Sulphur Hexafluoride Used in Circuit BreakersSulphur hexafluoride is used as an insulating gas in circuit breakers. Excess moisture in SF6 gas causes arcing, which can trip the circuit breaker and cut off power to the distribution network.
Moisture in Natural GasThe presence of moisture in high-pressure natural gas from a producing well causes pipelines and associated valves to freeze. High moisture content also leads to the formation of hydrates of the liquid hydrocarbons present, thus causing further difficulties. The moisture content of the gas also adversely affects the BTU value of the gas, thus lowering the quality and value of the product.
Vacuum-Evacuation and Gas Refill in Oil Filled TransformersMoisture is continuously monitored in the vacuum evacuation and gas refill of oil-filled transformers. The moisture content of blanketing gases, of oil-filled transformers, directly affects the dielectric properties of the oil through water vapour dissolution.
Instrument AirThe presence of moisture in air used as a blanketing gas for sensitive instruments can cause corrosion problems, rapid changes in calibration, and loss of instrument sensitivity.
Breathing AirThe presence of excess moisture in breathing air can lead to freezing in the pressure regulator and ice blocking the orifice, causing an interruption to the supply of air to the user.
Hydrogen Annealing OvensHigh moisture content in hydrogen gas used in annealing furnaces causes oxidation of the metal to occur, thus resulting in an undesirable surface finish on the product.
Ethylene Gas Stream for High-Density Polyethylene ProductionHigh moisture content in the Ethylene feed gas reduces the catalyst activity, thereby decreasing the overall yield of the polyethylene reactors.
Hydrogen Cooled Electric GeneratorsHydrogen is used to cool large stationary generators because of its high heat capacity and low viscosity. The hydrogen must be kept dry in order to maintain both its heat capacity and viscosity properties. Ambient moisture is considered a contaminant which will reduce the heat capacity and increase the viscosity of the cooling hydrogen.
Injection MouldingThe presence of excess moisture in the air used to dry plastic pellets has several adverse effects on the plastic products which are produced.
1. Excess moisture decreases the strength of the product.2. Excess moisture causes a poor finish on the surface of the product.3. Excess moisture causes clear plastic products to have a cloudy appearance.
All of these production defects reduce product yield and escalate production costs.
Nuclear ReactorsThe Advance Gas Cooled Reactor uses carbon dioxide gas to transfer heat from the nuclear fission core to the water boiler for steam generation. The moisture content needs to be kept low to avoid corrosion damage, and the moisture monitoring will also act as a leak detector.
Packaging FoodsFor some foil-wrapped foods such as butter, it is possible to extend the storage life if the small amount of air trapped within the foil is replaced with nitrogen with a very low moisture content.

The Alpha Moisture Systems GCTU-B has been specifically
developed to collect all SF6 sampled for analysis. The Model
GCTU-B is also designed to recycle the entire SF6 sample to the high
or medium voltage switch(GIS)/transformer giving a zero effect to
the installation and protecting the environment by eliminating any
discharge to the atmosphere.
The common usage of SF6 in high and medium voltage switchgear
and transformers has brought significant advantages in
performance and reliability but, because SF6 is a “greenhouse
gas”, special precautions must be adopted when routine

The GCTU-CMH-PTY-SO2 has been specifically devel-
oped to sample and analyse dewpoint, SF6 Purity (%)
and SO2 (ppmv). The unit collects the SF6 sample
from MV/HV Circuit Breakers, Switchgear and
Transformers in the internal collec-on vessel of the
instrument. A�er sampling and logging, the sample
can simply be pumped back into the installa-on
under test.
The GCTU-CMH-PTY-SO2 is designed to recycle and
pump-back the en-re SF6 sample, giving a zero effect
to the installa-on and protec-ng the environment
by elimina-ng any discharge to atmosphere.
The user has only to connect, regulate flow, take
sample, log, then pump back, typically in under 5
minutes (includes purging -me).

To allow rapid spot checks it is essential that the measuringsensor is kept drier than the sample to be measured. Thedesiccant dry-down chamber is designed to do just this bykeeping the sensor surrounded by desiccant when theinstrument is not in use, only exposing it to the sample gaswhen taking measurements. At no stage is the sensor allowedto come into contact with ambient air.

