properties with-in the flood plain.

Finances“For many years, Downers Grove

has had a balanced budget,” Tully said.“We have a well-balanced general fundthat added $300,000 to its balance at theend of 2014. The general fund is verycritical because it is themain operatingfund of the village, and includes fund-ing for themajority of village services.”

Except for mandatory public safe-ty pension contributions, the villageportion of property tax bills has stayedflat or decreased each of the past fouryears, he said.

• The village eliminated $1.9 mil-lion in the transportation fund accu-mulated deficit. Additionally, trans-ferring transportation operations tothe PACE bus system saved $100,000in operating expenses.

• The village refinanced outstand-

ing bonds and reduced general obliga-tion bond payments by $500,000.

• The village received a total of $2.5million in grants in 2014 including aFEMA Hazardous Mitigation grant tohelp acquire homes in a flood plain, aDuPage Mayors and Managers Confer-ence grant for surface transportationprojects at Main and 59th streets, and aDepartment of Commerce & EconomicOpportunity grant for the downtownpedestrian crossing project.

Service enhancementsThe Village Operations Center is

now capable of receiving wireless firealarm transmissions from businesses.The switch to wireless eliminates busi-ness phone lines, saving $600 to $1,200 ayear for businesses, Tully said.

Fire departmentThe fire department now ranks in

the top 1.5 percent of departments na-tionwide for fire protection effective-ness. The ratings are issued by theInsurance Service Office and used toset residential and business insurancepremiums. An improvement means areduction in premiums throughout thevillage, Tully said.

Sign ordinanceThe original goal of the sign ordi-

nance, adopted in 2005, was to achievea more aesthetically pleasing look inthe commercial corridors, Tully said.Compliance to date is about 96 percent.

Prescription drug drop-offThe village responded to residents’

request for a prescription drug drop-off program, Tully said. Residents maytake expired or unused prescriptionmedications to the police departmentto drop off at no cost.

Police departmentThe police department partnered

with the fire department to conduct anactive shooter exercise with Midwest-ern University and Advocate GoodSamaritan Hospital, Tully said, meet-ing federal requirements for emer-gency training. First responders fromOak Brook, Lombard, Woodridge andDarien also participated.

“We are well positioned to accom-plish our identified projects and goals,”Tully said. “We should be proud of thiscommunity, proud of this organizationand proud of ourselves for making thisall possible.”

DOWNERS GROVE – A new planarose at the village council meetingFeb. 10 thatmay rescue the historic Ed-wards House from the wrecking ball,and save a few trees along Maple Ave-nue as well.

Downers Grove resident John Til-lotson, who stepped forward to movethe house from its current location at942 Maple Ave. to his property at 743Maple Ave., requested the council pro-vide approval for he and his team ofindustry professionals to work withthe village forester on a revised map oftrees affected by the move, and for thecouncil to vote on the new proposal atits meeting Tuesday.

The council agreed to Tillotson’s re-quest to move forward in working withvillage staff.

According to a village manager’sreport dated Friday, Tillotson and hishouse-moving professional and consult-ing arborist will meet with staff thisweek to prepare an updated structurerelocation route and tree removal andpruning plan. Staff are also workingwith Tillotson on a revised term sheetfor the proposed three-party agreement.

The review and discussion of theseitems is now tentatively scheduled forthe council meeting March 3.

At the Jan. 20 council meeting, amap developed by staff indicated morethan 20 treeswouldhave to be trimmed,temporarily removed and replanted, orpermanently removed were the houserelocated. Residents and commission-ers voiced concerns over the potentialtree loss.

One of the requirements for themove would be for Tillotson to gain ap-proval from the five residents whosetrees would need pruning.

Not having access to the village for-ester, Tillotson worked with a certifiedarborist and the moving company todevise an alternative plan to preservesome of the trees.

“I have to say that going into thatactivity I personally didn’t knowwhere I stood on the whole initiative,

and the reason is, I really like trees,”Tillotson said. “Our intent is to live inthe home and we don’t want to be thepeople responsible for upsetting theneighborhood and having this impacton the trees. ... At the end of that ex-ercise, I had a different feeling, whichwas we really can do this with mini-mal tree impacts based on opinions byexperts.”

