    Safety GuidelinesEquipment Safety

Safety of the operator is one of the mainconcerns in designing and developing anew piece of equipment. Designers andmanufacturers build in as many safetyfeatures as possible. However, every yearmany accidents occur which could havebeen avoided by a few seconds of thoughtand a more careful approach to handlingequipment. Many accidents can beavoided by observing the precautions inthis section. To avoid personal injury, study the precautions listed in this manualand follow them.

    • Do not attempt to operate this equipment under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

    • Review the safety instructions with all users annually.

    • This equipment is dangerous to children and persons unfamiliar with its operation. The operator should be a responsible adult familiar with farm machinery and trained in this equipment’s operation.

    • Do not allow persons to operate or assemble this unit until they have read this manual and have developed a thorough understanding of the safety precautions and of how it works.

If you have any questions not answered inthis manual or require additional copies, please contact your dealer or DewEzeManufacturing.

    General Flatbed Safety

SAFETY WARNING!Do not stand under the hugger armswhen operating the bale pickup unit, even when arms are empty.

    • Replace any CAUTION, WARNING, DANGER or instructional decal that is not readable or is missing.

    • Make sure all safety pins are in place and flatbed mounting bolts are secure to the truck frame.

    • Make sure hinges, joints, and sliding parts are well greased, especially during off season to prevent rusting and binding.

    • Check with truck dealer for any load limits, additional suspension or tire requirements. The flatbed’s carrying capability may exceed the truck’s GVRW, especially on a ¾ ton truck.

    Hydraulic Safety

SAFETY WARNING!Hydraulic system operates under highpressure and escaping fluid canpenetrate the skin.

    • Do not operate hydraulic system with hood open.

    • Do not activate electric clutch unless truck engine is at idle. Switching the clutch on at road speeds can seriously damage your hydraulic system.

    Safety Guidelines

    6

  • RT TRANSPORTR

    R

    Beginning Operation

    • Place 6” or 12” cradles on hugger arms where desired and secure with 4” pins.

    • Slide shaft into reel and secure with one of the L-shaped pins.

    • Turn pump switch on the dash to the “ON” position. (Red light will indicate the pump is on).

IMPORTANT: In cold weather, allow theengine to idle for 5-10 minutes with thepump on before operating the arms. This will allow the oil to warm up andflow more freely. Neglecting to do thismay cause hydraulic pump failure.

    Loading

    • Back the truck towards the reel with the arms spread apart.

    • Position the cradles over the shaft and lower until they are fully seated.

    • Secure the shaft in the cradles with the L-shaped pins.

    • Lift the reel onto the truck.

SAFETY WARNING!When hauling a reel, make sure it isresting on the flatbed and is tightlysecured. Carrying a reel behind thebed, places excessive stress on the liftcylinder, linkage, pins and shaft.Dislocation of a reel could result inserious injury or death to passengersof vehicles following behind.

    Unloading

    • To unload, do the reverse of the loading operation.

    Unrolling

    • Position the truck on as level terrain as possible and parallel to the direction the cable will be pulled, then set the parking brake.

    • Pick the reel up a few inches off the flatbed so it will turn freely.

    • The pump may be turned off during the unrolling operation.

    • Take precautions necessary to ensure that the reel unrolls smoothly.

    • Begin unrolling.

    Storing the Arms

    • Close the arms partially and lay them on the flatbed.

    • Open arms until they are flush with the side of the bed. They now function with the dummy arms as the bed’s side rails.

    Turn System Off

    • Turn the pump off when it is not in use.

CAUTION: Operating the truck at roadspeeds, or above 2,000 RPM, with thepump engaged, may cause hydraulicpump failure.

    Operating Instructions

    7

  • RT TRANSPORTR

    R

Safety GuidelinesMaintenanceCheck Daily or Before Use

    • Check hydraulic oil level. Keep level between “add” and “full” on dipstick.

    • Check belt tension and idler pulleys on engine clutch pump system.

    • Examine hydraulic hoses for cracks or leaks.

SAFETY WARNING!Do not check for hydraulic leaks withyour hands while the system isoperating. Use a piece of wood orcardboard. Hydraulic fluid escapingunder pressure can penetrate the skinand may cause death if not treatedimmediately.

    Grease

    • Grease the locations indicated in the illustration below once per week.

    Hydraulic Pressure

    • Hydraulic system pressure should be 2450 psi.

    • To check pressure, hook a test gauge to the quick-couplers.

    Hydraulic Oil

    • Change hydraulic oil when it is milky in appearance, or annually.

    • Change hydraulic oil filter after the first 40 hours of use and then every 250 hours, or annually thereafter. In Cold Weather (below 10° F)

    • Fill with hydraulic oil specifically rated for cold weather.

    • Do not attach other hydraulic equipment to the bed. The oil will intermix and the cold weather viscosity will be lost.

    Other Maintenance Notes

    • If the quick-couplers leak, the o-rings inside may need to be replaced.

    • High heat, 190° or greater, can be damaging to the hydraulic system. Feel various parts of the system to make sure there are no “hot spots” which may indicate a problem.

    • For easy hookup of the couplers, shut switch “off” and activate control valve switches with the ignition “on”. This will release the pressure in the lines.

    • In the off season, run the bed at least twice a month to prevent valve condensation.
