Dewey DecimalsThink of a Dewey number as if it were dollars and cents! For example:595.23 comes before 595.30398.20 comes before 398.21796.33 comes before 796.332When in doubt, add a 0 (zero) to even out the digits afterthe decimal.
Nonfiction Call Numbersthree numbers to the left of the decimal 609.75
no limit on numbers to the right 644.805652
The more numbers you add to the right of the decimal, the more specific the subject is. Example: 644.805652 is the Dewey number for the commercial processing of kidney beans

** Today the DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification system) is published in 4 volumes. The first volume consists of the manual and tables. These tables contain numbers that are appended to numbers found in the schedules. When building a Dewey number we never start with Volume 1. Volumes 2 & 3 are the actual schedules. Here is where you'll find your base numbers. Volume 4 contains the Relative Index, which we'll see in a few minutes.