Tillotson said that by turning thehome into 743 Maple Ave., the trees at802 Maple Ave. would not be affected.The original plan required them tobe pruned, and the neighbor had ex-pressed disapproval, he said.

The new plan also involves mov-ing some dirt in the parkway near theDowners Grove Historical Museum toavoid a large parkway maple tree andtwo private trees at 826 Maple Ave.,where the homeowner has not givenapproval for tree trimming or removal,he said.

In discussing Tillotson’s request,commissioner Greg Hose said staffwould not be starting with nothing,since there is already a staff report onthe matter, and additional informationfrom the arborist.

“We are not making a commitmentone way or the other,” Hose said. “If

the ultimate product is 10 trees re-moved instead of 15 I don’t know if thatis going to move the needle for me, butI think it is worth it to find out.”

In addition to the tree impact, an-other concern is financing. The villagestated it would waive the building per-mit fees of $140,000 for the condo de-velopment where the Edwards Housecurrently sits, and disburse the fundsheld in escrow to Tillotson after the re-location.

“I think tree impact will still besignificant,” said commissioner GeoffNeustadt. “I can’t outlay any dollarsthat are public dollars. The tree impactis important, the dollars are becomingmore and more important.”

Downers Grove resident DeniseLazar spoke against the use of villagemoney for the Edwards House.

“I want the council to know that it’snot appropriate to spend public dollarsand I appreciate you speaking out fortaxpayers in terms of protecting ourmoney,” Lazar said. “This is not anemergency. ... You need to do your joband get information to make a thought-ful decision.”

Tillotson said that since the Jan. 20meeting, he took steps to seek alterna-tive funding.

DOWNERS GROVE – During itsmeeting Feb. 1, the village council opt-ed not to pass a motion to allow elec-tronic message board signs, endingCommunity High School District 99’spursuit of the signs at North and Southhigh schools.

The school district has been work-ing with the village to begin the appli-cation process to rezone its two schoolproperties from residential to cam-pus-scale institutional and public, orINP-2, but also sought a text amend-ment to the zoning ordinance to permitthe signs.

The ordinance prohibits electronicmessage board signs in all zoning dis-tricts, including INP-2.

According to village documents,the INP-2 district was designed to ac-commodate development of propertieslarger than 4 acres for public, civic andinstitutional use. The only propertyzoned INP-2 in the village is the Advo-cate Good Samaritan Hospital campus.Village documents indicate other prop-erties that could be eligible for INP-2

zoning include: District 99 properties,Downers Grove Grade School District58 properties, the Midwestern Univer-sity campus and park district, forestpreserve and village properties.

The idea of electronic messageboard signs in the village was causefor concern among many members ofthe council.

“I am not comfortable to openingthis to residents,” said CommissionerGreg Hose, who expressed worry forcommunity members living in prox-imity to properties affected by the pro-posed amendment.

Commissioner Geoff Neustadt alsosaid he didn’t feel the signs were rightfor Downers Grove.

Residents who were unable to at-

tend the meeting submitted remarksonline via the village website. Of the11 remarks submitted, the majoritysupported the district’s appeal for elec-tronic signage. Two members of thepublic spoke during the meeting, onein favor of the signs and one against.

“I have concerns about digital signsanywhere in the village, but I am notcompletely closed to this idea,” Com-missioner David Olsen said. “I am go-ing to be supporting this.”

Superintendent Mark McDonald ac-knowledged the school district’s desirefor electronic message board signs isseparate from its pursuit of INP-2 zon-ing, and said prior to the council’s Feb.3 meeting, the district believed onlyGood Samaritan and Midwestern Uni-

versity, in addition to North and Southhigh schools, were eligible for INP-2zoning.

McDonald said the district acknowl-edges the text amendment questionis different if applied to each schooland park district building in DownersGrove.

“I also want to note that at the Feb.3 meeting, District 99 showed exam-ples of digital signage at NapervilleCentral and Hinsdale Central highschools,” McDonald said. “Those ex-amples were intended to be examplesof comparable high schools, but in noway was our intent to offer councila specific sign for approval, nor didwe discuss specific digital technologyavailable, nor a specific sign for re-view by the council.”