Model DS1200 from Alpha Moisture Systems is a single channel
on-line hygrometer designed to measure dewpoint in process
gases and dry compressed air. The panel mounted ⅛ DIN
dewpoint meter, providing panel protection to IP65 (NEMA4X),
combines with the Model AMT range of ultra high capacitance
sensors for accurate trace moisture measurement.
Combination of advanced digital technology of the display electronics and the transmitter, makes this the
system of choice for a wide range of applications where precise indication, control and monitoring is critical.
Model DS1200-AMT system can be factory configured to read in °C dewpoint, °F dewpoint, ppm(v), ppb(v),
g/m³ or lbs/MMSCF. The measured value is displayed on a large 4 digit, 13.8mm high, fourteen segment
LED display. Model DS1200-AMT Dewpoint Hygrometer is fully configured to the customer's specifications.
The instrument offers two fully programmable alarm relays, which can be independently set across the
full operating range. An optically isolated analogue signal, linear with the measured unit is also available
(to interface with any external device).
Model DS1200-AMT can be supplied with any one of a range of dewpoint transmitters, which have all
been specially manufactured to provide long term stability, so ensuring a long and trouble free service life.
The long lasting sensing element offers excellent sensitivity, repeatability and response speed - especially
on dry down. Integrated electronics in each transmitter allow calibration data to be stored within its
memory, making transmitters completely field interchangeable.
Each transmitter is calibrated to provide overall system accuracy of better than ±2°C dewpoint and
supplied with a certificate traceable to international humidity standards.
Model DS1200-AMT also incorporates the invaluable “AUTOCAL” feature for easy field verification of the
system response, without recourse to any additional equipment. Accidental or unauthorised operation is
prevented by a simple initiation routine.
The system allows the display unit to be sited in excess of 1000m from the transmitter, connected by a
simple twisted pair cable.

Model AMT-Ex Dewpoint Hygrometer is a three wire 4-20mA transmitter, used for continuous measurement of humidity
in a process gas or compressed air, which will output a linear 4-20mA signal corresponding to the dewpoint temperature. The Model AMT-Ex transmitter can also be factory configured to output a 4-20mA linear signal for any other moisture unit e.g. ppm(v), ppm(w), g/m
3, lb/MMSCF etc.
The long lasting sensing element offers excellent sensitivity, repeatability and response speed. Each unit is supplied with a Certificate of Calibration, traceable to International Humidity Standards, validating accuracy to ±2ºC dewpoint. Model AMT-Ex is ATEX certified and provides an Intrinsically Safe Dewpoint Transmitter for hazardous area use when installed with the appropriate isolator. The transmitter also incorporates an Automatic Calibration (AUTOCAL) feature, which allows the user to carry out a field calibration / span check. AUTOCAL feature is operated by means of two small button switches built within the transmitter enclosure. To avoid tamper, the switches are locked in normal use and can only be activated by following a special routine. The integral RISC microprocessor circuitry of the Model AMT-Ex transmitter allows high resolution with advanced self-diagnostics for fault conditions. It also enables periodic re-calibration of the moisture sensor, storing calibration data within the fully self-contained unit. The mechanics of the Model AMT-Ex transmitter have been designed to cope with extreme environmental conditions. The rugged stainless steel construction offers protection to IP66 (NEMA4X), with transmitter electrical connections made via secure industrial connector. Model AMT-Ex transmitter can withstand 35,000 kPa (350bar) maximum pressure and by employing a low resistance cable, the transmitter can be located significant distances, in excess of 1000 metres, from the safe area. Designed with the operator in mind, for reliable and accurate measurements, Model AMT-Ex is extremely easy to install and operate, requiring little or no maintenance. The Model AMT-Ex transmitter is supplied with a Certificate of Calibration, an instruction manual and 2m connecting cable.

Model PDT Dewpoint Transmi*er is a two wire 4-20mA transmi*er for
con)nuous measurement of moisture in a process gas or compressed air that
gives a linear 4-20mA signal corresponding to the dewpoint.
It is ideally suited for monitoring the moisture content of compressed air from
refrigerant driers. See other applica)ons below.
The Model PDT transmi*er can also be factory configured to give a
4-20mA linear signal for %RH.
The long las)ng Polymer sensing element offers excellent sensi)vity, repeatability and response
speed. Each unit is supplied with a Cer)ficate of Calibra)on, traceable to Interna)onal Humidity
Standards, valida)ng accuracy be*er than ±20C dewpoint.
The Model PDT transmi*er has been designed to cope with extreme environmental condi)ons.
The rugged stainless steel construc)on offers protec)on to IP65 (NEMA4), with transmi*er electrical
connec)ons made via secure industrial connector.

Model SSILow Pressure Sample System - Maximum inlet pressure up to 28 barg, withsensor opertaing at atmospheric pressure.
This system is designed for gas or general compressed air sampling formaximum inlet pressure of 28 barg, with the moisture sensor operating atatmospheric pressure. The system provides for all necessary pressureand flow control and includes sample filtration to protect againstparticulate contamination. Auxiliary inlet connection is provided for asecond sample stream or for injection of a calibration gas. An outletconnection is also included to allow sample recovery or disposal.
