DEXTER The villageof Dexter became the firstmunicipality to ratify thenew inter-local agreementbetween municipalitiesserved by the Dexter AreaFire Department thevillage along with Websterand Dexter Township
and the Scio TownshipFire Department.
What will be dubbed theWashtenaw ConsolidatedFire and RescueDepartment has been in
the works for the pastseveral years. It has beenworked on by the RegionalFire Committee, which iscomprised of local officialsfrom the village and town-ships and has been shapedby feedback from personnelwithin both of the two firedepartments.
The proposed regional-ization effort offers manysignificant benefits for thevillage and our residents, said Village PresidentShawn Keough. Includinga lower overall coststructure, better budget
control and predictability, operational and serviceefficiencies, and better longterm opportunity for thefirefighters.
The matter was a topic ofdiscussion only at the lastVillage Council meeting, asthe revised draft inter-localagreement had the finaltouches put on it, all theway down to how the newfire organizations namewill be handled on equip-ment and uniform patchesgoing forward.
Village CouncilmemberPaul Cousins made a
motion to skip discussingthe proposed agreementand jump straight toratifying it, with VillageCouncilmember JoeSemifero seconding themotion.
I fully support this 100percent, Cousins said.
Upcoming changesThe new department will
go through a number oftransitional changes fromtwo separate organizationsto a combined one, suchas the hiring of a new fire
chief for the WashtenawConsolidated Fire andRescue Department.
A new headquarters forthe regional fire depart-ment is still also to bedetermined, as per theagreement. All propertyof both individual depart-ments will not be ownedby the new legal entitythat is the WashtenawConsolidated Fire andRescue Department.

etsy Emrich has a calling.The Dexter-based art-
ist combines her interestwith birds and love for
recycling into mixedmedia works of collage art.
Using recycled magazines she prefers fashion magazineslike Vogue or food magazines
and other found objects to cre-
ate her collages, Emrich said herinterest in the animal stems fromher dad, who was an avid birdwatcher before he passed awayyears ago.
(Ravens) kind of signifythe connection to the spiritualworld, she said. The main rea-son (I use them) is because theyhave such personalities. Theyhave attitudes. Theyre sassy.Theyre not a pretty bird, theyrethe birds of prey.
Emrich will show some of her
3D mixed media pieces at the AnnArbor Street Art Fair July 17-20,including some from her bookraven series, in which she usesvintage books as frames for hercollages. Some of her larger-scale
works will also be on display.
Hitting the right noteThe single mother of two has
been entering her art into artshows across the country for twoyears and has been producingit off and on for about sevenyears. This year will be her firsttime at the Ann Arbor Street ArtFair.
Being a mixed media artistwasnt always what Emrich
expected to do, however.Emrich was trained as a clas-
sical flutist and received a bache-lors degree in flute performancefrom Peabody Conservatory inBaltimore, Md. She also com-
pleted graduated studies at theUniversity of Cincinnati-CollegeConservatory of Music.
Before having her kids, Emrichworked as a musician. She saidshe has always been fascinatedwith art growing up and althoughshe didnt study art in school, shetook workshops and classes whenshe could on the side. It was whenshe took time off from work tostay home with her children thatshe had more time to focus onpainting.
Though she began as a painter,Emrich said she stumbled uponcollage work after trying to makeher pieces more figurative.