The intent was to proceed with atext amendment that would provideparameters, he said.

McDonald said while he was disap-pointed with the council’s vote, he re-spected its decision.

“We will continue to go forwardwith INP-2 zoning with the village,” hesaid.

The motion failed 4-3.

“I have concerns about digital signs anywhere in the village,but I am not completely closed to this idea.

Petition challengessidewalk proposalin ClydeEstates

DOWNERS GROVE – A petition waspresented Feb. 10 to the village councilurging commissioners to vote to de-fund the proposed construction of newsidewalks in Clyde Estates scheduledto take place this year.

Clyde Estates resident Mike Salazarpresented the petition to the council.

Reasons cited in the petition for thedefunding include residents viewing thesidewalks as being unnecessary, a wasteof taxpayerdollars anda component thatwill decrease stormwater absorption.Other concerns include the potential fordamage to existing trees and root sys-tems during sidewalk construction.

“There are 65 households withinClyde Estates on the streets scheduledto have new sidewalks constructed thisyear,” Salazar said. “This petition issigned by 55 of the 65 households. Quickmath tells you that is 85 percent.”

The proposed project slated forClyde Estates includes not only side-walks but street reconstruction andstormwater drainage.

“We understand the proposed bud-get for street reconstruction is $1.5 mil-lion for streets, $500,000 for stormwa-ter improvements and $300,000 for thesidewalk element,” Salazar said. “Thispetition is only concerned with the side-walks. Our streets are in poor shape andwe do have stormwater issues. We needthese matters addressed properly.”

Several residents from Clyde Estateswere in attendance at the meeting andspoke out not only against the side-walks but also against the tree loss fromtheir proposed construction.

Elizabeth Davis said the Clyde Es-tates neighborhood was hit hard by the2011 tornado and many trees were lost asa result. While new trees were plantedto replace those destroyed, she said theyare now in jeopardy because of sidewalkconstruction no one wants. Mayor Mar-tin Tully said the council would take thepetition under advisement.

“I do realize there are certain peo-ple who feel very strongly against cer-tain aspects of the plan, but there havebeen efforts to try and at least discussthose,” Tully said.

The village has been working withChristopher B. Burke Engineeringon plans for Clyde Estates, accordingto village documents. A revised planincludes removing a proposed trafficcircle, raising ditch profiles wherev-er possible and regrading stormwatermanagement areas to save trees. Thatplan will be presented at the March 3council meeting.

Police: Attack on Coast Guard station,building arson linked tomanwith local ties

Amanwhocrashedhis truck througha Coast Guard station in Grand Haven,Mich., on Feb. 8 has ties to Westmontand Downers Grove.

Matthew L. Krueger,34, was charged withfalse report or threat ofterrorism and maliciousdestruction of property,according to a news re-lease from the Grand Ha-venDepartment of PublicSafety.

The investigation has not revealedany link to terrorism or a terrorist orga-nization, according to officials.

The incident began at 6:07 a.m. whena man, who police believe was the sus-pect, called Ottawa County Central Dis-patch. The caller announced he had abomb in his truck and was driving intoCoast Guard Station Grand Haven, offi-cials said.

After crashing his truck through

the Coast Guard Station gate, the sus-pect then broke into the station andassaulted Coast Guard personnel, offi-cials said.

He was subdued by Coast Guardpersonnel and arrested by Grand Hav-en Public Safety Officers, according to

a news release. Krueger is currently inOttawa County Jail.

Krueger’s driver’s license lists himas aWestmont resident, but he had beenliving at a building his parents ownedinMears, Mich., in Oceana County, saidofficials, who also said that the parents

are fromDowners Grove.The Westmont Police Department

confirmed that Krueger lives in the 3800block of North Park Street in unincorpo-rated DuPage County nearWestmont.

Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana CountySheriff’s Department said that the build-ing was completely destroyed in a fireearly Sunday morning prior to the inci-dent at the Coast Guard Station.

“After our investigation, our detec-tives obtained a four count felony war-rant,”Mast said.

Krueger was scheduled to be ar-raigned Feb. 11 and charged withfirst-degree arson, second-degree arson,arson preparation to burn property of$20,000 ormore and arson preparation toburn dwelling, according toMast.

“It was a unique place, it looked likea 1950s-style service station prior to thefire,”Mast said.

His motives and intent are unclear,officials said.

Bond was set at $75,000 for the CoastGuard incident, and the arson warranthas a bond of $100,000.

Standardized testing is changing dramatically in Illinois.Out are the old, familiar tests; they are replaced with the newPARCC tests – which stands for Partnership for Assessment ofReadiness for College and Careers. PARCC will measure howwell students meet the state’s new, more demanding standardsknown as Common CoreState Standards.

By state and federalmandate, District 99 mustissue the test to students thisspring.

Not everyone is excitedabout the PARCC tests. Forexample, administering the test poses a variety of challeng-es. The assessments will be computer-based, which createssome logistical hurdles for us – and a departure from thepencil-and-paper tests that students are accustomed to taking.Also, assessments will be given over nine days, for two hourseach day. That’s a lot of time, and we’re adjusting schedules totry to minimize the disruption and stress to students.

Despite the obstacles, we believe that the PARCC tests bet-ter reflects our curriculum than previous tests ever could. Forexample, for English questions, students must read multiplepassages carefully, pull out key ideas and evidence and thenwrite persuasive arguments. For math problems, studentsmust show their work and write their reasoning. Studentsmust synthesize information, which is a more complex taskthan anything we’ve asked students to do before on a standard-ized test. But it’s what teachers ask them to do all the time inclass, and so we know there is value in it.

We anticipate the results of the PARCC tests will help ourteachers to make better informed decisions about their instruc-tion. By analyzing where our students succeed (and where theyfall short), we will be able to adapt lesson plans, increase stu-dent understanding and create new measures of accountabilityfor ourselves.

District 99 has been at the forefront of adapting our curricu-lum to align with the more rigorous standards, and we’ve seenthe positive impact on student learning. Raising our expecta-tions of what students are capable of achieving isn’t easy, butwe know that it is good for students.

Salt Creek Ballet celebrates3 decades of dance

What started as a few ballet stu-dents pirouetting on a worn gymnasiumfloor in LaGrange, has blossomed intoa nationally acclaimed dance company,with hundreds of students perfectingtheir moves at a state-of-the art facilityin Westmont.

Salt Creek Ballet (SCB) celebrates its30th anniversary this year, and contin-ues it’s two-part mission: to train stu-dents, and to give dancers high-levelopportunities to perform. Founder Patri-cia Sigurdson had taught Chicago-areastudents following her training at theRoyal Ballet School in London, and inNew York with famed choreographersFrederick Franklin and Robert Joffrey.She also danced professionally with theAmerican Ballet Theater. However shewas compelled to bring her talents andclasses to the western suburbs.

Sigurdson began teaching students inLaGrange, and soon wanted to provide aprofessional-level performance experi-ence. She felt that the western suburbswould benefit from and support a qual-ity, classically trained dance company.

After generating support and funding,Sigurdson established SCB in 1985.

Teacher Susanne Carroll Wren, withSCB for more than 37 years (even beforeit was officially established), recalls theearly facility, which “consisted of onelarge studio, and one small one. We soonoutgrew that, and developed the fourstudios we have today.”

The staff grew also, adding employ-ees including Christina Salerno, whohad danced with the company, andnow serves as SCB’s executive director.When Sigurdson retired in 1998, Russiandancers Sergey Kozadayev and ZhannaDubrovskaya became artistic directors.This husband and wife team contributetheir classical and contemporary balletexpertise honed on the internationalstage.

Three decades of dancers have tak-en classes and performed at SCB, whichis known for its elaborate productions,including the annual holiday classic,“The Nutcracker.” SCB has embellished“The Nutcracker” performances, and thecompany now owns and recently updat-ed the set and costumes. Wren recallshow SCB previously rented sets andwardrobe, and even borrowed dancers,to perform in the early years.

SOUND OFF‘Uneggspected’ differenceOnce in awhile, I treatmyself to an Egg

How is it that Lisle charges$2.99, while Downers Grove charges $3.45for the same item? This is a 46 cents differ-ence. So, if you need an EggMcMuffin in themorning, I recommend you shop in Lisle.

Comcast complaintThis has to do with Downers Grove

Comcast. I pay over $80 a month forthe digital starter package and all theextra fees that they tag on with it. Andyet, there is no on-screen guide to theirprograms. Now, they used to have sucha guide on a certain channel where youcould see what’s on, but now they took itaway, and when you call them, they haveno explanation. This is ridiculous. Howare you supposed to know what’s on?Just one more bad thing about Comcast.

Downers Grove residentsshould feel safe on sidewalkWhy is a homeowner allowed to put up a

4-foot plastic fence just inches from a publicsidewalk and have the right, according tothe Downers Grove Police Department, tolet his pitbull andmastiff dog charge thefence as people arewalking by? Accordingto the police department, he has this rightto do this because the dogs are on his prop-erty.My question is, where do his rights endandmine begin? This is a public sidewalk,and people need to feel safewhen they’rewalking past. The owner should bemade toput up a secure, 6-foot fence, so that youdon’t feel your life is in imminent danger. ... Iwould really like to see an ordinance by theDowners Grove Township to not allow thisto be going on, especially when the fence isright on top of a public sidewalk.

Do better next timeRegarding the recent snow removal ef-

fort by the village of Downers Grove: Thepeople in charge, including the mayorand anyone up for re-election, would bewise to familiarize themselves with thestory of Chicago Mayor Michael Bilandicand the blizzard of 1979. Remember thatsomething as simple as a bad snowfallcould be your downfall as an electedofficial. Please do a better job next time.

No reason for village to complainThere is no reason to complain about

Downers Grove snow removal. Let’s re-member that the weather forecast priorto Thursday started out at 2 to 5 inches.... No one was predicting 19 inches until

late Sunday night. ... I live on a Level 2street, and the plows made my streetpassable at 5 a.m. Monday. I can remem-ber back in February 2000. It had snowedovernight, and my street hadn’t beentouched when I left for work at 8 a.m. Itstill hadn’t been touched when I tried todrive through my subdivision at 6 p.m.coming home from work. Snow removalhas improved greatly since then.

Downers Grove did best it couldTo the caller who said Downers Grove had

theworst snow effort ever and comparedDowners Grove toWestmont, ClarendonHills and Hinsdalemust not have actuallydriven in downtown Hinsdale. Hinsdale wasterrible, andWestmont, Clarendon Hills andHinsdale aremuch smaller than DownersGrove. I think Downers Grove did the bestjob they could, considering it was thefifth-largest snowstorm in history. I applaudthe snowplows of Downers Grove.

Martin Tully must be re-elected. As tothe incumbent commissioners who arerunning, the word is defenestrate.

BOLINGBROOK – DownersGrove North’s girls basketballteam notched a fourth-quartershutout during a dominantdefensive performance in theregional quarterfinals gameagainst Plainfield Central.

The Trojans held Plain-field Central to 11 points orless in every quarter, keepingthe opposing offense off thescoreboard for the final eightminutes of a 54-22 victory inthe first round of the Class 4Aplayoffs.

“We rely on our defense tomake other team’s uncomfort-able and set the tone for ouroffense,” said DGN guard Lau-ren Porcelli. “We got a couplestops early in the fourth quar-ter, and I think that gave us aboost on offense and helped usgo on a run.”

Ahead 34-22 going into thefinal frame, Trojans guardBrigid Miller nailed back-to-back 3-pointers from theright wing. On an ensuing of-fensive set, Porcelli then splitthe Plainfield Central defense,drawing a foul before sinkinga right-handed layup. She fin-ished off the three-point playand extended the lead to 43-22.

The Trojan’s fourth-quarterstarting lineup scored anothernine unanswered points be-fore head coach Stephan Boltunloaded the bench with aboutthree minutes left in the game.

“The Plainfield Centralzone defense was giving ussome trouble early, but wewere then able to work theball inside and kick it out tothe Millers, who hit some big3-pointers,” Bolt said.

Sophomore twins Brigidand Colleen Miller combinedfor five 3-pointers, while Pey-

ton Winters recorded her thirddouble-double in four gameswith 11 points, 11 reboundsand five blocks.

Although the Trojanswere again without leadingscorer Jaida Green, who willlikely miss the remainder ofthe season with a stress frac-ture in her left leg, DownersGrove North received con-tributions from up and downthe lineup Monday, enablingthe team to run away withthe victory.

“Anytime you are missing18 points per game from yourleading scorer, your offense isgoing to take a hit and it tookus a few games to adjust,” Boltsaid. “But it gives other kidsa chance to step up and makesome plays.

“We just have to share theball; our team mentality is tofind teammates shots. Makeit easy on the team and knowwhen to pass up OK shots forgreat shots. We need to takegreat shots every single timedown the floor.”

Porcelli led all scorers with15 points while Colleen Millerfinished with 12 points.

Downers Grove North ad-vanced to a regional semifinalmatchup against Bolingbrookon Tuesday. The winner willplay Oswego East or PlainfieldNorth on Thursday for the re-gional title.

HINSDALE – DownersGrove North gymnast ElliaLeger had to wait a long timeto perform her uneven barsroutine Feb. 11 at the HinsdaleCentral sectional.

But the patience paid offas Leger ended an even lon-ger wait – her school’s 10-yeardrought between state quali-fiers.

The senior was the last com-petitor on bars and she rockedher set for a 9.35 score, goodenough for fourth place andan automatic berth at the statemeet at Palatine High School.

Leger’s bars routine com-pleted her sectional meet andalso allowed her to advance tostate in the all-around compe-tition. Her 36.775 was good forfifth place.

“I’m just really excited thatall my hard work that I’ve

[put] in the past year has paidoff,” Leger said. “I was actual-ly really, really anxious beforeI was going [on bars] because

I knew what I had to get andwhat I had to do. I just reallywanted to go out there and dothe best routine that I could.”

Leger, who also qualifiedon balance beamwith a fourth-place score of 9.15, is the firstDowners North gymnast toqualify for state since KathyZeles and Maggie Bronnywent in 2005. Leger is North’sfirst all-around qualifier sinceKrista Lewis and Casey Pankoin 2003.

“I was hoping for bars andI wasn’t really expecting tomake beam and all-around,”Leger said. “I just couldn’t bemore excited and happy.”

Downers Grove South soph-omore Kayla Carlson was in asimilar mood after qualifyingfor the first time. She stuckher Yurchenko vault for a ca-reer-high 9.45, good enough forfifthand the final automaticbid.

“I’m really excited to go andnever thought I’d be able to doit,” Carlson said. “But I lis-tened to my coaches. They’vebeen telling me I could do it allyear.”

Carlson achieved tremen-dous height on the Yurchenko,the toughest vault being doneat the high school level, andknew right away she was go-ing to stick it.

“I’ve seen videos [of it] andstill can’t believe it,” said Carl-son, who earned an at-largestate berth in the all-around,where she finished eighthwith36.25, and beam. “I could feel itwhile I was doing it I knew itwas a good one and I was justhappy with that.”

Downers Grove North,which was making its firstsectional appearance since2005, finished fifth in the teamstandings with 138.075 points,while Downers Grove Southbrought up the rear of the six-team field with 136.95.

“I have a lot of young kidson the team,” Downers Northcoach Linda Reynolds said.“We’re really excited about thefuture.”

DOWNERS GROVE – Jor-don Kedrowski has takenhis game to another level inhis only season on DownersGrove North boys basketballteam.

The senior, who trans-ferred from Neuqua Valley toDGN at the start of the schoolyear, quickly established him-self as the Trojans’ most con-sistent scorer, and through19 games he leads the teamin points per game (12.4) and3-pointers (109).

Additionally, the 6-foot-2guard is the team’s primaryball handler and has maturedinto an offensive catalyst,leading area teams with a 5.7assist-per-game average.

“The transition has gonepretty smooth, and it’s helpedthat the coaches implementeda new offense this season, sothe rest of the team was learn-ing a new system as well,”Kedrowski said. “We came inand had a lot great practicesto start the season. I credit myteammates for that, they werea huge help.”

Kedrowski also attributeshis success to the DownersGrove North coaching staff,

especially head coach JimThomas, whose tough loveapproach has helped him ma-ture as a player and a person.

“He’s hard on me, he getson me a lot in practice,”Kedrowski said. “But I thinkit’s because he sees poten-tial in me; he knows I wantto play at the next level andhe just wants me at my beston every single play. He’s afantastic coach, I’ve learnedso much from him that goesbeyond basketball.”

Thomas ’ t u t e l a g e o fKedrowski goes back fartherthan this basketball season.The coach first took Kedrows-ki under his wing when theguard joined his MercuryElite AAU team this pastspring.

“We had some really niceplayers on that team, andKedrowski was the pointguard that set up the offenseand distributed the basket-ball,” Thomas said. “So he’sreally taken on a new rolewith this team [DownersGrove North]. He’s still agreat passer, but he’s shownthat he’s an effective scorer,too.”

Like Thomas, who playedguard for Augustana College,Kedrowski hopes to contin-

ue his basketball career afterhigh school. He is currentlytalking to coaches at the Divi-sion-I, DII and DIII level, butwill not make a decision if andwhere he will play college bas-ketball until after the season.

“I don’t want to make itabout me, it’s about the teamat this point,” Kedrowski said.“We are focused on getting asfar as we can in the playoffsthis year, then after I will fig-ure it out.”

The Trojans could not beatYork for a second time thisseason, falling to the Dukes63-49 on Thursday. Kedrows-ki led the way with 15 pointswhile Colin Kramper chippedin 11.

DGN goes on the road toface Oak Park River Forest at7:30 p.m. Friday before squar-ing off against Nazareth Acad-emy at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Soulier: What happened inthe fourth quarter that enabledthe team to engineer a 18-0 run?

Porcelli: I think that webrought a lot of energy andstarted to play really well asa unit. We have been talkingabout moving as a unit andeveryone moving together in-stead of everyone doing their

own thing. I thought at thebeginning of the quarter westarted moving and workingtogether.

Soulier: You held them toless than 10 points in all but onequarter. How important is it toset the tone on defense?

Porcelli: I think that’smore important than offensebecause you can’t win a gamewithout defensive stops. Theoffense will come as we workour butts off on defense.

Soulier: How has the offensechanged without Jaida Green inthe lineup?

Porcelli: For me, I am justdoing my best to breakdowndefenses by dribbling andgetting to the hoop. As a team,we have been doing a good jobof moving the ball and gettingscoring contributions fromthroughout the lineup.

The Downers Grove Southjunior won three consecu-tive backdraw matches atthe Downers Grove Northsectional tournament and fin-ished fourth at 138 pounds tolock up his first state tourna-ment berth.

“It feels good,” Johnsonsaid. “I haven’t been downstate in my three years, and Ifeel like when I get down thereI should accomplish my goaland place top five in the state.”

While this will be John-son’s first trip to state, he hasa good idea of what to expectwhen the tourney beginsThursday and how best to pre-pare for success.

“Morning practices, moreintense practices, keepingmy conditioning up and stayfocused,” Johnson said. “I’mexpecting really tough compe-tition.”

Downers Grove North’sPat Walker locked up hissecond straight state tourna-ment berth with a 2-0 win ina backdraw semifinal at 113pounds, then improved hisstate seeding with an 8-3 winin the third-place match.

“It feels pretty good,”Walker said of getting backto state. “I just know what’sgoing to happen [at state] andI know what to expect.”

North’s E.J. Phillips wonhis first three sectionalmatches to reach the finals at285, where he finished second

while earning his first trip tothe state tournament.

The Trojans also saw SkyArend, Nate Cummins andAustin Maher compete at thesectional but come up short ofstate berths. Ramy And, RyanGurski, Ahmir Hooks, MarkLeflore-Chapman and SergioVillalobos were in the sameboat for the Mustangs.

WestmontA pair of Sentinels wres-

tlers qualified for the statefinal after placing in the topfour of their respective class-es at Saturday’s Wilmingtonsectional.

Junior Anthony Griffithscame in second place in theheavyweight class, losing 7-2to the sectional champion.

Senior Adam Ferrell alsowill make a trip to state af-ter placing fourth in the160-pound class. Ferrell lost16-13 in the third-place match.
